THE STRUCTURES OF STATE SPACE CONCERNING QUANTUM DYNAMICAL SEMIGROUPS

Abstract

Each semigroup describing time evolution of an open quantum system on a finite dimensional Hilbert space is related to a special structure of this space. It is shown how the space can be decomposed into orthogonal subspaces: One part is related to decay, some subspaces of the other subspace are ranges of the stationary states. Specialities are highlighted where the complete positivity of evolutions is actually needed for analysis, mainly for evolution of coherence. Decompositions are done the same way for discrete as for continuous time evolutions, but they may show differences: Only for discrete semigroups there may appear cases of sudden decay and of perpetual oscillation. Concluding the analysis, we identify the relation of the state space structure to the processes of decay, decoherence, dissipation and dephasing.

Analysis of quantum semigroups with GKS–Lindblad generators: II. General

Bernhard Baumgartner, Heide Narnhofer

Semigroups describing the time evolution of open quantum systems in finite-dimensional spaces have generators of a special form, known as Lindblad generators. These generators and the corresponding processes of time evolution are analyzed and characterized as decay, dissipation and dephasing. In relation to these processes the Hilbert space of the system is equipped with a special structure, a decomposition into a sum of mutually orthogonal subspaces. The complete set of all the stationary states and the asymptotic behavior of the evolutions are presented in detail. Some unusual special facts about invariant operators and symmetries are studied and examples are demonstrated. Perturbation theory for the structure and for the stationary states is discussed and performed in case studies.

Operator Algebras and Quantum Dynamics: Semigroup Methods in Infinite Dimensions

Anam Ghafoor, Ume Roman, Sawaiba Yousaf

Background: Operator algebras and quantum dynamical semigroups are the mathematical tools of choice for understanding open quantum systems, especially in infinite-dimensional spaces. Such tools are extremely important for the time development of quantum systems out of equilibium under the influence of environment, where conventional finite dimensional methods do not include all possibilities for interaction. Objective: The objects of the present research are the r-properties and the decompositions of generators of quantum dynamical semigroups on infinite-dimensional spaces including their Hamiltonian and dissipative part, semigroup continuity, stationary states, and positivity improvement. The aim is to set a fundament in order to think about long-time dynamics in open quantum systems. Methods: The theorem Hille–Yosida is used to get conditions for the semigroup strongly continuous generated by unbounded operators. The time-evolution operator of the system is approximated with both Gaussian quadrature and Monte Carlo integration during infinitesimal time slices, by using Inf-LCHS in conjunction. Generators were studied under decomposition of their Hamiltonian and dissipative parts, while commutant algebras were investigated for irreducibility and positivity enhancement. Results: Most systems studied for these properties presented a singular decomposition, strong and weak semigroup continuity, existence of stationary states and positivity improvement. The counterexamples were the systems with in a lack of verification for dissipative parts, and they lost smoothing property, uniqueness of decomposition, partial semigroup continuity or large errors in approximation when we perform numerically. Conclusions: The combination of the methods of operator algebra with state-of-the-art simulation techniques yields a powerful approach to study infinite-dimensional quantum dynamics. Although dissipative components are not yet completely characterized, the results improve our understanding of generator structures and long-term system behavior which will help future work in quantum statistical mechanics and quantum information theory.

Decompositions of Hilbert spaces, stability analysis and convergence probabilities for discrete-time quantum dynamical semigroups

Giuseppe Ilario Cirillo, Francesco Ticozzi

We investigate convergence properties of discrete-time semigroup quantum dynamics, including asymptotic stability, probability and speed of convergence to pure states and subspaces. These properties are of interest in both the analysis of uncontrolled evolutions and the engineering of controlled dynamics for quantum information processing. Our results include two Hilbert space decompositions that allow for deciding the stability of the subspace of interest and for estimating of the speed of convergence, as well as a formula to obtain the limit probability distribution for a set of orthogonal invariant subspaces.

State Space Decomposition of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups

Nicolas Mousset, Nina H. Amini

The mean evolution of an open quantum system in continuous time is described by a time continuous semigroup of quantum channels (completely positive and trace-preserving linear maps). Baumgartner and Narnhofer presented a general decomposition of the underlying Hilbert space into a sum of invariant subspaces, also called enclosures. We propose a new reading of this result, inspired by the work of Carbone and Pautrat. In addition, we apply this decomposition to a class of open quantum random walks and to quantum trajectories, where we study its uniqueness.

Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems I, Oscillation and Decay

Marco Merkli

We develop a framework to analyze the dynamics of a finite-dimensional quantum system S in contact with a reservoir R . The full, interacting SR dynamics is unitary. The reservoir has a stationary state but otherwise dissipative dynamics. We identify a main part of the full dynamics, which approximates it for small values of the SR coupling constant, uniformly for all times t≥0 . The main part consists of explicit oscillating and decaying parts. We show that the reduced system evolution is Markovian for all times. The technical novelty is a detailed analysis of the link between the dynamics and the spectral properties of the generator of the SR dynamics, based on Mourre theory. We allow for SR interactions with little regularity, meaning that the decay of the reservoir correlation function only needs to be polynomial in time, improving on the previously required exponential decay. In this work we distill the structural and technical ingredients causing the characteristic features of oscillation and decay of the SR dynamics. In the companion paper [27] we apply the formalism to the concrete case of an N -level system linearly coupled to a spatially infinitely extended thermal bath of non-interacting Bosons.

Attractor Subspace and Decoherence-Free Algebra of Quantum Dynamics

Daniele Amato, Paolo Facchi, Arturo Konderak

In this review we discuss some results on the asymptotic dynamics of finite-dimensional open quantum systems in the Heisenberg picture. Both the spectral and algebraic approaches to this topic are addressed, with particular emphasis on their relationship. The analysis is conducted in both the discrete-time and the continuous-time Markovian settings. In the final part of the work, some issues emerging in the infinite-dimensional case are also discussed. In particular, we provide an example of a Markovian evolution whose decoherence-free algebra is a type III von Neumann algebra.
