Abstract

We present a new method to identify the Boundary Conformal Field Theories (BCFTs) describing the critical points of the Ising model on the strip. It consists in measuring the low-lying excitation energies spectra of its quantum spin chain for different boundary conditions and then to compare them with those of the different boundary conformal field theories of the ( A 2 , A 3 ) minimal model.

Excitation spectrum at the Yang-Lee edge singularity of the 2D Ising model with boundaries

Tomasz Wydro, J F McCabe, Smain Balaska

The presence of the boundaries imposes severe constraints on the possible Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). Special physical boundary conditions are compatible with CFT and define Boundary Conformal Field Theories (BCFTs). This presentation contains a study of the Yang-Lee edge singularity (YLS) of the two dimensional (2D) Ising model on the infinite strip. At the 2D Ising model's YLS, several potential BCFTs are identified. Based on numerical calculations on an Ising quantum chain at YLS, the measurements are used to identify one of potential BCFTs.

EXCITATION SPECTRUM AT THE YANG–LEE EDGE SINGULARITY OF 2D ISING MODEL ON THE STRIP

Smain Balaska, JOHN F. MCCABE, Tomasz Wydro

At the Yang–Lee edge singularity, finite-size scaling behavior is used to measure the low-lying excitation spectrum of the Ising quantum spin chain for free boundary conditions. The measured spectrum is used to identify the conformal field theory that describes the Yang–Lee edge singularity of the 2D Ising model for free boundary conditions.

Boundary conditions for the entanglement cut in two-dimensional conformal field theories

Ananda Roy, Sergei L. Lukyanov, Hubert Saleur

The entanglement spectra for a subsystem in a spin chain fine-tuned to a quantum-critical point contains signatures of the underlying quantum field theory that governs its low-energy properties. For an open chain with given boundary conditions described by a 2D conformal field theory~(CFT), the entanglement spectrum of the left/right half of the system coincides with a boundary CFT spectrum, where one of the boundary conditions arise due to the `entanglement cut'. The latter has been argued to be conformal and has been numerically found to be the `free' boundary condition for Ising, Potts and free boson theories. For these models, the `free' boundary condition for the lattice degree of freedom has a counterpart in the continuum theory. However, this is not true in general. Here, this question is analyzed for the unitary minimal models of 2D CFTs using the density matrix renormalization group technique. The entanglement spectra are computed for blocks of spins in open chains of A-type restricted solid-on-solid models with identical boundary conditions at the ends. The imposed boundary conditions are realized exactly for these lattice models due to their integrable nature. The obtained entanglement spectra are in good agreement with certain boundary CFT spectra. The boundary condition for the entanglement cut is found to be conformal and to coincide with the one with the highest boundary entropy. This identification enables determination of the exponents governing the unusual corrections to the entanglement entropy from the CFT partition functions. These are compared with numerical results.

Boundary conformal spectrum and surface critical behavior of classical spin systems: A tensor network renormalization study

Shumpei Iino, Satoshi Morita, Naoki Kawashima

We numerically obtain the conformal spectrum of several classical spin models on a two-dimensional lattice with open boundaries for every boundary fixed point obtained by the Cardy's derivation [J. L. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 324, 581 (1989)]. In order to extract accurate conformal data, we implement the tensor network renormalization algorithm [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180405 (2015)] extended so as to be applicable to a square lattice with open boundaries. We successfully compute the boundary conformal spectrum consistent with the underlying boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) for the Ising, tricritical Ising, and three-state Potts models on the lattice, which allows us to confirm the validity of the BCFT analyses for the surface critical behaviors of those lattice models.

Excitation Spectrum at the Yang-Lee Edge Singularity of the 2D Ising model

Tomasz Wydro, McCabe, John F.

This paper studies the Yang-Lee edge singularity of 2-dimensional 2D Ising model through a quantum spin chain. In particular, finite-size scaling measurements on the quantum spin chain are used to determine the low-lying excitation spectrum and central charge at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The measured values are consistent with predictions for the (A4, A1) minimal conformal field theory.

Experimental observation of conformal field theory spectra

Xiangkai Sun, Yuan Le, Stephen Naus +6 more

Conformal field theories (CFTs) feature prominently in high-energy physics, statistical mechanics, and condensed matter. For example, CFTs govern emergent universal properties of systems tuned to quantum phase transitions, including their entanglement, correlations, and low-energy excitation spectra. Much of the rich structure predicted by CFTs nevertheless remains unobserved in experiment. Here we directly observe the energy excitation spectra of emergent CFTs at quantum phase transitions -- recovering universal energy ratios characteristic of the underlying field theories. Specifically, we develop and implement a modulation technique to resolve a Rydberg chain's finite-size spectra, variably tuned to quantum phase transitions described by either Ising or tricritical Ising CFTs. We also employ local control to distinguish parities of excitations under reflection and, in the tricritical Ising chain, to induce transitions between distinct CFT spectra associated with changing boundary conditions. By utilizing a variant of the modulation technique, we furthermore study the dynamical structure factor of the critical system, which is closely related to the correlation of an underlying Ising conformal field. Our work not only probes the emergence of CFT features in a quantum simulator, but also provides a technique for diagnosing a priori unknown universality classes in future experiments.
