Abstract

We study the gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves of interacting bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices, taking into account the interaction from the weak to the strong limits. It is shown that composition relation between the gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves exists for the whole span of the interaction strength. The linear stability analysis indicates that the gap solitons are stable when their energies are near the bottom of the linear Bloch band gap. By increasing the interaction strength, the stable gap solitons can become unstable. It is argued that the stable gap solitons can easily be formed in a weakly interacting system with energies near the bottom of the lower-level linear Bloch band gaps.

Dynamical Stability of Gap Soliton of One-Dimensional Condensate in Optical Lattices with Strong Interatomic Interaction

Denglong Wang, Xiaohong Yan, Fengjiao Wang

By developing the multiple scales method, we analytically study the dynamics properties of gap soliton of Bose–Einstein condensate in optical lattices. It is shown that the gap soliton will appear at Brillouin zone edge of linear band spectrum of the condensates when the interatomic interaction strength is larger than the lattice depth. Moreover, the density of gap soliton starts to be relatively small, while it increases with time and becomes stable.

Gap solitons of a super-Tonks–Girardeau gas in a one-dimensional periodic potential

We study the stability of gap solitons of the super-Tonks-Girardeau bosonic gas in one-dimensional periodic potential. The linear stability analysis indicates that increasing the amplitude of periodic potential or decreasing the nonlinear interactions, the unstable gap solitons can become stable. In particular, the theoretical analysis and numerical calculations show that, comparing to the lower-family of gap solitons, the higher-family of gap solitons are easy to form near the bottoms of the linear Bloch band gaps. The numerical results also verify that the composition relations between various gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves are general and can exist in the super-Tonks-Girardeau phase.

Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Band-gap structure and solitons

Pearl J. Y. Louis, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Craig M. Savage +1 more

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Gap solitons and nonlinear Bloch states in Bose-Einstein condensates with current-dependent interactions

Jintao Xu, Qian Jia, Haibo Qiu +1 more

We show how the chiral properties of Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions and loaded in optical lattices can be observed in the realization of nonlinear Bloch states, whose spectrum lacks the usual periodic structure. Chirality is also manifested by spatially localized states, or gap solitons, which are found for positive rotation rates of the lattice at the energy gaps between the linear energy bands, whereas for negative rotations they appear in the semi-infinite gap of the linear spectrum. The stability of extended and localized states is checked through the spectrum of linear excitations and nonlinear time evolution of perturbed states, and the phenomenon of Bloch oscillations is explored. Our results are obtained in quasi-one-dimensional ring geometries with feasible experimental parameters.

Three-dimensional gap solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates supported by one-dimensional optical lattices

Antonio Muñoz Mateo, V. Delgado, Boris A. Malomed

We study fundamental and compound gap solitons (GSs) of matter waves in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices (OLs) in a three-dimensional (3D) weak-radial-confinement regime, which corresponds to realistic experimental conditions in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In this regime GSs exhibit nontrivial radial structures. Associated with each 3D linear spectral band exists a family of fundamental gap solitons that share a similar transverse structure with the Bloch waves of the corresponding linear band. GSs with embedded vorticity $m$ may exist inside bands corresponding to other values of $m$. Stable GSs, both fundamental and compound ones (including vortex solitons), are those which originate from the bands with lowest axial and radial quantum numbers. These findings suggest a scenario for the experimental generation of robust GSs in 3D settings.

SOLITON ON THE SEMI-INFINITE BAND GAP OF BEC IN AN OPTICAL LATTICE

D. L. Wang, X. H. Yan

By developing a multiple-scale method, we study analytically the dynamics of the soliton inside the semi-infinite band gap (SIBG) of quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in an optical lattice. In the linear case, a stable condition of soliton formation is obtained. For a weak nonlinearity, whether there occurs a spatially propagating or localized gap soliton is determined by the lattice depth. Meanwhile, we predict the existence of the dark (bright) gap solitons for the repulsive (attractive) interactions in the SIBG, different from that of the gap solitons in other energy gaps. And the collision of two dark (or bright) solitons is nearly elastic under a safe range of atomic numbers. An experimental protocol is further designed for observing these phenomena.
