Inelastic scattering of atoms in a double well

Abstract

We study a mixture of two light spin-1/2 fermionic atoms and two heavy atoms in a double-well potential. Inelastic scattering processes between both atomic species excite the heavy atoms and renormalize the tunneling rate and the interaction of the light atoms (polaron effect). The effective interaction of the light atoms changes its sign and becomes attractive for strong inelastic scattering. This is accompanied by a crossing of the energy levels from singly occupied sites at weak inelastic scattering to a doubly occupied and an empty site for stronger inelastic scattering. We are able to identify the polaron effect and the level crossing in the quantum dynamics.

Dimer states in atomic mixtures

K. Ziegler

A mixture of heavy atoms in a Mott state and light spin-1/2 fermionic atoms is studied in an optical lattice. Inelastic scattering processes between the two atomic species excite the heavy atoms and renormalize the tunneling rate as well as the interaction of the light atoms. An effective Hamiltonian for the latter is derived that describes tunneling of single fermions, tunneling of fermionic pairs, and an exchange of fermionic spins. Low-energy states of this Hamiltonian are a N\'eel state for strong effective repulsion, dimer states for moderate interaction, and a density wave of paired fermions for strong effective attraction.

Ondas de choque em condensados de Bose-Einstein e espalhamento inelástico de átomos em um potencial de dois poços

E. S. Annibale

In this thesis we study two different problems in the field of ultracold atoms: "Shock waves in Bose-Einstein condensates" and "Inelastic scattering of atoms in a double well".In the first problem, we study the supersonic flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) past a slender impenetrable macroscopic obstacle in the framework of the twodimensional (2D) defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS).Assuming the oncoming flow speed sufficiently high, we asymptotically reduce the original boundary-value problem for a steady flow past a slender body to the one-dimensional dispersive piston problem described by the nonstationary NLS equation, in which the role of time is played by the stretched x-coordinate and the piston motion curve is defined by the spatial body profile. Two steady oblique spatial dispersive shock waves (DSWs) spreading from the pointed ends of the body are generated in both half-planes.These are described analytically by constructing appropriate exact solutions of the Whitham modulation equations for the front DSW and by using a generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule for the oblique dark soliton fan in the rear DSW.We propose an extension of the traditional modulation description of DSWs to include the linear ship-wave pattern forming outside the nonlinear modulation region of the front DSW.Our analytic results are supported by direct 2D unsteady numerical simulations and are relevant to recent experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates freely expanding past obstacles. In the second problem, we study a mixture of two light spin-1/2 fermionic atoms and two heavy atoms in a double well potential.Inelastic scattering processes between both atomic species excite the heavy atoms and renormalize the tunneling rate and the interaction of the light atoms (polaron effect). The effective interaction of the light atoms changes its sign and becomes attractive for strong inelastic scattering. This is accompanied by a crossing of the energy levels from singly occupied sites at weak inelastic scattering to a doubly occupied and an empty site for stronger inelastic scattering. We are able to identify the polaron effect and the level crossing in the quantum dynamics.Em primeiro lugar, agradeço ao Prof. Arnaldo Gammal por TUDO! Quantum phases in mixtures of Fermionic atoms

Cenap Ates, K. Ziegler

A mixture of spin-polarized light- and heavy-Fermionic atoms on a finite-size two-dimensional optical lattice is considered at various temperatures and values of the coupling between the two atomic species. In the case where the heavy atoms are immobile in comparison to the light atoms, this system can be seen as a correlated binary alloy related to the Falicov-Kimball model. The heavy atoms represent a scattering environment for the light atoms. The distributions of the binary alloy are discussed in terms of strong- and weak-coupling expansions. We further present numerical results for the intermediate interaction regime and for the density of states of the light particles. The numerical approach is based on a combination of a Monte Carlo simulation and an exact diagonalization method. We find that the scattering by the correlated heavy atoms can open a gap in the spectrum of the light atoms, either for strong interaction or small temperatures.

Scattering of two heavy Fermi polarons: Resonances and quasibound states

Tilman Enss, Binh Tran, M. Rautenberg +6 more

Impurities in a Fermi sea, or Fermi polarons, experience a Casimir interaction induced by quantum fluctuations of the medium. When there is short-range attraction between impurities and fermions, also the induced interaction between two impurities is strongly attractive at short distance and oscillates in space for larger distances. We theoretically investigate the scattering properties and compute the scattering phase shifts and scattering lengths between two heavy impurities in an ideal Fermi gas at zero temperature. While the induced interaction between impurities is weakly attractive for weak impurity-medium interactions, we find that impurities strongly and attractively interacting with the medium exhibit resonances in the induced scattering with a sign change of the induced scattering length and even strong repulsion. These resonances occur whenever a three-body Efimov bound state appears at the continuum threshold. At energies above the continuum threshold, we find that the Efimov state in medium can turn into a quasibound state with a finite decay width.

Material-barrier tunnelling in one-dimensional few-boson mixtures

Anika C. Pflanzer, Sascha Zöllner, Peter Schmelcher

We study the quantum dynamics of strongly interacting few-boson mixtures in one-dimensional traps. If one species is strongly localized compared to the other (e.g., much heavier), it can serve as an effective potential barrier for that mobile component. Near the limit of infinite localization, we map this to a system of identical bosons in a double well. For realistic localization, the backaction of the light species on the ‘barrier’ atoms is explained—to lowest order—in terms of an induced attraction between these. Even in equilibrium, this may outweigh the bare intra-species interaction, leading to unexpected correlated states. Remarkably, the backaction drastically affects the inter-species dynamics, such as the tunnelling of an attractively bound pair of fermionized atoms.

Exact polaron-polaron interactions between heavy impurities in a quantum Hall fluid

Jia Wang, Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu

We present an exact solution for effective polaron-polaron interactions between heavy impurities, mediated by a sea of noninteracting light fermions in the quantum Hall regime with highly degenerate Landau levels. For weak attraction between impurities and fermions, where only the manifold of lowest Landau levels is relevant, we obtain an analytical expression of mediated polaron-polaron interactions. Remarkably, polaron interactions are exactly zero when fermions in the lowest Landau levels outnumber heavy impurities. For strong attraction, different manifolds of higher Landau levels come into play and we derive a set of equations that can be used to numerically solve the mediated polaron interaction potential. We find that the potential vanishes when the distance R between impurities is larger than the magnetic length, but strongly diverges at short range following a Coulomb form − 1 / R . Our exact results of polaron-polaron interactions might be examined in cold-atom setups, where a system of Fermi polarons in the quantum Hall regime is realized with a synthetic gauge field or under fast rotation. Our predictions could also be useful to understand the effective interaction between exciton-polarons in electron-doped semiconductors under strong magnetic field.
