Abstract

We investigate a system of fermions on a two-dimensional optical square lattice in the strongly repulsive coupling regime. In this case, the interactions can be controlled by laser intensity as well as by Feshbach resonance. We compare the energetics of states with resonating valence bond $d$-wave superfluidity, antiferromagnetic long-range order, and a homogeneous state with coexistence of superfluidity and antiferromagnetism. Using a variational formalism, we show that the energy density of a hole ${e}_{\mathrm{hole}}(x)$ has a minimum at doping $x={x}_{c}$ that signals phase separation between the antiferromagnetic and $d$-wave paired superfluid phases. The energy of the phase-separated ground state is, however, found to be very close to that of a homogeneous state with coexisting antiferromagnetic and superfluid orders. We explore the dependence of the energy on the interaction strength and on the three-site hopping terms and compare with the nearest-neighbor hopping t-J model.

Intertwined orders of ultracold fermions loaded in two-dimensional optical lattices

Alexandre Leprévost, Olivier Juillet, Raymond Frésard

The generic quantum phase diagram of repulsively interacting spin-1/2 ultracold atoms, moving in a two-dimensional optical lattice, is investigated by means of unbiased energy minimizations with symmetry-adapted unrestricted wavefunctions. In the strongly correlated regime, we highlight the intertwining of spin-, charge-, and pair-density waves embedded in a uniform d-wave superfluid background. As the lattice filling increases, this phase emerges from homogenous states exhibiting spiral magnetism and evolves towards a doped antiferromagnet. A concomitant enhancement of long-ranged d-wave pairing correlations is also found. Nevertheless, superfluidity is suppressed when the charge period and the inverse of the hole doping from half-filling are commensurate. Numerical tests of the approach are carried out, too.

Fermionic superfluidity and spontaneous superflows in optical lattices

Shi-Jie Yang, Shiping Feng

We studied the superfluidity of strongly repulsive fermionic atoms in optical lattices. Atoms are paired through a correlated tunneling mechanism, which induces superfluidity when repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions are included in the Hubbard model. This paired superfluid is a metastable state, which persists for a long time as the pair-broken process is severely suppressed. The mean-field phase diagram and low-energy excitations are investigated in a square lattice system. Intriguingly, spontaneous superflows may appear in the ground state of a triangular optical lattice system due to antiferromagnetic frustration.

Superfluidity of fermions with repulsive on-site interaction in an anisotropic optical lattice near a Feshbach resonance

B. Wang, L-M Duan

We present a numerical study on ground state properties of a one-dimensional (1D) general Hubbard model (GHM) with particle-assisted tunnelling rates and repulsive on-site interaction (positive-U), which describes fermionic atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice near a wide Feshbach resonance. For our calculation, we utilize the time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm, which is an extension of the density matrix renormalization group and provides a well-controlled method for 1D systems. We show that the positive-U GHM, when hole-doped from half-filling, exhibits a phase with coexistence of quasi-long-range superfluid and charge-density-wave orders. This feature is different from the property of the conventional Hubbard model with positive-U, indicating the particle-assisted tunnelling mechanism in GHM brings in qualitatively new physics.

Intertwined orders from symmetry projected wavefunctions of repulsively interacting Fermi gases in optical lattices

Alexandre Leprévost, Olivier Juillet, Raymond Frésard

Unconventional strongly correlated phases of the repulsive Fermi–Hubbard model, which could be emulated by ultracold vapors loaded in optical lattices, are investigated by means of energy minimizations with quantum number projection before variation and without any assumed order parameter. Using a tube-like geometry of optical plaquettes to realize the four-leg ladder Hubbard Hamiltonian, we highlight the intertwining of spin-, charge-, and pair-density waves embedded in a uniform d -wave superfluid background. As the lattice filling increases, this phase emerges from homogenous states exhibiting spiral magnetism and evolves towards a doped antiferromagnet. A concomitant enhancement of long-ranged d -wave pairing correlations is also found. Numerical tests of the approach for two-dimensional clusters are carried out, too.

Magnetic and superfluid phases of confined fermions in two-dimensional optical lattices

Brian M. Andersen, Georg M. Bruun

We examine antiferromagnetic and $d$-wave superfluid phases of cold fermionic atoms with repulsive interactions in a two-dimensional optical lattice combined with a harmonic trapping potential. For experimentally realistic parameters, the trapping potential leads to the coexistence of magnetic and superfluid ordered phases with the normal phase. We study the intriguing shell structures arising from the competition between the magnetic and superfluid order as a function of the filling fraction. In certain cases, antiferromagnetism induces superfluidity by charge redistributions. We furthermore demonstrate how these shell structures can be detected as distinct antibunching dips and pairing peaks in the density-density correlation function probed in expansion experiments.

Phase diagram of imbalanced strongly interacting fermions on a one-dimensional optical lattice

Alberto Anfossi, Luca Barbiero, Arianna Montorsi

We show that the Hubbard Hamiltonian with particle-assisted tunneling rates---recently proposed to model a fermionic mixture near a broad Feshbach resonance---displays a ground-state phase diagram with superfluid, insulating, and phase-separated regimes. In the latter case, when the populations are balanced the two phases coexist in microscopic antiferromagnetic domains. Macroscopic phase segregation into a high-density superfluid of molecules and a low-density Fermi liquid of single atoms appears in the density profile above a critical polarization ${p}_{c}$.
