Abstract

We study the behavior of the Rabi oscillations of a driven central spin (qubit) coupled to an antiferromagnetic spin bath (environment). It is found that the decoherence behavior of the central spin depends on the detuning, driving strength, qubit–bath coupling and an important factor Ω, associated with the number of coupled atoms, the detailed lattice structure and the temperature of the environment. If detuning exists, Rabi oscillations may show the behavior of collapses and revivals; however, if detuning is absent, such a behavior will not appear. We investigate the weighted frequency distribution of the time evolution of the central spin inversion and give a reasonable explanation of this phenomenon of collapses and revivals. We also discuss the decoherence and pointer states of the qubit from the perspective of von Neumann entropy. We found that the eigenstates of the qubit self-Hamiltonian emerge as pointer states in the weak system–environment coupling limit.

Dynamics of the homogeneous two-qubit X X Z central spin model with the spin bath prepared in superpositions of symmetric Dicke states

Zejiang Li, Pei Yang, Wen‐Long You +1 more

We obtain exact dynamics of a two-qubit central spin model (CSM) consisting of two interacting qubits homogeneously coupled to a spin bath via the $XXZ$-type coupling, with the bath initially prepared in linear superpositions of the symmetric Dicke states. Using the interaction picture Hamiltonian with respect to the non-spin-flipping part of the model, we derive a sequence of equations of motion within each magnetization sector satisfied by the probability amplitudes of the time-evolved state. These equations of motion admit analytical solutions for the single-qubit CSM in which one of the two central qubits decouples from the rest of the system. Based on this, we provide a quantitative interpretation to the observed collapse-revival phenomena in the single-qubit Rabi oscillations when the bath is prepared in the spin coherent state. We then study the disentanglement and coherence dynamics of two initially entangled noninteracting qubits when the two qubits interact with individual baths or with a common bath. For individual baths, the coherent dynamics is found to be positively correlated to the single-qubit purity dynamics, and entanglement sudden disappearance and revivals are observed in both cases. The entanglement creation of two initially separable qubits coupled to a common bath is also studied and collapse and revival behaviors in the entanglement dynamics are observed. Choosing the equally weighted state and the $W$-class states as the bath initial states, we finally study the dynamics of entanglement between two individual bath spins and demonstrate the entanglement sharing mechanism in such a system.

Decoherence of a single spin coupled to an interacting spin bath

Ning Wu, Nina Fröhling, Xing Xi +4 more

Decoherence of a central spin coupled to an interacting spin bath via inhomogeneous Heisenberg coupling is studied by two different approaches, namely an exact equations of motion (EOMs) method and a Chebyshev expansion technique (CET). By assuming a wheel topology of the bath spins with uniform nearest-neighbor $XX$-type intrabath coupling, we examine the central spin dynamics with the bath prepared in two different types of bath initial conditions. For fully polarized baths in strong magnetic fields, the polarization dynamics of the central spin exhibits a collapse-revival behavior in the intermediate-time regime. Under an antiferromagnetic bath initial condition, the two methods give excellently consistent central spin decoherence dynamics for finite-size baths of $N\ensuremath{\le}14$ bath spins. The decoherence factor is found to drop off abruptly on a short time scale and approach a finite plateau value which depends on the intrabath coupling strength nonmonotonically. In the ultrastrong intrabath coupling regime, the plateau values show an oscillatory behavior depending on whether $N/2$ is even or odd. The observed results are interpreted qualitatively within the framework of the EOM and perturbation analysis. The effects of anisotropic spin-bath coupling and inhomogeneous intrabath bath couplings are briefly discussed. Possible experimental realization of the model in a modified quantum corral setup is suggested.

Rabi oscillations, decoherence, and disentanglement in a qubit–spin-bath system

Ning Wu, Arun Nanduri, HERSCHEL A. RABITZ

We examine the influence of environmental interactions on simple quantum systems by obtaining the exact reduced dynamics of a qubit coupled to a one-dimensional spin bath. In contrast to previous studies, both the qubit-bath coupling and the nearest-neighbor intrabath couplings are taken as the spin-flip $XX$ type. We first study the Rabi oscillations of a single qubit with the spin bath prepared in a spin coherent state, finding that nonresonance and finite intrabath interactions have significant effects on the qubit dynamics. Then we discuss the bath-induced decoherence of the qubit when the bath is initially in the ground state and show that the decoherence properties depend on the internal phases of the spin bath. By considering two independent copies of the qubit-bath system, we finally probe the disentanglement dynamics of two noninteracting entangled qubits. We find that entanglement sudden death appears when the spin bath is in its critical phase. We show that the single-qubit decoherence factor is an upper bound for the two-qubit concurrence.

Decoherence is a quantum-mechanical phenomenon severely limiting quantum information processing and storage capability in quantum computers. Decoherence refers to mechanisms that cause transfer of information from a quantum system to its bath. Typically, in theoretical and experimental considerations of different systems containing superconducting qubits, the coupling strength between a qubit and its bath has been assumed to be constant in time. In this case, many standard results in the dynamics of two-level systems follow. For example, due to decoherence, driven Rabi oscillations in a qubit have a characteristic decay time. In addition, the oscillations may take place at any phase. However, by considering time-dependent coupling to the bath, these phenomena may be absent. In this thesis, we demonstrate with numerical simulations of a time-dependent Lindblad master equation persistent Rabi oscillations in a qubit driven by a coherent drive tone. The persistent Rabi oscillations are induced by modulating the coupling of the qubit to the bath with a sinusoidal temporal shape. We observe that the temporal modulation enforces a limit cycle on the evolution of the dressed qubit state with a fixed phase relative to the phase of the sinusoidal modulation regardless of the initial state of the system. Through a synchronization-like phenomenon, the frequency of the Rabi oscillation adapts to match the frequency of the modulation. We determine the effect of different system parameters on the limit cycle and study how the amplitude of the persistent oscillation depends on the coupling modulation parameters. We also observe a similar effect in the freely evolving qubit precession. In addition, the qubit acts as a non-linear mixer, resulting in different linear combinations of the original modulation waveform appearing in the bath-induced Rabi oscillations. We also introduce a design for a physical system where our simulations can be verified experimentally.

Entanglement dephasing dynamics driven by a bath of spins

Jie Xu, Jun Jing, Ting Yu

We have studied the entanglement dynamics for a two-qubit system coupled to a spin environment of different configurations by a z–x-type interaction. Quantum dynamics of the models considered in this paper is solved analytically. Moreover, we show that simple and concise results may be obtained when certain approximations are properly made. Our purpose is to find out how the entanglement of a central spin system is affected by the pre-designed factors of the system and its environment, such as their initial states and the coupling constants between the system and its environment. Clearly, how the system is coupled to its environment will inevitably change the feature of entanglement evolution of the central spin system. Our major findings include the following: (i) the entanglement of the system of interest is sensitive to the number of spins in the environment, (ii) the initial states of the environment can profoundly affect the dynamics of the entanglement of the central spin system and (iii) the entangled environment can speed up the decay and revival of the entanglement of the central spin system. Our results exhibit some interesting features that have not been found for a bosonic environment.

Quantum Rabi model with dissipation and qubit driving

Luis Octavio Castaños-Cervantes

We consider the quantum Rabi model as an open system that is subject to dissipation, dephasing, and sinusoidal qubit driving. One can change to an interaction picture where the qubit-driving term disappears at the expense of changing the free energy of the qubit which becomes time dependent. If the driving frequency is large with respect to the rest of the parameters with the exception of the driving strength, then one can obtain an effective Hamiltonian that accurately describes the dynamics of the system. The driving has two effects: the qubit-transition frequency is changed and the qubit has reduced dephasing. The driving strength can be chosen so that the qubit-transition frequency is reduced, made equal to zero, or even made negative so that the excited and ground states of the qubit are interchanged. Therefore, sinusoidal qubit driving offers another method to control the qubit-transition frequency and to reduce qubit dephasing. Adjusting the driving strength allows one to consider a qubit with degenerate energy levels. Not taking dissipation into account, the evolution operator of the qubit-harmonic oscillator system is given by a linear combination of the orthogonal projectors onto the eigenstates of ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{x}$ followed by the evolution operator of a forced harmonic oscillator, the harmonic oscillator can be prepared in such a way that it is always found in a Schr\"odinger cat state, and the transition probability of the qubit can exhibit a collapse-revival behavior. In addition, the Born-Markov-secular master equation is deduced and the effects of dissipation are presented. In particular, smaller ultrastrong-coupling values are preferable over larger ultrastrong-coupling values and deep strong-coupling values in order to have long-lived, easily distinguishable Schr\"odinger cat states because the decoherence rate is inversely proportional to the square of the coupling. Finally, the qubit-harmonic oscillator system can be prepared in highly entangled states that are stable under dissipation.
