Exact Results for Anomalous Transport in One-Dimensional Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract

Anomalous transport in one-dimensional translation invariant hamiltonian systems with short range interactions is shown to belong in general to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. Exact asymptotic forms for density-density and current-current time correlation functions and their Fourier transforms are given in terms of the Prähofer-Spohn scaling functions, obtained from their exact solution for the polynuclear growth model. The exponents of corrections to scaling are found as well, but not so the coefficients. Mode coupling theories developed previously are found to be adequate for weakly nonlinear chains but in need of corrections for strongly anharmonic interparticle potentials. A simple condition is given under which Kardar-Parisi-Zhang behavior does not apply, sound attenuation is only logarithmically superdiffusive, and heat conduction is more strongly superdiffusive than under Kardar-Parisi-Zhang behavior.

Robustness of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang-like transport in long-range interacting quantum spin chains

Sajant Anand, Jack Kemp, Julia Wei +3 more

Isotropic integrable spin chains such as the Heisenberg model feature superdiffusive spin transport belonging to an as-yet-unidentified dynamical universality class closely related to that of Kardar, Parisi, and Zhang (KPZ). To determine whether these results extend to more generic one-dimensional models, particularly those realizable in quantum simulators, we investigate spin and energy transport in non-integrable, long-range Heisenberg models using state-of-the-art tensor network methods. Despite the lack of integrability and the asymptotic expectation of diffusion, for power-law models (with exponent $2 < α< \infty$) we observe long-lived $z=3/2$ superdiffusive spin transport and two-point correlators consistent with KPZ scaling functions, up to times $t \sim 10^3/J$. We conjecture that this KPZ-like transport is due to the proximity of such power-law-interacting models to the integrable family of Inozemtsev models, which we show to also exhibit KPZ-like spin transport across all interaction ranges. Finally, we consider anisotropic spin models naturally realized in Rydberg atom arrays and ultracold polar molecules, demonstrating that a wide range of long-lived, non-diffusive transport can be observed in experimental settings.

Anomalous ballistic scaling in the tensionless or inviscid Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

Enrique Rodríguez-Fernández, Silvia N. Santalla, Mario Castro +1 more

The one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is becoming an overarching paradigm for the scaling of nonequilibrium, spatially extended, classical and quantum systems with strong correlations. Recent analytical solutions have uncovered a rich structure regarding its scaling exponents and fluctuation statistics. However, the zero surface tension or zero viscosity case eludes such analytical solutions and has remained ill-understood. Using numerical simulations, we elucidate a well-defined universality class for this case that differs from that of the viscous case, featuring intrinsically anomalous kinetic roughening (despite previous expectations for systems with local interactions and time-dependent noise) and ballistic dynamics. The latter may be relevant to recent quantum spin chain experiments which measure KPZ and ballistic relaxation under different conditions. We identify the ensuing set of scaling exponents in previous discrete interface growth models related with isotropic percolation, and show it to describe the fluctuations of additional continuum systems related with the noisy Korteweg-de Vries equation. Along this process, we additionally elucidate the universality class of the related inviscid stochastic Burgers equation.

Superdiffusion from Nonabelian Symmetries in Nearly Integrable Systems

Sarang Gopalakrishnan, Romain Vasseur

The Heisenberg spin chain is a canonical integrable model. As such, it features stable ballistically propagating quasiparticles, but spin transport is subballistic at any nonzero temperature: An initially localized spin fluctuation spreads in time t to a width t2/3. This exponent as well as the functional form of the dynamical spin correlation function suggest that spin transport is in the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) universality class. However, the full counting statistics of magnetization is manifestly incompatible with KPZ scaling. A simple two-mode hydrodynamic description, derivable from microscopic principles, captures both the KPZ scaling of the correlation function and the coarse features of the full counting statistics, but remains to be numerically validated. These results generalize to any integrable spin chain invariant under a continuous nonabelian symmetry and are surprisingly robust against moderately strong integrability-breaking perturbations that respect the nonabelian symmetry.

Anomalous Hydrodynamics in a One-Dimensional Electronic Fluid

Ivan V. Protopopov, Rickmoy Samanta, A. D. Mirlin +1 more

We construct multimode viscous hydrodynamics for one-dimensional spinless electrons. Depending on the scale, the fluid has six (shortest lengths), four (intermediate, exponentially broad regime), or three (asymptotically long scales) hydrodynamic modes. Interaction between hydrodynamic modes leads to anomalous scaling of physical observables and waves propagating in the fluid. In the four-mode regime, all modes are ballistic and acquire Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ)-like broadening with asymmetric power-law tails. "Heads" and "tails" of the waves contribute equally to thermal conductivity, leading to ω^{-1/3} scaling of its real part. In the three-mode regime, the system is in the universality class of a classical viscous fluid [O. Narayan and S. Ramaswamy, Anomalous Heat Conduction in One-Dimensional Momentum-Conserving Systems, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 200601 (2002).PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.89.200601, H. Self-interaction of the sound modes results in a KPZ-like shape, while the interaction with the heat mode results in asymmetric tails. The heat mode is governed by Levy flight distribution, whose power-law tails give rise to ω^{-1/3} scaling of heat conductivity.

Anomalous Spin Diffusion in One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Jacopo De Nardis, Marko Medenjak, Christoph Karrasch +1 more

The problem of characterizing low-temperature spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic spin chains has so far remained elusive. Here we reinvestigate it by focusing on isotropic antiferromagnetic chains whose low-energy effective field theory is governed by the quantum nonlinear sigma model. Employing an exact nonperturbative theoretical approach, we analyze the low-temperature behavior in the vicinity of nonmagnetized states and obtain exact expressions for the spin diffusion constant and the NMR relaxation rate, which we compare with previous theoretical results in the literature. Surprisingly, in SU(2)-invariant spin chains in the vicinity of half filling we find a crossover from the semiclassical regime to a strongly interacting quantum regime characterized by zero spin Drude weight and diverging spin conductivity, indicating superdiffusive spin dynamics. The dynamical exponent of spin fluctuations is argued to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. Furthermore, by employing numerical time-dependent density matrix renormalization group simulations, we find robust evidence that the anomalous spin transport persists also at high temperatures, irrespective of the spectral gap and integrability of the model.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling for an integrable lattice Landau-Lifshitz spin chain

Avijit Das, Manas Kulkarni, Herbert E. Spohn +1 more

Recent studies report on anomalous spin transport for the integrable Heisenberg spin chain at its isotropic point. Anomalous scaling is also observed in the time evolution of nonequilibrium initial conditions, the decay of current-current correlations, and nonequilibrium steady state averages. These studies indicate a space-time scaling with x∼t^{2/3} behavior at the isotropic point, in sharp contrast to the ballistic form x∼t generically expected for integrable systems. In our contribution we study the scaling behavior for the integrable lattice Landau-Lifshitz spin chain. We report on equilibrium spatiotemporal correlations and dynamics with step initial conditions. Remarkably, for the case with zero mean magnetization, we find strong evidence that the scaling function is identical to the one obtained from the stationary stochastic Burgers equation, alias Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. In addition, we present results for the easy-plane and easy-axis regimes for which, respectively, ballistic and diffusive spin transport is observed, whereas the energy remains ballistic over the entire parameter regime.
