Abstract

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) plays an important role in the description of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at the mean-field level. The GPE belongs to the class of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations which are known to feature dynamical instability and collapse for attractive nonlinear interactions. We show that the GPE with repulsive nonlinear interactions typical for BECs features chaotic wave dynamics. We find positive Lyapunov exponents for BECs expanding in periodic and aperiodic smooth external potentials, as well as disorder potentials. Our analysis demonstrates that wave chaos characterized by the exponential divergence of nearby initial wave functions is to be distinguished from the notion of nonintegrability of nonlinear wave equations. We discuss the implications of these observations for the limits of applicability of the GPE, the problem of Anderson localization, and the properties of the underlying many-body dynamics.

Wave chaos as signature for depletion of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Iva Březinová, Axel U. J. Lode, Alexej I. Streltsov +3 more

We study the expansion of repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in shallow one-dimensional potentials. We show for these systems that the onset of wave chaos in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), that is, the onset of exponential separation in Hilbert space of two nearby condensate wave functions, can be used as an indication for the onset of depletion of the BEC and the occupation of excited modes within a many-body description. Comparison between the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree for bosons method and the GPE reveals a close correspondence between the many-body effect of depletion and the mean-field effect of wave chaos for a wide range of single-particle external potentials. In the regime of wave chaos the GPE fails to account for the fine-scale quantum fluctuations because many-body effects beyond the validity of the GPE are non-negligible. Surprisingly, despite the failure of the GPE to account for the depletion, coarse-grained expectation values of the single-particle density such as the overall width of the atomic cloud agree very well with the many-body simulations. The time-dependent depletion of the condensate could be investigated experimentally, for example, via decay of coherence of the expanding atom cloud.

Time-dependent variational approach for Bose–Einstein condensates with nonlocal interaction

Fernando Haas, Bengt Eliasson

The nonlinear dynamics of self-bound Bose–Einstein matter waves under the action of an attractive nonlocal and a repulsive local interaction is analyzed by means of a time-dependent variational formalism. The mean-field model described by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) is reduced to a single second-order conservative ordinary differential equation admitting a potential function. The stable fixed points and the linear oscillation frequencies of the breather modes are determined. The chosen nonlocal interactions are a Gaussian-shaped potential and a van der Waals-like potential. The variational solutions are compared with direct numerical simulations of the GPE, for each of these nonlocalities. The spatio-temporal frequency spectra of linear waves are also determined.

THREE-BODY INTERACTIONS BEYOND THE GROSS–PITAEVSKII EQUATION AND MODULATIONAL INSTABILITY OF BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

D. Belobo Belobo, G. H. Ben-Bolie, Timoléon Crépin Kofané

Beyond the mean-field theory, a new model of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) is derived using an appropriate phase-imprint on the old wavefunction. This modified version of the GPE in addition to the two-body interactions term, also takes into account effects of the three-body interactions. The three-body interactions consist of a quintic term and the delayed nonlinear response of the condensate system term. Then, the modulational instability (MI) of the new GPE confined in an attractive harmonic potential is investigated. The analytical study shows that the three-body interactions destabilize more the condensate system while the external potential alleviates the instability. Numerical results confirm the theoretical predictions. Further numerical investigations of the behavior of solitons reveal that the three-body interactions enhance the appearance of solitons, increase the number of solitons generated and deeply change the lifetime of solitons. Moreover, the external potential delays the appearance of solitons. Besides, a new initial condition is introduced which enables to increase the number of solitons created and deeply affects the trail of chains of solitons generated. Moreover, the MI of a condensate without the external potential, and in a repulsive potential is also investigated.

Nonlinear matter wave dynamics with a chaotic potential

S. A. Gardiner, Dieter Jaksch, Ralph Dum +2 more

We consider the case of a cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with an additional chaotic potential, in the sense that such a potential produces chaotic dynamics in classical mechanics. We derive and describe an appropriate semiclassical limit to such a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, using a semiclassical interpretation of the Wigner function, and relate this to the hydrodynamic limit of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation used in the context of Bose-Einstein condensation. We investigate a specific example of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with such a chaotic potential, the one-dimensional \ensuremath{\delta}-kicked harmonic oscillator, and its semiclassical limit, discovering in the process an interesting interference effect, where increasing the strength of the repulsive nonlinearity promotes localization of the wave function. We explore the feasibility of an experimental realization of such a system in a Bose-Einstein condensate experiment, giving a concrete proposal of how to implement such a configuration, and considering the problem of condensate depletion.

The Dynamic of Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate Under Noise

Eren Tosyalı, F. Aydogmus Sen

It is known that Bose-Einstein Condansate is well described by the non-linear Schrodinger equation known as the Gross Pitaevskii Equation (GPE) with the macroscopic wave function which evaluates with time and space. Many studies have been performed on nonlinear properties in Bose-Einstein Condansate. In this study, we present some numerical results of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with the external potential under noise. The phase portraits and Poincaré sections of the system are simulated numerically both with and without noise.

Nonlinear Schrodinger equations for Bose-Einstein condensates

Luigi Galati, Shijun Zheng

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or more generally the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, models the Bose-Einstein condensates in a macroscopic gaseous superfluid wave-matter state in ultra-cold temperature. We provide analytical study of the NLS with L2 initial data in order to understand propagation of the defocusing and focusing waves for the BEC mechanism in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Numerical simulations are performed for the two-dimensional GPE with anisotropic quadratic potentials.
