Abstract

In the present work we aim to characterize the lattice configurations and the magnetic behavior in the incommensurate phase of spin-Peierls systems. This phase emerges when the magnetic exchange interaction is coupled to the distortions of an underlying triangular lattice and has its experimental realization in the quasi-one-dimensional compound family TiO$X$ ($X=\text{Cl}$, Br). With a simple model of spin-$1/2$ chains inserted in a planar triangular geometry which couples them elastically, we are able to obtain the uniform-incommensurate and incommensurate-dimerized phase transitions seen in these compounds. Moreover, we follow the evolution of the wave vector of the distortions with temperature inside the incommensurate phase. Finally, we predict gapless spin excitations for the intermediate phase of TiO$X$ compounds along with incommensurate spin-spin correlations, offering to experimentalists a candidate to observe an exotic Luttinger liquidlike behavior.

Spin- 12 Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice: From magnetism to a one-dimensional spin liquid

Dariush Heidarian, Sandro Sorella, Federico Becca

We investigate the anisotropic triangular lattice that interpolates from decoupled one-dimensional chains to the isotropic triangular lattice and has been suggested to be relevant for various quasi-two-dimensional materials such as ${\text{Cs}}_{2}{\text{CuCl}}_{4}$ or $\ensuremath{\kappa}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{(ET)}_{2}{\text{Cu}}_{2}{(\text{CN})}_{3}$. We obtain an excellent accuracy by means of a representation for the resonating valence-bond wave function with both singlet and triplet pairings. This approach allows us to establish that the magnetic order is rapidly destroyed away from the pure triangular lattice and incommensurate spin correlations are short range. A nonmagnetic spin liquid naturally emerges in a wide range of the phase diagram with strong one-dimensional character.

Stability of algebraic spin liquids coupled to quantum phonons

Francesco Ferrari, Josef Willsher, Urban F. P. Seifert +2 more

Algebraic spin liquids are quantum disordered phases of insulating magnets that exhibit fractionalized gapless excitations and power-law correlations. Quantum spin liquids in this category include the experimentally established one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger liquid, as well as the U(1) Dirac spin liquid (DSL) that has been a focus of recent candidate materials searches. Most notably, several exchange-frustrated Heisenberg materials on the triangular lattice have shown evidence of the U(1) DSL. In this work, we measure the algebraic correlations of spin-singlet excitations in the J 1 − J 2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, prompting a detailed investigation of this model’s stability under spin-lattice coupling with dynamical phonons using variational Monte Carlo. As seen before in 1D spin chains, we observe a low-temperature transition from a U(1) DSL to valence bond order and predict the parameter regime where the model realizes a stable DSL ground state. To achieve this, we employ a series of finite-size scaling Ansätze inspired by the low-energy DSL’s conformal description in terms of quantum electrodynamics and show that emergent monopole operators drive the instability. We compare the physics of this transition to the 1D Luttinger liquid throughout our analysis. We derive the regime of stability against spin-Peierls ordering and argue that the DSL ground state might still be achievable in candidate materials, despite its tendency to valence bond solid ordering.

Quantum phase transitions, frustration, and the Fermi surface in the Kondo lattice model

Eitan Eidelstein, S. Moukouri, Avraham Schiller

The quantum phase transition from a spin-Peierls phase with a small Fermi surface to a paramagnetic Luttinger-liquid phase with a large Fermi surface is studied in the framework of a one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model that consists of an electron gas away from half filling, coupled to a spin-1/2 chain by Kondo interactions. The Kondo spins are further coupled to each other with isotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions which are tuned to the Majumdar-Ghosh point. Focusing on three-eighths filling and using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method, we show that the zero-temperature transition between the phases with small and large Fermi momenta appears continuous, and involves a new intermediate phase where the Fermi surface is not well defined. The intermediate phase is spin gapped and has Kondo-spin correlations that show incommensurate modulations. Our results appear incompatible with the local picture for the quantum phase transition in heavy fermion compounds, which predicts an abrupt change in the size of the Fermi momentum.

Quantum Spin-Liquid Behavior in the Spin-1/2 Random Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Triangular Lattice

Ken Watanabe, Hikaru Kawamura, Hiroki Nakano +1 more

Experimental quest for the hypothetical "quantum spin liquid" state has recently met a few promising candidate materials including organic salts κ-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3 and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, S=1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets consisting of molecular dimers. These compounds exhibit no magnetic ordering nor the spin freezing down to very low temperature, while various physical quantities exhibit gapless behaviors. Recent dielectric measurements revealed the glassy dielectric response suggesting the random freezing of the electric polarization degrees of freedom. Inspired by this observation, we propose as a minimal model of the observed quantum spin-liquid behavior the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg on the triangular lattice with a quenched randomness in the exchange interaction. We study both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the model by an exact diagonalization method, to find that when the randomness exceeds a critical value the model exhibits a quantum spin-liquid ground state. This randomness-induced quantum spin-liquid state exhibits gapless behaviors including the temperature-linear specific heat. The results provide a consistent explanation of the recent experimental observations on organic salts.

Ladder Studies of Gapless Quantum Spin Liquids: Spin Bose-metal and SU(2)-invariant Majorana Spin Liquids

Hsin-Hua Lai

The recent experimental realizations of spin-1/2 gapless quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional triangular lattice organic compounds EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2 and κ-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3 have stimulated the investigation of the gapless spin liquid theories. The models in dimensions greater than one (D>1) usually involve multispin interactions, such as ring exchange interactions, that are difficult to study, while effective gauge theory descriptions are not well-controlled to give reliable physics information. Driven by the need for a systematic and controlled analysis of such phase, such models on ladders are seriously studied. This thesis first focuses on such ladder models. We propose that the gapless spin liquid phase can be accessed from a two-band interacting electron model by metal-Mott insulator phase transition. We use Bosonization analysis and weak-coupling Renormalization Group to further study the gapless spin liquid state in the presence of Zeeman magnetic fields or orbital magnetic fields. Several new exotic gapless spin liquids with dominant spin nematic correlations are predicted. In such a ladder spin liquid, we also consider the impurity effects. We conclude that the local energy textures and oscillating spin susceptibilities around the impurities are nontrivial and can be observed in the experiments. We then shift our focus to another theoretical candidate, an SU(2)-invariant spin liquid with Majorana excitations, which can also qualitatively explain the experimental phenomenology. We construct an exactly solvable Kitaev-type model realizing the long-wavelength Majorana spin liquid state and study its properties. We find that the state has equal power-law spin and spin-nematic correlations and behaves nontrivially in the presence of Zeeman magnetic fields. Finally, we realize such Majorana spin liquid states on a two-leg ladder and further explore their stability. We conclude the states can be stable against short-range interactions and gauge field fluctuations.

Quantum spin liquid ground states of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice

Pavel Kos, Matthias Punk

We study quantum disordered ground states of the two-dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$, we find three different symmetric ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin liquid phase corresponds to the well-known zero-flux state in the Heisenberg limit, which is stable with respect to small Kitaev couplings and develops ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ order in the semiclassical limit at large $S$. In the opposite Kitaev limit, we find a different spin liquid ground state, which is a quantum disordered version of a magnetically ordered state with antiferromagnetic chains, in accordance with results in the classical limit. Finally, at intermediate couplings, we find a spin liquid state with unusual spin correlations. Upon spinon condensation, this state develops Bragg peaks at incommensurate momenta in close analogy to the magnetically ordered Z2 vortex crystal phase, which has been analyzed in recent theoretical works.
