Norm preserving stochastic field equation for an ideal Bose gas in a trap: numerical implementation and applications

Abstract

Stochastic field equations represent a powerful tool to describe the thermal state of a trapped Bose gas. Often, such approaches are confronted with the old problem of an ultraviolet catastrophe, which demands a cutoff at high energies. In [arXiv:0809.1002, Phys. B 42, 081001 (2009)] we introduce a quantum stochastic field equation, avoiding the cutoff problem through a fully quantum approach based on the Glauber-Sudarshan P-function. For a close link to actual experimental setups the theory is formulated for a fixed particle number and thus based on the canonical ensemble. In this work the derivation and the non-trivial numerical implementation of the equation is explained in detail. We present applications for finite Bose gases trapped in a variety of potentials and show results for ground state occupation numbers and their equilibrium fluctuations. Moreover, we investigate spatial coherence properties by studying correlation functions of various orders.

Stochastic field equation for the canonical ensemble of an ideal Bose gas

Sigmund Heller, Walter T. Strunz

We present a novel norm preserving stochastic evolution equation for a Bose field at finite temperature. Ensemble averages are quantum expectation values in the canonical ensemble. This numerically very stable equation suppresses high-energy fluctuations exponentially, which prevent cutoff problems from occurring. We present 3D simulations for an ideal gas in various trapping potentials and focus on ground-state occupation numbers and spatial correlation functions for a wide range of temperatures above and below the critical temperature. Although rigorously valid for non-interacting bosons only, we argue that weakly interacting Bose gases may also be amenable to this approach, in the usual mean-field approximation.

Canonical ensemble of an interacting Bose gas: Stochastic matter fields and their coherence

Sigmund Heller, Walter T. Strunz

We present a novel quantum stochastic evolution equation for a matter field describing the canonical state of a weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas. In the ideal gas limit our approach is exact. This numerically very stable equation suppresses high-energy fluctuations exponentially, which enables us to describe condensed and thermal atoms within the same formalism. We present applications to ground-state occupation and fluctuations, density profile of ground-state and thermal cloud, and ground-state number statistics. Our main aim are spatial coherence properties which we investigate through the determination of interference contrast and spatial density correlations. Parameters are taken from actual experiments.

An exact stochastic field method for the interacting Bose gas at thermal equilibrium

Iacopo Carusotto, Yvan Castin

We present a new exact method to numerically compute the thermodynamical properties of an interacting Bose gas in the canonical ensemble. As in our previous paper (Carusotto I, Castin Y and Dalibard J 2001 Phys. Rev. A 63 023606), we write the density operator ρ as an average of Hartree dyadics | N :ϕ 1 ⟩⟨ N :ϕ 2 | and we find stochastic evolution equations for the wavefunctions ϕ 1,2 such that the exact imaginary-time evolution of ρ is recovered after averaging over noise. In this way, the thermal equilibrium density operator can be obtained for any temperature T . The method is then applied to study the thermodynamical properties of a homogeneous one-dimensional N -boson system: although Bose-Einstein condensation cannot occur in the thermodynamical limit, a macroscopic occupation of the lowest mode of a finite system is observed at sufficiently low temperatures. If k B T >>µ, the main effect of interactions is to suppress density fluctuations and to reduce their correlation length. Different effects such as a spatial antibunching of the atoms are predicted for the opposite k B T ⩽µ regime. Our exact stochastic calculations have been compared with existing approximate theories.

Properties of the stochastic Gross–Pitaevskii equation: finite temperature Ehrenfest relations and the optimal plane wave representation

Ashton S. Bradley, P. B. Blakie, Crispin W. Gardiner

We present Ehrenfest relations for the high temperature stochastic Gross–Pitaevskii equation description of a trapped Bose gas, including the effect of growth noise and the energy cutoff. A condition for neglecting the cutoff terms in the Ehrenfest relations is found which is more stringent than the usual validity condition of the truncated Wigner or classical field method—that all modes are highly occupied . The condition requires a small overlap of the nonlinear interaction term with the lowest energy single particle state of the noncondensate band, and gives a means to constrain dynamical artefacts arising from the energy cutoff in numerical simulations. We apply the formalism to two simple test problems: (i) simulation of the Kohn mode oscillation for a trapped Bose gas at zero temperature, and (ii) computing the equilibrium properties of a finite temperature Bose gas within the classical field method. The examples indicate ways to control the effects of the cutoff, and that there is an optimal choice of plane wave basis for a given cutoff energy. This basis gives the best reproduction of the single particle spectrum, the condensate fraction and the position and momentum densities.

Condensation ofNbosons. III. Analytical results for all higher moments of condensate fluctuations in interacting and ideal dilute Bose gases via the canonical ensemble quasiparticle formulation

Vitaly V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Marlan O. Scully

We consider equilibrium canonical-ensemble fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap using the particle-number conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt [Phys. Rev. 113, 755 (1959)] and the concept of the canonical-ensemble quasiparticles. We find explicit expressions for the characteristic function and all cumulants of the ground-state occupation statistics both for the dilute weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases. We present analytical formulas for the moments of the ground-state occupation fluctuations in the weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases in a box (``homogeneous gas'') as well as in the ideal Bose gas in an arbitrary power-law trap, in particular, in an arbitrary harmonic trap. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling between quasiparticles on suppression of the ground-state occupation fluctuations at moderate temperatures and their enhancement at very low temperatures. We clarify a crossover between ideal-gas and weakly interacting gas statistics, which is governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism. The important conclusion is that in most cases the ground-state occupation fluctuations are anomalously large and are not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit.
