Abstract

We will present measurements and theoretical calculations of a surprisingly fast chemical reaction observed between ultracold 174Yb+ ions and 40Ca atoms held in a hybrid MOTION trap, which was constructed to produce ultracold molecular ions.

Investigation of Ultracold Chemical Reactions in a Hybrid System of Laser-Cooled Atoms and Ions

Takashi Mukaiyama, 了一 齋藤

The atom-ion hybrid system provides a new platform to study ultracold collisions and chemical reactions. To investigate chemical reactions in ultracold regimes, we combine neutral atoms in an optical trap and ions in a Paul trap to construct an atom-ion hybrid system. Here we introduce our recent work on ultracold elastic/inelastic collisions at a single atom level with a state-by-state manner. From quantitative discussions on the collision’s cross-sections, we clarified the microscopic collisional mechanisms.

Ultracold Chemical Reaction in a Laser-cooled Atom-ion Mixture

Ryoichi Saito, Shinsuke Haze, Takashi Mukaiyama

The atom-ion hybrid system provides us with new platform to study ultracold collisions and chemical reactions, which play important role in quantum simulations, quantum information processing utilizing atom-ion interactions. To investigate chemical reactions in an ultracold regime, we start with neutral atoms trapped in an optical dipole trap and ions in a linear Paul trap, and combine them together to construct a hybrid system. Here we introduce our recent work on ultracold elastic/inelastic collisions at a single atom level with a state-by-state manner in our atom-ion hybrid system. From the quantitative discussion on the collision cross sections, the microscopic collisional mechanisms have been clarified.

Comment on "Measurement of a large Chemical Reaction Rate between Ultracold Closed-Shell ^{40}Ca Atoms and Open-Shell ^{174}Yb^{+} Ions Held in a Hybrid Atom-Ion Trap"

Bernard Zygelman, Hunt, Robert

We estimate the radiative quenching rate of the $^{40}$Ca - $^{174}$Yb$^{+}$ molecular ion and find that it under-estimates the value reported in recent experiments by about 5 orders of magnitude. We comment on possible explanations for this large discrepancy.

This article presents the microscopic physics governing interactions and dynamical processes between cold atoms and ions, and it reviews how these system can be prepared and combined in experiments. Also discussed are how ultracold ion-atom hybrid systems can be applied to study controlled chemical reactions, to form and explore the spectroscopy of cold molecular ions, and to implement quantum simulations of many-body phenomena.

Ion-Atom and Ion-Molecule Hybrid Systems: Ion-Neutral Chemistry at Ultralow Energies

Pascal Eberle, Alexander Dörfler, Claudio von Planta +5 more

The study of chemical reactions between ions and neutral species at very low energies reveals precise informations about the dynamics of collisions and fine details of intermolecular interactions. Here, we report progress towards the development of next- generation experiments for the investigation of cold ion-neutral reactions. First, we present a new ''dynamic" hybrid ion-atom trap which enables the study of collisions with a superior energy resolution accessing a regime in which quantum scattering resonances may become observable. Second, we discuss and numerically characterize the concept and properties of a hybrid trap for cold neutral molecules and molecular ions which paves the way for the study of ion-molecule reactions in the millikelvin regime.
