Abstract

Motivated by the recent experiment on $p$-orbital-band bosons in optical lattices, we study theoretically the quantum phases of Mott insulator and superfluidity in two dimensions. The system features a superfluid phase with transversely staggered orbital current at weak interaction and a Mott insulator phase with antiferro-orbital order at strong coupling and commensurate filling. We go beyond mean-field theory and derive from a microscopic model an effective action that is capable of describing both the $p$-band Mott insulating and superfluid phases in strong coupling. We further calculate the excitation spectra near the quantum critical point and find two gapless modes away from the tip of the Mott lobe but four gapless modes at the tip. Our effective theory reveals how the phase coherence peak builds up in the Mott regime when approaching the critical point. We also discuss the finite-temperature phase transition of $p$-band superfluidity.

Superfluid-Mott-Insulator Phase Transition and Collective Fluctuations in both Phases of Bosons in an Optical Lattice

Zhu Rui

The Bose Hubbard model describing interacting bosons in an optical lattice is reduced to a simple spin-1 XY model with single-ion anisotropy in the vicinity of the Mott phase. In the strong coupling Mott insulating regime, we propose a mean field theory based on a constraint SU (3) pseudo-boson representation on the effective model and discuss the excitation spectra and the phase transition to the superfluid state. Further to the superfluid phase, we use the coherent-state approach to derive the collective excitation modes. It is found that the Mott phase has two degenerate gapped quadratic excitation spectra which graduate into two degenerate gapless linear ones at the transition point, and one gapless linear mode with one gapped quadratic mode in the superfluid phase.

Mott-insulator–to–superfluid transition in the Bose-Hubbard model: A strong-coupling approach

K. Sengupta, N. Dupuis

We present a strong-coupling expansion of the Bose-Hubbard model which describes both the superfluid and the Mott phases of ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. By performing two successive Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations of the intersite hopping term, we derive an effective action which provides a suitable starting point to study the strong-coupling limit of the Bose-Hubbard model. This action can be analyzed by taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the mean-field approximation as in the Bogoliubov theory of the weakly interacting Bose gas. In the Mott phase, we reproduce results of previous mean-field theories and also calculate the momentum distribution function. In the superfluid phase, we find a gapless spectrum and compare our results with the Bogoliubov theory.

Exotic phases of interacting p -band bosons

F. Hébert, Zi Cai, V. G. Rousseau +3 more

We study a model of interacting bosons that occupy the first excited $p$-band states of a two-dimensional optical lattice. In contrast to the much studied single band Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, this more complex model allows for nontrivial superfluid phases associated with condensation at nonzero momentum and staggered order of the orbital angular momentum in addition to the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. More specifically, we observe staggered orbital angular momentum order in the Mott phase at commensurate filling and superfluidity at all densities. We also observe a transition between the staggered angular momentum superfluid phase and a striped superfluid, with an alternation of the phase of the superfluid along one direction. The transition between these two phases was observed in a recent experiment, which is then qualitatively well described by our model.

Superfluid-insulator transition of two-species bosons with spin-orbit coupling

Saptarshi Mandal, Kush Saha, K. Sengupta

Motivated by recent experiments [Y. J. Lin et al., Nature (London) 471, 83 (2011)], we study Mott phases and superfluid-insulator (SI) transitions of two-species ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude $t$ and in the presence of a spin-orbit coupling characterized by a tunable strength $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Using both strong-coupling expansion and Gutzwiller mean-field theory, we chart out the phase diagrams of the bosons in the presence of such spin-orbit interaction. We compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the Mott phase near the SI transition point and show that it displays precursor peaks whose position in the Brillouin zone can be varied by tuning $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Our analysis of the critical theory of the transition unravels the presence of unconventional quantum critical points at $t/\ensuremath{\gamma}=0$, which are accompanied by emergence of an additional gapless mode in the critical region. We also study the superfluid phases of the bosons near the SI transition using a Gutzwiller mean-field theory that reveals the existence of a twisted superfluid phase with an anisotropic twist angle which depends on $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. Finally, we compute the collective modes of the bosons and point out the presence of reentrant SI transitions as a function of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ for nonzero $t$. We propose experiments to test our theory.

Gaussian quantum fluctuations in the superfluid–Mott-insulator phase transition

Marco Faccioli, Luca Salasnich

Recent advances in cooling techniques make possible the experimental study of quantum phase transitions, which are transitions near absolute zero temperature accessed by varying a control parameter. A paradigmatic example is the superfluid-Mott transition of interacting bosons on a periodic lattice. From the relativistic Ginzburg-Landau action of this superfluid-Mott transition we derive the elementary excitations of the bosonic system, which contain in the superfluid phase a gapped Higgs mode and a gapless Goldstone mode. We show that this energy spectrum is in good agreement with the available experimental data and we use it to extract, with the help of dimensional regularization, meaningful analytical formulas for the beyond-mean-field equation of state in two and three spatial dimensions. We find that, while the mean-field equation of state always gives a second-order quantum phase transition, the inclusion of Gaussian quantum fluctuations can induce a first-order quantum phase transition. This prediction is a strong benchmark for future experiments on quantum phase transitions.

Orbital order in a bosonic p -band triangular lattice

Hua Chen, Xiaoming Xie

We present a detailed study of the Bose-Hubbard model in a $p$-band triangular lattice by focusing on the evolution of orbital order across the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. Two distinct phases are found in the superfluid regime. One of these phases adiabatically connects the weak interacting limit. This phase is characterized by the intertwining of axial ${p}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}={p}_{x}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}i{p}_{y}$ and in-plane ${p}_{\ensuremath{\theta}}=cos\ensuremath{\theta}{p}_{x}+sin\ensuremath{\theta}{p}_{y}$ orbital orders, which break the time-reversal symmetry and lattice symmetries simultaneously. In addition, the calculated Bogoliubov excitation spectrum gaps the original Dirac points in the single-particle spectrum but exhibits emergent Dirac points. The other superfluid phase in close proximity to the Mott insulator with unit boson filling shows a detwined in-plane ferro-orbital order. Finally, an orbital exchange model is constructed for the Mott insulator phase. Its classical ground state has an emergent $\mathrm{S}\mathrm{O}(2)$ rotational symmetry in the in-plane orbital space and therefore enjoys an infinite degeneracy, which is ultimately lifted by the orbital fluctuation via the order by disorder mechanism. Our systematic analysis suggests that the in-plane ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulator phase agrees with and likely evolves from the latter superfluid phase.
