Abstract

We present a scheme to generate frequency-multiplexed entangled (FME) single photons based on the entanglement between two species in an atomic-mixture ensemble. The atomic ensemble driven by the write and read fields according to a certain timing sequence, the generation of FME single photons can be repeated until success is achieved. The source might have significant applications in wavelength-division-multiplexing quantum key distribution.

Generation of Frequency-Tunable Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs

Takayoshi Kobayashi

Photon pairs with correlated frequencies from an optical parametric system were generated by a continuous wave pump focused on a type-II nonlinear crystal with polarization entanglement. The polarization entanglement of the frequency-resolved photons was measured under several typical configurations. By optimizing the condition, the degree of polarization entanglement was improved substantially. We proposed the application of the system, which can be used as a light source of wavelength division multiplexing quantum key distribution, optimizing the configuration of the photon-pair generation.

Robust quantum repeater with atomic ensembles and single-photon sources

Fang-Yu Hong, Shi‐Jie Xiong

We present an efficient scheme for generating high-fidelity entanglement locally which is essential for quantum repeater protocols. Two local ``polarization'' entangled states of atomic ensembles $u$ and $d$ are generated by absorbing a single photon emitted by on-demand single-photon sources, based on which high-fidelity local entanglement between four ensembles can be established efficiently through Bell-state measurement. Entanglement in basic links and entanglement connection between links are carried out by the use of two-photon interference. In addition to being robust against phase fluctuations in the quantum channels, this scheme may speed up quantum communication with higher fidelity compared with the partial read protocol [Sangouard et al., Phys. Rev. A 77, 062301 (2008)] which may generate entanglement most quickly among the previous schemes with the same ingredients.

Almost indistinguishable single photons via multiplexing cascaded biphotons with cavity modulation and phase compensation

Yu-En Wong, T. H. Chang, H. H. Jen

The cascade-emitted biphotons generated from alkali metal atomic ensembles are an excellent entanglement resource which enables long-distance quantum communication. The communication of quantum information between distant locations can be realized by utilizing the low-loss telecom bandwidth in the upper transition of the cascaded photons in a fiber-based quantum network. Meanwhile, the infrared photon from the lower transition of this highly directional and frequency-correlated biphoton can be created using the four-wave mixing process and can be stored locally as a collective spin wave. Here, we theoretically investigate the frequency entanglement of this biphoton and propose two approaches to remove the two photons' mutual correlations in frequency spaces. The first approach applies an optical cavity which modulates the biphoton spectrum into a more symmetric and narrow spectral function by multiplexing multiple atomic ensembles with phase compensation. The purity of the single photons reaches up to 0.999, and the entanglement entropy $S$ of the biphoton is reduced to 0.006, which is 200 times smaller than the one without multiplexing. The other approach employs a symmetric pumping of the laser fields in two atomic ensembles, which leads to a moderate reduction of $S\ensuremath{\sim}0.3$ when nondiscrimination detection devices are used for both photons. An extremely low frequency entanglement implies an almost indistinguishable single-photon source, which offers a potential resource for photonic quantum emulation and computation.

A versatile source of polarization entangled photons for quantum network applications

Florian Kaiser, Amandine Issautier, Lutfi Arif Ngah +3 more

We report a versatile and practical approach for generating high-quality polarization entanglement in a fully guided-wave fashion. Our setup relies on a high-brilliance type-0 waveguide generator producing paired photon at a telecom wavelength associated with an advanced energy-time to polarisation transcriber. The latter is capable of creating any pure polarization entangled state, and allows manipulating single photon bandwidths that can be chosen at will over five orders of magnitude, ranging from tens of MHz to several THz. We achieve excellent entanglement fidelities for particular spectral bandwidths, i.e. 25 MHz, 540 MHz and 100 GHz, proving the relevance of our approach. Our scheme stands as an ideal candidate for a wide range of network applications, ranging from dense division multiplexing quantum key distribution to heralded optical quantum memories and repeaters.

Multiplexed spin-wave–photon entanglement source using temporal multimode memories and feedforward-controlled readout

Yafei Wen, Pai Zhou, Zhongxiao Xu +6 more

A source that can generate atom-photon quantum correlations or entanglement based on a quantum memory is a basic building block of quantum repeaters (QRs). To achieve high entanglement generation rates in ensemble-based QRs, spatial-, temporal-, and spectral-multimode memories are needed. Previous temporal-multimode memories are based on rephasing mechanisms in inhomogeneously broadened media. Here, by applying a train of write pulses in time, with each pulse coming from a different direction, to a homogeneously broadened atomic ensemble to induce Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller-like Raman processes, we prepare up to 19 pairs of modes, namely, one spin-wave mode and one photonic time bin. Spin-wave-photon (i.e., atom-photon) entanglement is probabilistically produced in these mode pairs. Based on the stored spin-wave modes together with feedforward-controlled readout, we build a temporally multiplexed source and then demonstrate an 18.8-fold increase in the probability of the generation of spin-wave-photon entanglement compared to the sources that use individual modes. The measured Bell parameter for the multiplexed source is $2.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02$, and the memory lifetime is 30 \ensuremath{\mu}s.
