Abstract

The full quantum dynamics of a spinon under external magnetic fields is investigated by using the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method within the microcanonical picture of transport. We show that the center of the spinon oscillates back and forth in the absence of dissipation. The quantum many-body behavior can be understood in a single-particle picture of transport and Bloch oscillations (BOs), where quantum fluctuations induce finite lifetimes. Transport, oscillations, and lifetimes can be tuned to some degree separately by external fields. Other nontrivial dynamics, such as resonance and chaos, are also discussed.

From confined spinons to emergent fermions: Observation of elementary magnetic excitations in a transverse-field Ising chain

Zhe Wang, Jianda Wu, Shenglong Xu +11 more

We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound ${\mathrm{SrCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the N\'eel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnetic phase, we observe three emergent fermionic excitations with different transverse-field dependencies. The nature of these modes is clarified by studying spin dynamic structure factor of a 1D transverse-field Heisenberg-Ising $(XXZ)$ model using the method of infinite time evolving block decimation. Our work reveals emergent quantum phenomena and provides a concrete system for testifying theoretical predications of one-dimension quantum spin models.

Transport and dynamics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems

Yousef Rahnavard

In this thesis, I use a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method based on the stochastic series expansion (SSE) to study transport, quantum phase diagrams, and dynamics of several one- and quasi-one-dimensional spin systems, including spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains, a frustrated four-leg spin tube, and N-leg spin-1/2 ladders. I establish a diffusive channel for the finite temperature spin transport of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Extensive finite size studies are detailed, allowing to extract the diffusion kernel in the thermodynamic limit. The diffusion is found to exhibit no anomalous exponent, moreover it is shown to survive for finite values of exchange anisotropy and magnetic fields, however with a strong suppression away from the isotropic point and for increasing magnetic fields. In the case of the spin-1 chain, I obtain the quantum phase diagram and spin dynamics in the combined presence of finite single-ion anisotropies and external magnetic fields. I also prove the existence of magnon modes and multi-particle continua and determine their evolutions as a function of anisotropies and magnetic fields. Moreover, I calculate the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear magnetic relaxation as a function of the single ion anisotropy. For the quasi-one-dimensional spin system of a frustrated four-leg tube, I investigate the regime of large rung coupling, where QMC is applicable. I evaluate the uniform spin susceptibility and the dynamic structure factor and show that in this regime the spin-tube exhibts a crossover from a gapped effective antiferromagnetic spin-2 chain behavior with massive magnons to a gapless Luttinger liquid phase with spinon excitations. Finally, I investigate the spin dynamics of N-leg spin-1/2 ladders with spacially isotropic interactions for N=1,..,5. I obtain the low-lying excitations of the spin ladders as a function of the number of legs and show that they exhibt an even-odd oscillation which is consistent with Haldane's conjecture and other known results for the thermodynamics of spin ladders.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics due to Magnetization Transport in Transverse Ising Chain

Sirshendu Bhattacharyya, Subinay Dasgupta

We study the dynamics caused by transport of transverse magnetization in one dimensional transverse Ising chain at zero temperature. We observe that a class of initial states in fermionic momentum-space produce spatial variation in transverse magnetization. Starting from such a state, we obtain the transverse magnetization analytically and then observe its dynamics in presence of a homogeneous constant field $\Gamma$. In contradiction with general expectation, whatever be the strength of the field, the magnetization of the system does not become homogeneous even after infinite time. In each site, the dynamics is associated with oscillations having two different timescales. The envelope of the larger timescale oscillation decays algebraically having an exponent which is universal for the entire class of such initial states. Signature of quantum criticality is also embedded in the dynamics in two aspects : Behavioral change shown by the frequency of large timescale oscillation at any site and the corresponding magnetization at infinity when they cross the quantum critical point.

Magnetic Bloch oscillations in a non-Hermitian quantum Ising chain

K. L. Zhang, Z. Song

We investigate the impacts of an imaginary transverse field on the dynamics of magnetic domain walls in a quantum Ising chain. We show that an imaginary field plays a similar role as a real transverse field in forming a low-lying Wannier-Stark ladder. However, analytical and numerical calculations of the time evolutions in both systems show that the corresponding Bloch oscillations exhibit totally different patterns for the same initial states. These findings reveal the nontrivial effect of non-Hermiticity on quantum spin dynamics.

Confinement: A real-time visualization

Zi Cai, Congjun Wu, Ulrich Schollwöck

Due to the mechanism of confinement, as known from quantum chromodynamics, it is difficult to observe individual particles carrying fractional quantum number (e.g., quark with fractional electric charge). A condensed-matter example of fractionalized particles is spinons in quasi-one-dimensional spin systems, which are domain walls in the background of N\'eel configurations carrying spin-$\frac{1}{2}$. Using the time-evolving block decimation algorithm, we visualize the nontrivial spinon dynamics induced by the confine mechanism in a two-leg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ladder. It can be illustrated by a simple single-particle picture of Bloch oscillation, not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. We propose the experimental realization and the real time detection of the spinon dynamics in the ultracold boson systems of ${}^{87}$Rb.

Time evolution during and after finite-time quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising chain

Tatjana Puškarov, Dirk Schuricht

We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.
