Abstract

We show that the generators of quantum states of light can be built by employing the Kerr nonlinearity, a strong linear absorption or losses, and the linear coupling of optical modes. Our setup can be realized, for instance, with the use of the optical fiber technology. We consider in detail the simplest cases of three and four coupled modes, where a strongly lossy mode is linearly coupled to other linear and nonlinear modes. In the three-mode design, our scheme emulates the third-order nonlinear absorption, allowing for generation of the single-photon states, or two-photon absorption allowing the generation of the phase states. In the four-mode design, the scheme emulates a nonlocal absorption which produces an entangled state of two uncoupled modes. We also note that in the latter case and in the case of phase state generation the output state is in the linear mode, which prevents its subsequent degradation by strong losses accompanying a strong Kerr nonlinearity.

Generation of four-photon polarization entangled states with cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Meiyu Wang, Fengli Yan

We show how to prepare three different types of four-photon polarization entangled states among four modes. The scheme only use cross-Kerr medium, polarization beam splitters and X homodyne measurements on coherent light fields, which can be efficiently implemented in quantum optical laboratories. GHZ states and symmetric Dick states can be generated in deterministic way based on the scheme. With the possible availability of suitable strong Kerr nonlinearity, another type of entangled state called genuine four-photon entangled state can be realized as well.

Generation of nonclassical light by nonlinear cavities

Teppo Häyrynen, Jani Oksanen, Toufik Sadi +1 more

It has recently been shown that multiphoton absorption in cavities containing an emitter and a nonlinear mirror or a two photon absorber can be used to create antibunched photons (i.e. nonclassical light). We investigate the generation of nonclassical photon states using nonlinear laser cavities where the excitation has been modified so that it consists of short current pulses. The light fields in the studied setups are ideally formed of superpositions of zero photon and one photon states. Our goal is to study and develop single photon sources which are needed e.g. in quantum information processing and quantum computing, and fundamental quantum optical experiments. We investigate the effect of exciting the photon emitter with time dependent current pulses to provide single-photon-on-demand sources. We maximize the probability of the single photon state by optimizing the strengths of linear losses, nonlinear absorption, photon emission, and the length of the current injection pulse into the amplifier. Furthermore, we analyze the output photon statistics and waiting times using Monte Carlo simulations. This type of a setup is technologically attractive since it potentially provides room temperature realization of photon antibunching with essentially standard optoelectronic materials and processing techniques.

Generating entanglement of photon-number states with coherent light via cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Zhi‐Ming Zhang, Jian Hua Yang, Ya‐Fei Yu

We propose a scheme for generating entangled states of light fields. This scheme only requires the cross-Kerr nonlinear interaction between coherent light beams, followed by a homodyne detection. Therefore, this scheme is within the reach of current technology. We study in detail the generation of the entangled states between two modes, and that among three modes. In addition to the Bell states between two modes and the W states among three modes, we find plentiful new kinds of entangled states. Finally, the scheme can be extended to generate the entangled states among more than three modes.

Scheme for generation of three-photon entangled W state assisted by cross-Kerr nonlinearity and quantum dot

Jino Heo, Changho Hong, Seong Gon Choi +1 more

We represent an optical scheme using cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs) and quantum dot (QD) within a single-sided optical cavity (QD-cavity system) to generate three-photon entangled W state containing entanglement against loss of one photon of them. To generate W state (three-photon) with robust entanglement against loss of one photon, we utilize effects of optical nonlinearities in XKNLs (as quantum controlled operations) and QD-cavity system (as a parity operation) with linearly optical devices. In our scheme, the nonlinear (XKNL) gate consists of weak XKNLs, quantum bus beams, and photon-number-resolving measurement to realize controlled-unitary gate between two photons while another nonlinear (QD) gate employs interactions of photons and an electron of QD confined within a single-sided optical cavity for implementation of parity gate. Subsequently, for the efficiency and experimental feasibility of our scheme generating W state, we analyze the immunity of the controlled-unitary gate using XKNLs against decoherence effect and reliable performance of parity gate using QD-cavity system.

Xiang Yan, Ya‐Fei Yu, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

We propose a scheme for generating a hyperentangled four-photon cluster state that is simultaneously entangled in polarization modes and spatial modes. This scheme is based on linear optical elements, weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, and homodyne detection. Therefore, it is feasible with current experimental technology.
