Abstract

Using exact diagonalization in the spherical geometry, we investigate systems of localized quasiholes at $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ for interactions interpolating between the pure Coulomb and the three-body interaction for which the Moore-Read state is the exact ground state. We show that the charge $e/4$ quasihole can be easily localized by means of a $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function pinning potential. Using a tuned smooth pinning potential, the quasihole radius can be limited to approximately three magnetic length units. For systems of two quasiholes, adiabatic continuity between the Moore-Read and the Coulomb limit holds for the ground state, while for four quasiholes, the lowest two energy states exhibit adiabatic continuity. This implies the existence of a Majorana fermion for pure Coulomb interaction. We also present preliminary results in the Coulomb limit for braiding in systems containing four quasiholes, with up to 14 electrons, diagonalizing in the full spin-polarized sector of the second Landau-level Hilbert space.

Edge Excitations and Non-Abelian Statistics in the Moore-Read State: A Numerical Study in the Presence of Coulomb Interaction and Edge Confinement

Xin Wan, Kun Yang, Edward H. Rezayi

We study the ground state and low-energy excitations of fractional quantum Hall systems on a disk at a filling fraction nu = 5/2, with Coulomb interaction and a background confining potential. We find the Moore-Read ground state is stable within a finite but narrow window in parameter space. The corresponding low-energy excitations contain a fermionic branch and a bosonic branch, with widely different velocities. A short-range repulsive potential can stabilize a charge +e/4 quasihole at the center, leading to a different edge excitation spectrum due to the change of boundary conditions for Majorana fermions, clearly indicating the non-Abelian nature of the quasihole.

Non-Abelian braiding in Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall Phases from realistic interactions

Ha Quang Trung, Bo Yang

We propose a method of realizing non-Abelian braiding of fractionalized quasiholes in the Laughlin fractional quantum Hall phase at $ν=1/3$ with realistic two-body interactions within the lowest Landau level. It is numerically shown that low-lying gapped excitations near $ν=1/3$ are contained almost entirely within the null space of the three-body Moore-Read model Hamiltonian. They are thus quantum fluids of non-Abelian quasiholes that are in principle physically accessible. In particular, Laughlin ground state can be described as a fluid of ``$ψ$-type" quasiholes formed by binding a magnetic flux with a Majorana fermion (MF), and the Laughlin quasiholes are described by the ``$1$-type'' quasiholes, which are magnetic fluxes without a MF attached. Within the Laughlin phase, Laughlin quasiholes can be locally fractionalized into non-Abelian quasiholes, when the strong attraction between them is overcome by properly designed one-body electronstatic trapping potentials. Extensive numerics with proper finite-size scaling corroborate this physical picture, and our study points to the possibility of realizing non-Abelian braiding within an Abelian topological phase in experiment without the need for fine-tuning realistic electron-electron interaction.

Fractional Quantum Hall State at ν=52 and the Moore-Read Pfaffian

M. Storni, R. Morf, S. Das Sarma

Using exact diagonalization we show that the spin-polarized Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is adiabatically connected with the Moore-Read wave function for systems with up to 18 electrons on the surface of a sphere. The ground state is protected by a large gap for all system sizes studied. Furthermore, varying the Haldane pseudopotentials v{1} and v{3}, keeping all others at their value for the Coulomb interaction, energy gap and overlap between ground- and Moore-Read state form hills whose positions and extent in the (v{1},v{3}) plane coincide. We conclude that the physics of the Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is captured by the Moore-Read state. Such an adiabatic connection is not found at nu=1/2, unless the width of the interface wave function or Landau level mixing effects are large enough. Yet, a Moore-Read-phase at nu=1/2 appears unlikely in the thermodynamic limit.

Exactly solvable Hamiltonian for non-Abelian quasiparticles

Koji Kudo, Anirban Sharma, G. J. Sreejith +1 more

Particles obeying non-Abelian braid statistics have been predicted to emerge in the fractional quantum Hall effect. In particular, a model Hamiltonian with short-range three-body interaction (${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{V}}_{3}^{\text{Pf}}$) between electrons confined to the lowest Landau level provides exact solutions for quasiholes, and thereby allows a proof of principle for the existence of quasiholes obeying non-Abelian braid statistics. We construct, in terms of two- and three-body Haldane pseudopotentials, a model Hamiltonian that can be solved exactly for both quasiholes and quasiparticles, and provide evidence of non-Abelian statistics for the latter as well. The structure of the quasiparticle states of this model is in agreement with that predicted by the bipartite composite-fermion model of quasiparticles. We further demonstrate, for systems for which exact diagonalization is possible, adiabatic continuity for the ground state, the ordinary neutral excitation, and the topological exciton as we deform our model Hamiltonian continuously into the lowest Landau-level ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{V}}_{3}^{\text{Pf}}$ Hamiltonian.

Fractional quantum Hall effect at ν=5∕2 : Ground states, non-Abelian quasiholes, and edge modes in a microscopic model

Xin Wan, Zi-Xiang Hu, Edward H. Rezayi +1 more

We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5∕2$, based on the disk geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semirealistic confining potential. We also mix in a three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read-like state. From the evolution of the edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole and/or quasiparticle (with charge $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}e∕4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters, we estimate the decoherence length to be around $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point-contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge), while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).

Interface and phase transition between Moore-Read and Halperin 331 fractional quantum Hall states: Realization of chiral Majorana fermion

Kun Yang

We consider an interface separating the Moore-Read state and Halperin 331 state in a half-filled Landau level, which can be realized in a double quantum well system with varying interwell tunneling and/or interaction strengths. In the presence of electron tunneling and strong Coulomb interactions across the interface, we find that all charge modes localize and the only propagating mode left is a chiral Majorana fermion mode. Methods to probe this neutral mode are proposed. A quantum phase transition between the Moore-Read and Halperin 331 states is described by a network of such Majorana fermion modes. In addition to a direct transition, they may also be separated by a phase in which the Majorana fermions are delocalized, realizing an incompressible state which exhibits quantum Hall charge transport and bulk heat conduction.
