Abstract

We propose to achieve a strong bistable response of a thin layer of a saturable absorption medium by involving a planar metamaterial specially designed to bear a high- Q trapped-mode resonance in the infrared region.

Optical bistability involving planar metamaterials with broken structural symmetry

Vladimir R. Tuz, S. L. Prosvirnin, Liudmyla A. Kochetova

We report on a bistable light transmission through a planar metamaterial composed of a metal pattern of weakly asymmetric elements placed on a nonlinear substrate. Such structure bears the Fano-type sharp resonance response of a trapped-mode excitation. The feedback required for bistability is provided by the coupling between the strong antiphased trapped-mode-resonance currents excited on the metal elements and the intensity of inner field in the nonlinear substrate.

From electromagnetically induced transparency to absorption in planar optical metamaterials

Bo Na, Jinhui Shi, Chunying Guan +1 more

We theoretically investigate the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a planar metamaterial at optical frequency, which originates from destructive and constructive interference between dark and radiative elements. The metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators with different geometries. An EIT-like transparent window with low absorption is observed and found to be strongly affected by resonant states of the resonators. The transition between the EIT and EIA is achieved by changing the split width and coupling distance. The absorption is enhanced up to 2.5 times compared with the dipolar case. The excitation of the dark mode is very important for EIT-and EIA-like responses of the proposed metamaterial. The EIT and EIA phenomena offer a potential method for manipulating electromagnetic response in metamaterial-based devices.

Absorption Saturation is Tailorable in the Strong Light-Matter Coupling Regime

R. Colombelli, Mathieu Jeannin

It is well known that optical absorption saturation of intersubband transitions in doped semiconductor quantum wells is independent of the introduced doping in the absence of a cavity. When inserting the system in a resonator, we show that this remains valid only in the weak light-matter coupling regime. In the strong light-matter coupling regime instead, we demonstrate that absorption saturation is no more doping independent and it is instead tailorable. Based on this unified formalism for saturation in weak and strong coupling, we provide designs for semiconductor saturable absorption (SESAM) mirrors and bistable systems operating in the mid-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum and with extremely low saturation intensities. Countering intuition, we show that the most suitable region to exploit low saturation intensities is not the ultra-strong coupling regime, but is instead at the onset of strong light-matter coupling.
