Entanglement entropy for non-coplanar regions in quantum field theory

Abstract

We study the entanglement entropy in a relativistic quantum field theory for regions which are not included in a single spatial hyperplane. This geometric configuration cannot be treated with the Euclidean time method and the replica trick. Instead, we use a real time method to calculate the entropy for a massive free Dirac field in two dimensions in some approximations. We find some specifically relativistic features of the entropy. First, there is a large enhancement of entanglement due to boosts. As a result, the mutual information between relatively boosted regions does not vanish in the limit of zero volume and large relative boost. We also find extensivity of the information in a deeply Lorentzian regime with large violations of the triangle inequalities for the distances. This last effect is relevant to an interpretation of the amount of entropy enclosed in the Hawking radiation emitted by a black hole.

Remarks on the entanglement entropy for disconnected regions

Horacio Casini, Marina Huerta

Few facts are known about the entanglement entropy for disconnected regions in quantum field theory. We study here the property of extensivity of the mutual information, which holds for free massless fermions in two dimensions. We uncover the structure of the entropy function in the extensive case, and find an interesting connection with the renormalization group irreversibility. The solution is a function on space-time regions which complies with all the known requirements a relativistic entropy function has to satisfy. We show that the holographic ansatz of Ryu and Takayanagi, the free scalar and Dirac fields in dimensions greater than two, and the massive free fields in two dimensions all fail to be exactly extensive, disproving recent conjectures. 1

On the renormalization of entanglement entropy

Jin-Yi Pang, Jiunn-Wei Chen

Abstract The renormalization of entanglement entropy of quantum field theories is investigated in the simplest setting with a λϕ4 scalar field theory. The 3+1 dimensional spacetime is separated into two regions by an infinitely flat 2-dimensional interface. The entanglement entropy of the system across the interface has an elegant geometrical interpretation using the replica trick, which requires putting the field theory on a curved spacetime background. We demonstrate that the theory, and hence the entanglement entropy, is renormalizable at order λ once all the relevant operators up to dimension 4 are included in the action. This exercise has a one-to-one correspondence to entanglement entropy interpretation of the black hole entropy which suggests that our treatment is sensible. Our study suggests that entanglement entropy is renormalizable and is a physical quantity.

Entanglement entropy in quantum field theory and entanglement entropic force between black holes

First, we study the entanglement entropy S AB of a d + 1 dimensional massless free scalar field on two disjoint compact spatial regions A and B whose sizes are R 1 and R 2 , respectively, and the distance between them is r.The state of the massless free scalar field is the vacuum state. We consider the mutual information S A;B ≡ S A + S B -S AB where S A and S B are the entanglement entropy on the inside region of A and B, respectively. We develop the computational method based on that of Bombelli et al and obtain the result thatWhen A and B are spheres in d = 2 and 3, we obtain explicit resultsBy using the method used in the Minkowski spacetime case with some modifications, we study the entanglement entropy, S C , of the massless free scalar field on the outside region C of two black holes A and B whose radii are R 1 and R 2 and how it depends on the distance, r( R 1 , R 2 ) , between two black holes. If we can consider the entanglement entropy as thermodynamic entropy, we can see the entropic force (we call this entanglement entropic force) acting on the two black holes from the r dependence of S C .We consider the property of the entropic force.

Entanglement Entropy in Quantum Gravity

William Donnelly

We study a proposed statistical explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole in which entropy arises quantum-mechanically as a result of entanglement. Arguments for the identification of black hole entropy with entanglement entropy are reviewed in the framework of quantum field theory, emphasizing the role of renormalization and the need for a physical short-distance cutoff. \n \nOur main novel contribution is a calculation of entanglement entropy in loop quantum gravity. The kinematical Hilbert space and spin network states are introduced, and the entanglement entropy of these states is calculated using methods from quantum information theory. The entanglement entropy is compared with the density of states previously computed for isolated horizons in loop quantum gravity, and the two are found to agree up to a topological term. \n \nWe investigate a conjecture due to Sorkin that the entanglement entropy must be a monotonically increasing function of time under the assumption of causality. For a system described by a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, the conjecture is found to be trivial, and for a system described by an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space a counterexample is provided. \n \nFor quantum states with Euclidean symmetry, the area scaling of the entanglement entropy is shown to be equivalent to the strong additivity condition on the entropy. The strong additivity condition is naturally interpreted in information-theoretic terms as a continuous analog of the Markov property for a classical random variable. We explicitly construct states of a quantum field theory on the one-dimensional real line in which the area law is exactly satisfied.

Holographic entanglement entropy on generic time slices

Yuya Kusuki, Tadashi Takayanagi, Koji Umemoto

We study the holographic entanglement entropy and mutual information for Lorentz boosted subsystems. In holographic CFTs at zero and finite temperature, we find that the mutual information gets divergent in a universal way when the end points of two subsystems are light-like separated. In Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries dual to non-relativistic theories, we show that the holographic entanglement entropy is not well-defined for Lorentz boosted subsystems in general. This strongly suggests that in non-relativistic theories, we cannot make a real space factorization of the Hilbert space on a generic time slice except the constant time slice, as opposed to relativistic field theories.
