Abstract

We study the Bose-Fermi mixture with infinite boson-boson repulsion and finite boson-fermion repulsion. Using a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation, we show that the system can be mapped to a repulsive Hubbard model and thus can be solved exactly for the case with equal boson and fermion masses. Using the Bethe-ansatz solutions, we investigate the ground-state properties of the mixture system. Our results indicate that the system with commensurate filling $n=1$ is a charge insulator but still a superfluid with nonvanishing superfluid density. We also briefly discuss the case with unequal boson and fermion masses.

Quantum phase transition and elementary excitations of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Shi-Jian Gu, Junpeng Cao, Shu Chen +1 more

The mixture of the scalar bosonic and the spinless or polarized fermionic cold atoms in the one-dimensional optical lattice is studied. The system is modeled by the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which shows different behavior from that of the Bose-Hubbard or the Fermi-Hubbard models. Because the $\text{SU}(1\ensuremath{\mid}1)$-supersymmetric Bethe ansatz solution gives an excellent approximation to this kind of mixed cold atomic systems, the ground-state properties of the system such as the densities of state in the momentum space are obtained based on the Bethe ansatz. If the number of bosons is equal to that of fermions and the filling factor is 1, it is found that there exists a critical on-site interaction ${U}_{c}$. If $U<{U}_{c}$, the ground state of the system is in the superfluid phase, while if $U>{U}_{c}$, the ground state is in the insulating phase. The superfluid-insulator transition occurs at ${U}_{c}$. From the analysis of the superfluid density, the value of the critical point is determined as ${U}_{c}=2.79256$, which is larger than the ${U}_{c}=0$ for the Fermi-Hubbard model and smaller than the ${U}_{c}=3.28$ for the Bose-Hubbard model. The elementary excitations and effective Hamiltonian in the strong-coupling limit are also discussed.

Two-component interacting Tonks-Girardeau gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Shu Chen, Junpeng Cao, Shi-Jian Gu

The two-component interacting Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice with infinite intra-component repulsive interactions and tunable inter-component repulsions is studied. By a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation, it is shown that this model can be solved exactly. The energy spectrum and explicit wave function are obtained. The physical quantities such as the off-diagonal density matrix, momentum distribution and single-particle von Neumann entropy of the present model display different properties from those of the Fermi-Hubbard model due to the different intrinsic symmetry of particles.

Exactly solvable case of a one-dimensional Bose–Fermi mixture

Adilet Imambekov, Eugene Demler

We consider a one-dimensional interacting Bose-Fermi mixture with equal masses of bosons and fermions, and with equal and repulsive interactions between Bose-Fermi and Bose-Bose particles. Such a system can be realized in experiments with ultracold boson and fermion isotopes in optical lattices. We use the Bethe-ansatz technique to find the ground state energy at zero temperature for any value of interaction strength and density ratio between bosons and fermions. We prove that the mixture is always stable against demixing. Combining exact solution with the local density approximation, we calculate density profiles and collective oscillation modes in a harmonic trap. In the strongly interating regime, we use exact wave functions to calculate correlation functions for bosons and fermions under periodic boundary conditions.

Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures on 1-D optical lattices

Pinaki Sengupta, Leonid P. Pryadko

We combine model mapping, exact spectral bounds, and a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the ground state phases of a mixture of ultracold bosons and spin-polarized fermions in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The exact boundary of the boson-demixing transition is obtained from the Bethe Ansatz solution of the standard Hubbard model. We prove that along a symmetry plane in the parameter space, the boson-fermion mixed phase is stable at all densities. This phase is a two-component Luttinger liquid for weak couplings or for incommensurate total density, otherwise it has a charge gap but retains a gapless mode of mixture composition fluctuations. The static density correlations are studied in these two limits and shown to have markedly different features.

Composite-fermionization of the mixture composed of Tonks gas and Fermi gas

Yajiang Hao

This paper investigates the ground-state properties of the mixture composed of the strongly interacting Tonks—Girardeau gas and spin polarized Fermi gas confined in one-dimensional harmonic traps, where the interaction between the Bose atoms and Fermi atoms is tunable. With a generalized Bose—Fermi transformation the mixture is mapped into a two-component Fermi gas. The homogeneous Fermi gas is exactly solvable by the Bethe-ansatz method and the ground state energy density can be obtained. Combining the ground-state energy function of the homogeneous system with local density approximation it obtains the ground-state density distributions of inhomogeneous mixture. It is shown that with the increase in boson—fermion interaction, the system exhibits composite-fermionization crossover.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Bess Fang, Patrizia Vignolo, Christian Miniatura +1 more

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a noninteracting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the one-body density matrices, exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions, and behavior of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C{p}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions ``fermionize'' under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.
