Nucleation of spontaneous vortices in trapped Fermi gases undergoing a BCS-BEC crossover

Abstract

We study the spontaneous formation of vortices during the superfluid condensation in a trapped fermionic gas subjected to a rapid thermal quench via evaporative cooling. Our work is based on the numerical solution of the time-dependent crossover Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to the heat diffusion equation. We quantify the evolution of condensate density and vortex length as a function of a crossover phase parameter from BCS to BEC. The more interesting phenomena occur somewhat nearer to the BEC regime and should be experimentally observable; during the propagation of the cold front, the increase in condensate density leads to the formation of supercurrents toward the center of the condensate as well as possible condensate volume oscillations.

Spontaneous vortices in the formation of fermionic superfluid

Xiangpei Liu, Xing-Can Yao, Youjin Deng +5 more

The generation of spontaneous vortices and the formation of superfluids are closely intertwined. Here, we report an experimental study of quench dynamics across the superfluid phase transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas at unitarity, by ramping down the external trapping potential. The superfluid phase coherence is recorded, and several tens of vortices are found to be generated during the quench process. A universal growth dynamics is revealed that for different quenches, the experimental data of quasi-condensate collapse onto a single curve as a function of evolving time rescaled by characteristic coherence-formation time. Moreover, we find that for a wide range of quenches, the dependence of the vortex density on the quasi-condensate formation time, rather than the ramping time, is well described by the celebrated the Kibbble-Zurek mechanism. Our work paves the way to study the complex vortex dynamics in vortex turbulence systems.

Temperature-Dependent Decay of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Vortices across the BCS-BEC Crossover

Xiangpei Liu, Xing-Can Yao, Xiaopeng Li +5 more

We systematically study the decay of quasi-two-dimensional vortices in an oblate strongly interacting Fermi gas over a wide interaction range and observe that, as the system temperature is lowered, the vortex lifetime increases in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime but decreases at unitarity and in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime. The observations can be qualitatively captured by a phenomenological model simply involving diffusion and two-body collisional loss, in which the vortex lifetime is mostly determined by the slower process of the two. In particular, the counterintuitive vortex decay in the BCS regime can be interpreted by considering the competition between the temperature dependence of the vortex annihilation rate and that of unpaired fermions. Our results suggest a competing mechanism for the complex vortex decay dynamics in the BCS-BEC crossover for the fermionic superfluids.

Dynamics of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover

Wen Wen, Guoxiang Huang

We study, both analytically and numerically, the formation and propagation of dark solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Starting from a superfluid order-parameter equation, we derive a Korteweg--de Vries equation for weak nonlinear excitations under quasi-one-dimensional and long-wavelength approximations. We present dark soliton solutions valid for both BCS and BEC limits and also for the crossover, and show that dark solitons in different superfluid regimes possess different features. Particularly, a dark soliton in the BCS (BEC) regime has larger (smaller) propagating velocity and smaller (larger) spatial width. Upon moving to the boundary of the condensate, it generally decelerates and generates small radiations, which display different behavior in different superfluid regimes. We study also a head-on collision between two dark solitons and demonstrate that the phase shift due to the collision changes nonmonotonically along the BCS-BEC crossover. All analytical results are checked by numerical simulations, and good agreement between them is found.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

Vortex state in a superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

Yuki Kawaguchi, Tetsuo Ohmi

We consider a single vortex in a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover regime near a Feshbach resonance. The effect of the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate upon the vortex structure is discussed within the mean field approximation at zero temperature. Using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation of the fermion-boson coupled model, we calculate density distributions of atoms and molecules. As the number of the molecules increases, both atomic and molecular density changes from BCS-like distribution to BEC-like. We also study the change of the vortex core size in the crossover regime.

Dynamic formation of quasicondensate and spontaneous vortices in a strongly interacting Fermi gas

Xiangpei Liu, Xing-Can Yao, Youjin Deng +6 more

We report an experimental study of quench dynamics across the superfluid transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by ramping down the trapping potential. The nonzero quasicondensate number ${N}_{0}$ at temperatures significantly above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the unitary and the BEC regimes is consistent with the pseudogap physics via preformed pairs. Below ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$, a rapid growth of ${N}_{0}$ is accompanied by the spontaneous generation of tens of vortices. We observe a power-law scaling of the vortex density versus the quasicondensate formation time, consistent with the Kibble-Zurek theory. Our work provides an example of studying emerged many-body physics by quench dynamics and paves the way for studying the quantum turbulence in a strongly interacting Fermi gas.
