Abstract

The generalized multispin Jahn-Teller model on a finite lattice or formally equivalent Dicke model extended to two long-wavelength coherent bosons of different frequencies is shown to exhibit a crossover between the polaron-modified "quasi-normal" and the squeezed "radiation" domains. We investigate effects of two kinds of interfering fluctuations on the phase crossover and on statistical characteristics of boson complex spectra: (i) Fluctuations in the electron subsystem- finite-size quantum fluctuations- are responsible for the dephasing of the coherence in the radiation domain and for the moderate occupation of the excited states in the normal domain. In the quasiclassical limit, radiation phase implies existence of a coherent acoustic super-radiant phase. (ii) Level-spacing fluctuations in excited boson level subsystem with strong level repulsions. Related probability distributions are shown to be non-universally spread between the limiting universal Wigner-Dyson and Poisson distributions. We proved that the difference in boson frequencies is responsible for reaching the most stochastic limit of the Wigner-Dyson distribution. Instanton lattice as a sequence of tunneling events in the most chaotic radiation domain exhibits maximal number of level-avoidings (repulsions). The non-universality of the distributions is caused by boson correlations which compete the level repulsions.

Quantum phase transitions and quantum chaos in generalized Dicke and Jahn-Teller polaron model and finite-size effects

Eva Majerníková, Serge Shpyrko

The Dicke model extended to two bosons of different frequencies or equivalent generalized Jahn-Teller lattice model are shown to exhibit a spontaneous quantum phase transition between the polaron-modified "quasi-normal" and squeezed "radiation" phase with the transition point dependent on the frequencies. In a finite lattice a mixed domain of coexistence of the quasi-normal and modified radiation phase is created within the quasi-normal phase domain. There occurs a field-directed oscillation-assisted tunneling (hopping). The field is driven by simultaneous squeezing and polaron-dressing of the collective boson level mode due to the additional boson mode. In a finite lattice in the radiation domain there occurs a sequence of local tunnelings (oscillations) between two minima of a local potential weakly coupled to two assisting oscillations. The "radiation" phase reveals itself as an almost ideal instanton--anti-instanton gas phase. The correlations among the energy levels mediated by the additional mode in the mixed domain considerably reduce the level repulsions. As a consequence, the Wigner level spacing probability distribution of the two-boson Dicke model is non-universally reduced from the Wigner to the semi-Poisson and asymptotically to the Poisson distribution of level spacings. The correlations cause a suppression of the coherence of the radiation phase as finite-size effect. Possible applications of the present theory are suggested.

Onset of Quantum Thermalization in Jahn-Teller model

Yoana R. Chorbadzhiyska, Peter A. Ivanov

We investigate the onset of quantum thermalization in a system governed by the Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian which describes the interaction between a single spin and two bosonic modes. We find that the Jahn-Teller model exhibits a finite-size quantum phase transition between the normal phase and two types of super-radiant phase when the ratios of spin-level splitting to each of the two bosonic frequencies grow to infinity. We test the prediction of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis in the Jahn-Teller model. We show that the expectation value of the spin observable quickly approaches its long-time average value. We find that the distance between the diagonal ensemble average and the microcanonical ensemble average of the spin observable decreases with the effective thermodynamic parameter. Furthermore, we show that the mean-time fluctuations of the spin observable are small and are inversely proportional to the effective system dimension.

Incipience of quantum chaos in the Jahn-Teller model

Eva Majerníková, Serge Shpyrko

We studied complex spectra of a two-level electron system coupled to two phonon (vibron) modes represented by the product of E and e Jahn-Teller model. For particular rotation quantum numbers we found a coexistence of up to three regions of the spectra: (i) the dimerized region of long-range-ordered (extended) pairs of oscillating levels, (ii) the short-range-ordered (localized) "kink lattice" of avoiding levels, and (iii) the intermediate region of kink nucleation with variable range of ordering. This structure appears above a certain critical line as a function of interaction strength. The level clustering and level avoiding generic patterns reflect themselves in several intermittent regions between up to three branches of spectral entropies. Linear scaling behavior of the widths of level curvature probability distributions provides the conventionally adopted indication for the presence of quantum chaos. Level spacing probability distributions show peculiarities of the partial (for fixed quantum angular momentum) as well as of the cumulative (all angular momenta) case. The clustering of levels with two and three dominant spacings at fixed angular momenta causes notable deviations of the cumulative distributions from the Poissonian one.

Chaos and the quantum phase transition in the Dicke model

Clive Emary, Tobias Brandes

We investigate the quantum-chaotic properties of the Dicke Hamiltonian; a quantum-optical model that describes a single-mode bosonic field interacting with an ensemble of N two-level atoms. This model exhibits a zero-temperature quantum phase transition in the N --> infinity limit, which we describe exactly in an effective Hamiltonian approach. We then numerically investigate the system at finite N, and by analyzing the level statistics, we demonstrate that the system undergoes a transition from quasi-integrability to quantum chaotic, and that this transition is caused by the precursors of the quantum phase transition. Our considerations of the wave function indicate that this is connected with a delocalization of the system and the emergence of macroscopic coherence. We also derive a semiclassical Dicke model that exhibits analogues of all the important features of the quantum model, such as the phase transition and the concurrent onset of chaos.

Universal fluctuations and squeezing in a generalized Dicke model near the superradiant phase transition

D. S. Shapiro, W. V. Pogosov, Yu. E. Lozovik

In view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) nonstationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields, and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of a generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and numbers of two-level systems are finite. In this case, the superradiant quantum phase transition is changed to a fluctuational region in the phase diagram that reveals two types of critical behaviors. These are regimes of Dicke model (with discrete ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry), and that of anti-Tavis-Cummings and Tavis-Cummings $U(1)$ models. We show that squeezing parameters of photon condensate in these regimes show distinct temperature scalings. Besides, relative fluctuations of a photon number take universal values. We also find a temperature scale below which one approaches a zero-temperature quantum phase transition where quantum fluctuations dominate. Our effective theory is provided by a non-Goldstone functional for condensate mode and by Majorana representation of Pauli operators. We also discuss the Bethe ansatz solution for integrable $U(1)$ limits.
