Photoionization electron spectra in a system interacting with a neighboring atom

Abstract

Photoelectron ionization spectra of a system interacting with a neighbor two-level atom are investigated using the Laplace-transform method. These spectra are typically composed of several peaks. Photoelectron ionization spectra conditioned by the measurement on the two-level atom show oscillations at the Rabi frequency. The presence of spectral zeros occurring periodically with the Rabi period is predicted. This phenomenon is analyzed in detail.

Fano zeros in photoelectron spectra of an autoionization system interacting with a neighboring atom

Jan Peřina, A. Lukš, Vlasta Peřinová +1 more

Photoelectron ionization spectra of an autoionization system interacting with a neighboring two-level atom are studied using the method of canonical transformation. Conditions for the occurrence of a Fano zero are exactly derived, together with its frequency. Ionization spectra are typically composed of at most four peaks in this case. Sharp peaks occur not far from the Fano zero due to the confluence of bound-free coherences. Spectral peaks close to the Fano zero are suppressed. Also dynamical zeros appearing once per the Rabi period in conditioned photoelectron ionization spectra are observed.

Photoelectron spectra in an autoionization system interacting with a neighboring atom

Jan Peřina, A. Lukš, W. Leoński +1 more

Photoelectron ionization spectra of an autoionization system with one discrete level interacting with a neighbor two-level atom are discussed. The formula for long-time ionization spectra is derived. According to this formula, the spectra can be composed of up to eight peaks. Moreover, the Fano-like zeros for weak optical pumping are identified in these spectra. The conditional ionization spectra depending on the state of the neighbor atom exhibit oscillations at the Rabi frequency. Dynamical spectral zeros occurring once per the Rabi period are revealed in these spectra.

Photoelectron Signatures of Nonperturbative Dynamics in Resonant Two-Photon Ionization of Helium

Edvin Olofsson, Jan Marcus Dahlström

When an atom is driven by a laser field with a photon energy that is nearly resonant with an atomic transition, it can undergo periodic population transfers between the ground and excited state, known as Rabi oscillations [1], [2]. The aim of this work is to study photoionization from atoms for parameters accessible to a free-electron laser (FEL) [3]. Using time dependent perturbation theory to model photoionization from a Rabi oscillating atom, we have shown that in addition to the expected pathway of ionization from the excited state, non-resonant two-photon ionization will have a comparable amplitude at intensities on the order of 1013W/cm2[3].

Photoelectron spectra for an atom with one autoionizing level that interacts with a neighbor

A. Lukš, Vlasta Peřinová, Jan Peřina +2 more

We investigate two atoms coupled with a quantized field mode. Whereas one is the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) two-level atom, the other is an autoionizing system with two discrete levels and a continuum of states. In case interactions between the atoms do not occur, the periodic behavior of the JC atom contrasts with the autoionizing system. We ask whether or not a seesaw-like interaction between the atoms can change the behavior of the JC atom. We present photoelectron spectra dependent on the time for various initial states of the field mode.

Resonantly enhanced photoionization in correlated three-atomic systems

Bennaceur Najjari, C Müller, A B Voitkiv

Modifications of photoionization arising from resonant electron–electron correlations between neighbouring atoms in an atomic sample are studied. The sample contains atomic species A and B , with the ionization potential of A being smaller than the energy of a dipole-allowed transition in B . The atoms are subject to an external radiation field which is near resonant with the dipole transition in B . Photoionization of an atom A may thus proceed via a two-step mechanism: photoexcitation in the subsystem of species B , followed by interatomic Coulombic decay. As a basic atomic configuration, we investigate resonant photoionization in a three-atomic system A – B – B consisting of an atom A and two neighbouring atoms B . It is found that, under suitable conditions, the presence of neighbouring atoms can strongly affect the photoionization process, including its total probability, time development and photoelectron spectra. In particular, comparing our results with those for photoionization of an isolated atom A and a two-atomic system A – B , respectively, we reveal the characteristic impact made by the third atom.

Photoionization by pulses with a modulated frequency

Piotr Bała, Jacek Matulewski, Andrzej Raczyński +1 more

The dynamics of the bound-state populations and the photoelectron spectra are calculated for model atomic systems irradiated by a pulse with a harmonically modulated frequency. For a system including a single bound state a model is adopted, which takes into account the threshold behavior typical of negative ions and admits continuum-continuum transitions. For a model one-dimensional atom the results are obtained through a numerical integration of the Schr\"odinger equation. The case of a resonant ionization is also considered. The modulation of the frequency results in changing the instantaneous rate of decay of the initial state, in inducing additional population oscillations for multilevel systems, and in additional peaks in the photoelectron spectra.
