Measurement of Berry Phase Associated with Higher Dimensional Orbital Angular Momentum of Light by Interference Method

Yuan Xu, Yuan-Yuan Huang, Ling Hu +5 more

Berry phase of higher-dimensional orbital angular momentum of light is studied. When an N th order orbital state, described by a vector in (N + 1)-dimensional space, evolves through a closed path in space of orbital states, there will exist a higher order orbital Berry phase. We calculate this phase by using the matrix transformation theory. A direct measurement of the higher-order orbital Berry phase is also carried out by the interference method. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical description, which shows that the Berry phase is proportional to the orbital angular momentum of light.

Parallel sorting of orbital and spin angular momenta of light in a record large number of channels

Gary F. Walsh, Luciano De Sio, David E. Roberts +3 more

Parallel sorting of orbital and spin angular momentum components of structured optical beams is demonstrated. Both spin channels are multiplexed within the novel orbital angular momentum (OAM) sorter, reducing the size, weight, and number of elements. The sorted states are linearly spaced over 70 topological charge values. We experimentally and theoretically evaluate the operational range and crosstalk between neighboring channels and find that 30 orbital angular momentum states are available per spin channel for quantum communication or cryptography. This is achieved using an angular momentum sorter that we developed based on geometric phase optical elements. We present two devices consisting of liquid crystal polymer films photoaligned with complex two-dimensional patterns.

Implementation of one-dimensional quantum walks on spin-orbital angular momentum space of photons

Pei Zhang, Bi‐Heng Liu, Ruifeng Liu +3 more

Photons can carry spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM), which can be used to realize a qubit system and a high-dimension system, respectively. This spin-orbital system is very suitable for implementing one-dimensional discrete-time quantum random walks. We propose a simple scheme of quantum walks on the spin-orbital angular momentum space of photons, where photons walk on the infinite OAM space controlled by their SAM. By employing the recent invention of an optical device, the so-called ``$q$-plate,'' our scheme is more simple and efficient than others because there is no Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the scheme.
