Abstract

The phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling is investigated by a weak-coupling renormalization group method applicable beyond the usual continuum limit for the electron spectrum and coupling constants. We analyze the influence of irrelevant momentum dependent interactions on asymptotic properties of correlation functions and the nature of dominant phases for the lattice model under study.

Phase diagram and correlation functions of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in one dimension

Johannes Voit

The extended Hubbard model in one dimension is studied for half-filled bands using a continuum theory based on the Luttinger model. Interactions going beyond the Luttinger model are treated with a renormalization group. We compute correlation functions and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. It compares favorably with earlier numerical work. Specifically, we identify additional interaction terms coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom; one of them is shown to mediate the crossover from a continuous to a first-order transition from spin- to charge-density waves at a finite value of U=2V. Our approach suggests viewing the model on this line as two weakly coupled interpenetrating systems of up-spin and down-spin electrons with strong backscattering interactions favoring charge-density waves separately in each of the subsystems. A first-order transition occurring for attractive interactions is interpreted as a characteristic instability of the Luttinger liquid towards phase separation. We finally discuss a possible equivalence to some recent studies of coupled two-dimensional XY models.

Functional renormalization group for fermions on a one dimensional lattice at arbitrary filling

Lucas Désoppi, N. Dupuis, C. Bourbonnais

A formalism based on the fermionic functional-renormalization-group approach to interacting electron models defined on a lattice is presented. One-loop flow equations for the coupling constants and susceptibilities in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels are derived in weak-coupling conditions. It is shown that lattice effects manifest themselves through the curvature of the spectrum and the dependence of the coupling constants on momenta. This method is then applied to the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model; we thoroughly discuss the evolution of the phase diagram, and in particular the fate of the bond-centered charge-density-wave phase, as the system is doped away from half-filling. Our findings are compared to the predictions of the field-theory continuum limit and available numerical results.

Phase diagram for the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model: A density-matrix renormalization group study

Masaki Tezuka, Ryotaro Arita, Hideo Aoki

Phase diagram of the Hubbard-Holstein model in the coexistence of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions has been theoretically obtained with the density-matrix renormalization group method for one-dimensional systems, where an improved warm-up (the recursive sweep) procedure has enabled us to calculate various correlation functions. We have examined the cases of (i) the systems half-filled by electrons for the full parameter space spanned by the electron-electron and electron-phonon coupling constants and the phonon frequency, (ii) non-half-filled system, and (iii) trestle lattice. For (i), we have detected a region where both the charge and on-site pairing correlations decay with power laws in real space, which suggests a metallic behavior. While pairing correlations are not dominant in (i), we have found that they become dominant as the system is doped in (ii) or as the electronic band structure is modified (with a broken electron-hole symmetry) in (iii) in certain parameter regions.

Functional Renormalization Group Analysis of the Half-Filled One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Ka-Ming Tam, Shan-Wen Tsai, David K Campbell

We study the phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at weak coupling using a novel functional renormalization group (FRG) approach. The FRG method includes in a systematic manner the effects of the scattering processes involving electrons away from the Fermi points. Our results confirm the existence of a finite region of bond charge density wave, also known as a "bond order wave" near U=2V and clarify why earlier g-ology calculations have not found this phase. We argue that this is an example in which formally irrelevant corrections change the topology of the phase diagram. Whenever marginal terms lead to an accidental symmetry, this generalized FRG method may be crucial to characterize the phase diagram accurately.

Ground State Phase Diagram of an Extended Hubbard Chain with Spin-Dependent Interaction

Er-Yin Lin, Hanqin Ding, Jun Zhang

A half-filled one-dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard model (U-V_⊥-V_∥) with on-site and nearest-neighbor spin-dependent interactions is studied analytically. The ground state phase diagram is obtained in the weak-coupling regime by performing the bosonization and renormalization group methods. The result shows that the nearest-neighbor spin-dependent attraction influences the low-energy physics of the 1D correlated electron system, and changes the topological structure of the ground state phase diagram of the U-V model.

Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: a comprehensive functional renormalization group study

Abstract Using the singular-mode functional renormalization group method, we studied the doping-dependent phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model on square lattice. At half-filling, a variety of states strongly compete, including spin-density wave, charge-density wave, phase separation, as well as d -wave and s -wave superconductivity (SC). Upon electron doping, the system exhibits a strong preference for superconducting states. At slight dopings, the spin-density wave phase is strongly suppressed, and d -wave SC region expands into positive U , V region. At moderate dopings, a region of degenerated p -wave superconductivities emerge for positive U and negative V . Our results demonstrate how doping tunes the dominant fluctuations, suppressing density waves and stabilizing unconventional superconducting states in two dimensions.
