Abstract

We study a spin-1/2 system with Heisenberg plus ring exchanges on a four-leg triangular ladder using the density matrix renormalization group and Gutzwiller variational wave functions. Near an isotropic lattice regime, for moderate to large ring exchanges we find a spin Bose-metal phase with a spinon Fermi sea consisting of three partially filled bands. Going away from the triangular towards the square lattice regime, we find a staggered dimer phase with dimers in the transverse direction, while for small ring exchanges the system is in a featureless rung phase. We also discuss parent states and a possible phase diagram in two dimensions.

Spin Bose-metal phase in a spin- 12 model with ring exchange on a two-leg triangular strip

D. N. Sheng, Olexei I. Motrunich, Matthew P. A. Fisher

Recent experiments on triangular lattice organic Mott insulators have found evidence for a two-dimensional (2D) spin liquid in close proximity to the metal-insulator transition. A Gutzwiller wave function study of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model with a four-spin ring exchange term appropriate in this regime has found that the projected spinon Fermi sea state has a low variational energy. This wave function, together with a slave particle-gauge theory analysis, suggests that this putative spin liquid possesses spin correlations that are singular along surfaces in momentum space, i.e., ``Bose surfaces.'' Signatures of this state, which we will refer to as a ``spin Bose metal'' (SBM), are expected to manifest in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) ladder systems: the discrete transverse momenta cut through the 2D Bose surface leading to a distinct pattern of 1D gapless modes. Here, we search for a quasi-1D descendant of the triangular lattice SBM state by exploring the Heisenberg plus ring model on a two-leg triangular strip (zigzag chain). Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) supplemented by variational wave functions and a bosonization analysis, we map out the full phase diagram. In the absence of ring exchange the model is equivalent to the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg chain, and we find the expected Bethe-chain and dimerized phases. Remarkably, moderate ring exchange reveals a new gapless phase over a large swath of the phase diagram. Spin and dimer correlations possess singular wave vectors at particular ``Bose points'' (remnants of the 2D Bose surface) and allow us to identify this phase as the hoped for quasi-1D descendant of the triangular lattice SBM state. We use bosonization to derive a low-energy effective theory for the zigzag spin Bose metal and find three gapless modes and one Luttinger parameter controlling all power law correlations. Potential instabilities out of the zigzag SBM give rise to other interesting phases such as a period-3 valence bond solid or a period-4 chirality order, which we discover in the DMRG. Another interesting instability is into a spin Bose-metal phase with partial ferromagnetism (spin polarization of one spinon band), which we also find numerically using the DMRG.

Exact diagonalization study of the triangular Heisenberg model with four-spin ring-exchange interaction

Yu Zheng, Muwei Wu, Dao‐Xin Yao +1 more

Using Lanczos exact diagonalization (ED), we study the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model with the four-spin ring-exchange interaction ${J}_{r}$ on a triangular lattice. We mainly use the level spectroscopic technique of two 36-site tori to investigate the ground-state phase diagram, and further characterize phases by spin, dimer, and chiral correlation functions. The ground state has rich phases including several magnetic-ordered phases like the zigzag phase and tetrahedral phase, as well as several novel nonmagnetic phases, some of which exhibit valence bond solid behavior in their dimer correlation functions. However, we do not find direct evidence of a quantum spin liquid phase with spinon Fermi surface in this model. Our results can give a better understanding of the ground-state properties of the triangular Heisenberg model with ring-exchange interaction and help to understand the relevant triangular materials.

Phase diagram of a spin ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Guido Schmid, Matthias Troyer

We present the phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the two leg ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange, determined by a combination of exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques. We find six different phases and regimes: the rung singlet phase, a ferromagnetic phase, two symmetry broken phases with staggered dimers and staggered scalar chiralities, and a gapped region with dominant vector chirality, or collinear spin correlations. We localize the phase transitions and investigate their nature.

Exotic paired phases in ladders with spin-dependent hopping

Adrian E. Feiguin, Matthew P. A. Fisher

Fermions in two dimensions, when subject to anisotropic spin-dependent hopping, can potentially give rise to unusual paired states in unpolarized mixtures that can behave as non-Fermi liquids. One possibility is a fully paired state with a gap for fermion excitations in which the Cooper pairs remain uncondensed. Such a ``Cooper-pair Bose-metal'' phase would be expected to have a singular Bose surface in momentum space. As demonstrated in the context of two-dimensional bosons hopping with a frustrating ring-exchange interaction, an analogous Bose-metal phase has a set of quasi-one-dimensional descendant states when put on a ladder geometry. Here we present a density matrix renormalization group study of the attractive Hubbard model with spin-dependent hopping on a two-leg ladder geometry. In our setup, one spin species moves preferentially along the leg direction, while the other does so along the rung direction. We find compelling evidence for the existence of a novel Cooper-pair Bose-metal phase in a region of the phase diagram at intermediate coupling. We further explore the phase diagram of this model as a function of hopping anisotropy, density, and interaction strength, finding a conventional superfluid phase as well as a phase of paired Cooper pairs with $d$-wave symmetry, similar to the one found in models of hard-core bosons with ring exchange. We argue that simulating this model with cold Fermi gases on spin-dependent optical lattices is a promising direction for realizing exotic quantum states.

Efficient matrix-product-state preparation of highly entangled trial states: Weak Mott insulators on the triangular lattice revisited

Amir M-Aghaei, Bela Bauer, Kirill Shtengel +1 more

Using tensor network states to unravel the physics of quantum spin liquids in minimal, yet generic microscopic spin or electronic models remains notoriously challenging. A prominent open question concerns the nature of the insulating ground state of two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard-type models on the triangular lattice in the vicinity of the Mott metal-insulator transition, a regime which can be approximated microscopically by a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model supplemented with additional "ring-exchange" interactions. Using a novel and efficient state preparation technique whereby we initialize full density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations with highly entangled Gutzwiller-projected Fermi surface trial wave functions, we show -- contrary to previous works -- that the simplest triangular lattice $J$-$K$ spin model with four-site ring exchange likely does not harbor a fully gapless U(1) spinon Fermi surface (spin Bose metal) phase on four- and six-leg wide ladders. Our methodology paves the way to fully resolve with DMRG other controversial problems in the fields of frustrated quantum magnetism and strongly correlated electrons.

Ground-state phase diagram of the dimerized spin-1/2 two-leg ladder*

Cong Fu, Hui Zhao, Yuguang Chen +1 more

Dimerized spin-1/2 ladders exhibit a variety of phase structures, which depend on the intra-chain and inter-chain spin exchange energies as well as on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, we study critical properties of the bond-alternating two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder with diagonal interaction J ×. Two types of spin systems, staggered dimerized antiferromagnetic ladder and columnar dimerized ferro-antiferromagnetic couplings ladder, are investigated. To clarify the phase transition behaviors, we simultaneously analyze the string order parameter (SOP), the twisted order parameter (TOP), as well as a measurement of the quantum information analysis. Based on measuring this different observables, we establish the phase diagram accurately and give the fitting functions of the phase boundaries. In addition, the phase transition of cross-coupled spin ladder (in the absence of intrinsic dimerization) is also discussed.
