Strong Coupling of a Mechanical Oscillator and a Single Atom

Klemens Hammerer, Margareta Wallquist, Claudiu Genes +6 more

We propose and analyze a setup to achieve strong coupling between a single trapped atom and a mechanical oscillator. The interaction between the motion of the atom and the mechanical oscillator is mediated by a quantized light field in a laser driven high-finesse cavity. In particular, we show that high fidelity transfer of quantum states between the atom and the mechanical oscillator is in reach for existing or near future experimental parameters. Our setup provides the basic toolbox from atomic physics for coherent manipulation, preparation, and measurement of micromechanical and nanomechanical oscillators.

Electro and Mechanical Oscillators

Stanislav Ordin

In order to determine the specifics of the quantization of motion of charged particles, a comparative analysis of the mechanical oscillator with the electro-mechanical and purely electrical oscillators was carried out. It has been shown that the use of the standard harmonic oscillator equation for quantization does not take into account the effect of electric charge inertia, which is taken into account when using the Heaviside impedance. The formal addition to the equation of the harmonic oscillator of a term determined by the inertia of the charge leads to contradictions. So, in order to UNDERSTAND quantization, a more physical refinement of the Schrödinger equation, embedded in the fundamentals of quantization, is required.
