Abstract

We consider the influence of a resonant control field on weak localization of light in ultracold atomic ensembles. Both steady-state and pulsed light excitation are considered. We show that the presence of a control field essentially changes the type of interference effects that occur under conditions of multiple scattering. For example, for some scattering polarization channels the presence of a control field can cause destructive interference through which the enhancement factor, normally considered to be greater than one, becomes less than one.

Influence of Electric and Magnetic Fields on Interference Effects upon Multiple Light Scattering in Cold Atomic Ensembles

Ларионов Николай Владимирович, Igor M. Sokolov

The correlation functions of the electromagnetic radiation scattered by an ensemble of atoms cooled to sub-Doppler temperatures and placed in an external static electric or magnetic field have been calculated by the diagram technique. Based on the derived relations, we have studied in detail the effect of coherent backscattering (CBS) of light. We have calculated the enhancement factor for CBS and analyzed its polarization and spectral dependences. We show that external fields affect the nature of multiple light scattering in an atomic ensemble, in particular, the character of interference upon such scattering, by leading to its optical anisotropy and related birefringence and dichroism. This, in turn, affects all of the observed CBS characteristics.

Interference and dephasing in weak localization of light

Mark D. Havey, Salim Balik, R. G. Olave +3 more

We report effects influencing enhancement (E) in coherent backscattering (CBS) of resonance radiation from ultracold Rb, and may have strong influence on efforts to observe strong localization. Theoretical results predict destructive interference in CBS, E<1. Time-dependent measurements of E show the influence of time-separation of different light scattering orders.

Weak localization of light by cold atoms: The impact of quantum internal structure

Cord Axel Müller, Thibaut Jonckheere, Christian Miniatura +1 more

Since the work of Anderson on localization, interference effects for the propagation of a wave in the presence of disorder have been extensively studied, as exemplified in coherent backscattering (CBS) of light. In the multiple scattering of light by a disordered sample of thermal atoms, interference effects are usually washed out by the fast atomic motion. This is no longer true for cold atoms where CBS has recently been observed. However, the internal structure of the atoms strongly influences the interference properties. In this paper, we consider light scattering by an atomic dipole transition with arbitrary degeneracy and study its impact on coherent backscattering. We show that the interference contrast is strongly reduced. Assuming a uniform statistical distribution over internal degrees of freedom, we compute analytically the single- and double-scattering contributions to the intensity in the weak-localization regime. The so-called ladder and crossed diagrams are generalized to the case of atoms and permit to calculate enhancement factors and backscattering intensity profiles for polarized light and any closed atomic dipole transition.

Strong-field coherent backscattering of light in ultracold atomic 85Rb

Salim Balik, P. Kulatunga, Charles I. Sukenik +3 more

We report experimental observations of polarization-dependent coherence loss occurring in strong-field multiple scattering of light in ultracold atomic 85Rb. A measure of coherence in multiple light scattering is the degree of contrast of the coherent backscattering enhancement from the vapour. For resonance saturation parameters up to 9, we see light-polarization-dependent modification of the backscattering enhancement, suggesting that inelastic atomic light scattering and dynamic atomic magnetization may play important roles in the multiple scattering process for 85Rb.

Electromagnetically induced optical anisotropy of an ultracold atomic medium

V. M. Datsyuk, Igor M. Sokolov, Dmitriy V. Kupriyanov +1 more

We consider radiative transport in ultracold atomic systems under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. We calculate the macroscopic susceptibility and scattering tensors of the light and show that essential anisotropic optical properties such as dichroism and birefringence naturally appear. In such a case, light propagation through a spatially nonhomogeneous atomic cloud is considered for an arbitrary direction of the probe light. We determine the polarization properties of the coherently transmitted probe light as well as the polarization dependence of light incoherently scattered in an arbitrary direction. Both the steady state regime and time-dependent case are discussed. Concrete calculations are performed for the case of an inhomogeneous and ultracold sample of $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ atoms.

Correlation and dynamic effects in coherent backscattering of light by optically dense ensembles of cold atoms

V. M. Datsyuk, Dmitriy V. Kupriyanov, Ларионов Николай Владимирович +1 more

Coherent backscattering of light by optically dense atomic ensembles is considered. The spectrum of scattered radiation is studied. The dynamics of the total intensity and enhancement factor is considered in the case of scattering of pulsed radiation. The spectral and temporal characteristics of coherent backscattering are analysed depending on the observation conditions. As an example, calculations are performed for an ensemble of 85 Rb atoms in a magnetooptical trap. It is shown that analysis of the correlation and dynamic properties of scattered radiation makes it possible to separate contributions from different orders of scattering and thereby to study the process of radiation trapping in dense media in more detail.
