Probing Non-Abelian Statistics of Majorana Fermions in Ultracold Atomic Superfluid

Abstract

We propose an experiment to directly probe the non-abelian statistics of Majorana fermions by braiding them in an s-wave superfluid of ultracold atoms. We show that different orders of braiding operations give orthogonal output states that can be distinguished through Raman spectroscopy. Realization of Majorana states in an s-wave superfluid requires strong spin-orbital coupling and a controllable Zeeman field in the perpendicular direction. We present a simple laser configuration to generate the artificial spin-orbital coupling and the required Zeeman field in the dark-state subspace.

Non-Abelian Topological Order in s -Wave Superfluids of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

Masatoshi Sato, Yoshiro Takahashi, Satoshi Fujimoto

It is proposed that in s-wave superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser-field-generated effective spin-orbit interactions, a topological phase with gapless edge states and Majorana fermion quasiparticles obeying non-Abelian statistics is realized in the case with a large Zeeman magnetic field. Our scenario provides a promising approach to the realization of quantum computation based on the manipulation of non-Abelian anyons via an s-wave Feshbach resonance.

Creation, manipulation and detection of Majorana fermions with cold atoms in optical lattice

Mei, Feng, Chuan-Jia Shan, Xun‐Li Feng +5 more

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate the transverse field Ising model with cold atoms trapped in one-dimensional optical lattice. Majorana fermions are created at the ends of the optical lattice segment in topological phase. By controlling the addressing lasers, one can move, fuse and braid them. We also show that the non-Abelian braiding statistics of Majorana fermions can be demonstrated unambiguously through the construction of two braiding operations and distinguishing the resulting two output orthogonal collective spin states. A nice feature of the scheme is that the strong fluorescence provided by the collective spin state can be readily detected in experiment.

Majorana fermions with spin-orbit coupled cold atom in one-dimensional optical lattices

Chuan-Jia Shan, W. W. Cheng, J.B. Liu +2 more

We propose an alternative experimental scheme to detect the non-Abelian statistics of the Majorana fermions (MF) with a trapped atomic bosonic gas subject to a spin-orbit coupling in 1D optical lattices. The spin-orbit coupling leads to a faithful simulation of an arbitrary tunable XY spin model, where the anisotropy of the effective spin coupling can be controlled by adjusting the optical potentials, Feshbach resonance, and spin-orbit coupling. MF are created at the ends of the optical lattice segment in topological phase. By controlling the different addressing laser beams, one can move, braid, and exchange them. We also show that the non-Abelian statistics of MF can be demonstrated through distinguishing the states before and after braiding by detecting the parity operator of collective spin states.

Experimental Observation of a Topological Band Gap Opening in Ultracold Fermi Gases with Two-Dimensional Spin-Orbit Coupling

Zengming Meng, Lianghui Huang, Peng Peng +6 more

The recent experimental realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) opens a new avenue for exploring novel quantum states with ultracold atoms. However, in experiments for generating two-dimensional SOC (e.g., Rashba type), a perpendicular Zeeman field, which opens a band gap at the Dirac point and induces many topological phenomena, is still lacking. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally realize a simple scheme for generating two-dimensional SOC and a perpendicular Zeeman field simultaneously in ultracold Fermi gases by tuning the polarization of three Raman lasers that couple three hyperfine ground states of atoms. The resulting band gap opening at the Dirac point is probed using spin injection radio-frequency spectroscopy. Our observation may pave the way for exploring topological transport and topological superfluids with exotic Majorana and Weyl fermion excitations in ultracold atoms.

Probing Majorana fermions in spin-orbit-coupled atomic Fermi gases

Xia-Ji Liu, Lei Jiang, Han Pu +1 more

We examine theoretically the visualization of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional trapped ultracold atomic Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling. By increasing an external Zeeman field, the trapped gas transits from a nontopological to a topological superfluid, via a mixed phase in which both types of superfluids coexist. We show that the zero-energy Majorana fermion, supported by the topological superfluid and localized at the vortex core, may be visible through (i) the core density and (ii) the local density of states, which are readily measurable in experiment. We present a realistic estimate on experimental parameters for ultracold ${}^{40}$K atoms.

Detecting non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions in quantum nanowire networks

Zheng‐Yuan Xue

A scheme in semiconducting quantum nanowire structure has been proposed to demonstrate the non-Abelian statistics for Majorana fermions in terms of braid group. The Majorana fermions are localized at the endpoints of semiconducting wires, which are deposited on an s -wave superconductor. The non-Abelian nature of Majorana fermion is manifested by the fact that the output of the different applied orders of two operations, constructed by the braid group elements, are different. In particular, the difference can be unambiguously imprinted on the quantum states of a superconducting flux qubit.
