Quench dynamics of the topological quantum phase transition in the Wen-plaquette model

Abstract

We study the quench dynamics of the topological quantum phase transition in the two-dimensional transverse Wen-plaquette model, which has a phase transition from a ${Z}_{2}$ topologically ordered to a spin-polarized state. By mapping the Wen-plaquette model onto a one-dimensional quantum Ising model, we calculate the expectation value of the plaquette operator ${F}_{i}$ during a slowly quenching process from a topologically ordered state. A logarithmic scaling law of quench dynamics near the quantum phase transition is found, which is analogous to the well-known static critical behavior of the specific heat in the one-dimensional quantum Ising model.

Topological quantum phase transition in the transverse Wen-plaquette model

Jing Yu, Su-Peng Kou, Xiao-Gang Wen

In this paper we study the quantum phase transition between a quantum state with topological order and that without topological order (TQPT) in the transverse Wen-plaquette model. By mapping the transverse Wen-plaquette model onto the d =1 Ising model in a transverse field, some exact results of the TQPT are obtained. The transverse Wen-plaquette model undergoes a continuous TQPT which is characterized in terms of the expectation values of string operators. In particular, the duality relationship between open-string and closed-string is explored —the expectation value of closed-string operator and that of open-string operator play the role of "order parameter" and "disorder order parameter" of the topological order, respectively. At the critical point the "condensation" of both Z 2 vortex and Z 2 charge indicates that the TQPT is a new type of phase transition beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm.

Floquet topological quantum phase transitions in the transverse Wen-plaquette model

Our aim in this work is to study the nonequilibrium behavior of the topological quantum phase transition in the transverse Wen-plaquette model. We show that under the effect of a nonadiabatic driving the system exhibits a new topological phase and a rich phase diagram. We define generalized topological order parameters by considering cycle-averaged expectation values of string operators in a Floquet state

Exact results of the quantum phase transition for the topological order

Jing Yu, Su-Peng Kou, Xiao-Gang Wen

In this paper a duality between the d=2 Wen-plaquette model in a transverse field and the d=1 Ising model in a transverse field is used to learn the nature of the quantum phase transition (QPT) between a spin-polarized phase and a topological ordered state with the string-net condensation. The QPT is not induced by spontaneous symmetry breaking and there are no conventional Landau-type local order parameters. Instead the string-like non-local order parameters are introduced to describe the QPT. In particular, the duality character between the open-string and closed string for the QPT are explored.

Dynamical phase transitions in the fully connected quantum Ising model: Time period and critical time

Arun Sehrawat, Chirag Srivastava, Ujjwal Sen

We study dynamical properties of the finite-size fully connected Ising model with a transverse field at zero temperature. In a quench dynamics, we study the time period and the first critical time, which play important roles in the dynamical phase transitions, based on a dynamical order parameter and the Loschmidt rate, respectively. When all the spins are initially polarized in the direction of their mutual interaction, we show that both the time period and critical time diverge logarithmically with the system size at the dynamical critical point. When all the spins are initially in the direction of transverse field, both the time period and critical time exhibit logarithmic or power-law divergences depending on the final field strength. In the case of convergence, we provide estimates for the finite-size scaling and converged value. We also investigate the equilibrium phase transition, presenting approximate ground and first excited states away from the criticality, and compare their energy gap and bipartite and multipartite entanglements with the exact eigenstates.

Exact results for the criticality of quench dynamics in quantum Ising models

Ying Li, Mingxia Huo, Z. Song

Based on the obtained exact results we systematically study the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 transverse field Ising model with zero- and finite-temperature initial states. We focus on the magnetization of the system after a sudden change of the external field and a coherent time-evolution process. With a zero-temperature initial state, the quench magnetic susceptibility as a function of the initial field strength exhibits strongly similar scaling behaviors to those of the static magnetic susceptibility, and the quench magnetic susceptibility as a function of the final field strength shows a discontinuity at the quantum critical point. This discontinuity remains robust and always occurs at the quantum critical point even for the case of finite-temperature initial systems, which indicates a great advantage of employing quench dynamics to study quantum phase transitions.

Quantum phase transition from Z2×Z2 to Z2 topological order

Mohammad Hossein Zarei

Although the topological order is known as a quantum order in quantum many-body systems, it seems that there is not a one-to-one correspondence between topological phases and quantum phases. As a well-known example, it has been shown that all one-dimensional (1D) quantum phases are topologically trivial [X. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 035107 (2011)]. By such facts, it seems a challenging task to understand when a quantum phase transition between different topological models necessarily reveals different topological classes of them. In this paper, we make an attempt to consider this problem by studying a phase transition between two different quantum phases which have a universal topological phase. We define a Hamiltonian as interpolation of the toric code model with ${Z}_{2}$ topological order and the color code model with ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ topological order on a hexagonal lattice. We show such a model is exactly mapped to many copies of 1D quantum Ising model in transverse field by rewriting the Hamiltonian in a new complete basis. Consequently, we show that the universal topological phase of the color code model and the toric code model reflects in the 1D nature of the phase transition. We also consider the expectation value of Wilson loops by a perturbative calculation and show that behavior of the Wilson loop captures the nontopological nature of the quantum phase transition. The result on the point of phase transition also shows that the color code model is strongly robust against the toric code model.
