Abstract

We study the ground state of a finite-size ensemble of interacting qubits driven by a quantum field. We find a maximally entangled $W$ state in the ensemble part of the system for a certain region of the coupling parameters. The area of this region decreases as the ensemble size increases and, in the classical limit, becomes the line in parameter space that defines the phase transition of the system. In the classical limit, we also study the dynamics of the system and its transition from order to disorder for initial energies close to the ground-state energy. We find that a critical energy providing this transition is related to the minimum of the projection of the total angular momentum of the quantum system in the $z$ direction.

Entanglement in the ground state of interacting qubits driven by a quantum field

B. M. Rodríguez-Lara, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We study the ground state entanglement properties of a finite size ensemble of interacting qubits driven by a quantized field. In the absence of driving, the system reduces to a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model that presents maximal entanglement at the first of a series of quantum phase transitions; i.e. a W-state of the qubit ensemble. We present exact and numerical solutions, within and without the rotating wave approximation, in that order, showing that a large finite probability of having the maximal entangled state in the ground state is preserved in the driven system.

Quantum phase transition of nonlinear light in the finite size Dicke Hamiltonian

B. M. Rodríguez-Lara, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We study the quantum phase transition of an N two-level system ensemble interacting with an optical degenerate parametric process, which can be described by the finite size Dicke Hamiltonian plus counter-rotating and quadratic field terms. Analytical closed forms of the critical coupling value and their corresponding separable ground states are derived in the weak and strong coupling regimes. The existence of bipartite entanglement between the two-level system ensemble and photon field as well as between ensemble components for moderate coupling is shown through numerical analysis. Given a finite size, our results also indicate the co-existence of squeezed fields and squeezed atomic ensembles.

Dicke model: Entanglement as a finite size effect

Oleksandr Tsyplyatyev, Daniel Loss

We analyze the Dicke model at zero temperature by matrix diagonalization to determine the entanglement in the ground state. In the infinite system limit the mean field approximation predicts a quantum phase transition from a non-interacting state to a Bose-Einstein condensate at a threshold coupling. We show that in a finite system the spin part of the ground state is a bipartite entangled state, which can be tested by probing two parts of the spin system separately, but only in a narrow regime around the threshold coupling. Around the resonance, the size of this regime is inversely proportional to the number of spins and shrinks down to zero for infinite systems. This spin entanglement is a non-perturbative effect and is also missed by the mean-field approximation.

Quantum Criticality in the Biased Dicke Model

Han‐Jie Zhu, Guo‐Feng Zhang, Heng Fan

The biased Dicke model describes a system of biased two-level atoms coupled to a bosonic field, and is expected to produce new phenomena that are not present in the original Dicke model. In this paper, we study the critical properties of the biased Dicke model in the classical oscillator limits. For the finite-biased case in this limit, We present analytical results demonstrating that the excitation energy does not vanish for arbitrary coupling. This indicates that the second order phase transition is avoided in the biased Dicke model, which contrasts to the original Dicke model. We also analyze the squeezing and the entanglement in the ground state, and find that a finite bias will strongly modify their behaviors in the vicinity of the critical coupling point.

Quantum phase transitions in systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom

Michal Kloc

In the thesis we investigate and classify critical phenomena in the extended Dicke model (EDM) which describes the interaction between two-level atoms and a single-mode bosonic field (schematic model for cavity quantum electrodynamics). The model belongs to the class of so-called finite models, which keep the number of degrees of freedom f constant independently on the size of the system N . The important property of these systems is that the thermodynamic limit N → ∞ coincides with the classical limit ħ → 0. This allows us to study various quantum critical phenomena, in particular the ground-state quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and the excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs), by means of semiclassical methods. Using the semiclassical approach we identify and classify the QPTs and ESQPTs in various settings of the EDM and make a link to thermal phase transitions. We study the entanglement properties of both the ground state and the excited states as a function of the atom-field interaction strength. In the integrable version of the EDM we make a link between the ESQPT and monodromy, and discuss its effect on classical dynamics. The fate of monodromy under a non-integrable perturbation is observed. The dynamical consequences of the ESQPTs are examined using quantum quenches. The influence of the...

Scaling of Berry's phase close to the Dicke quantum phase transition

Francesco Plastina, G Liberti, Angelo C. M. Carollo

We discuss the thermodynamic and finite-size scaling properties of the geometric phase in the adiabatic Dicke model, describing a quantum phase transition for an N qubit register coupled to a slow oscillator mode. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, a non-zero Berry phase is obtained only if a path in parameter space is followed that encircles the critical point. Furthermore, we investigate the precursors of this critical behavior for a system with finite size and obtain the leading orders in the 1/ N expansion of the Berry phase and its critical exponent.
