Abstract

One-electron $3+1$ and $2+1$ Dirac equations are used to calculate the motion of a relativistic electron in a vacuum in the presence of an external magnetic field. First, calculations are carried on an operator level and exact analytical results are obtained for the electron trajectories which contain both intraband frequency components, identified as the cyclotron motion, as well as interband frequency components, identified as the trembling motion, Zitterbewegung (ZB). Next, time-dependent Heisenberg operators are used for the same problem to compute average values of electron position and velocity employing Gaussian wave packets. It is shown that the presence of a magnetic field and the resulting quantization of the energy spectrum has pronounced effects on the electron ZB: it introduces intraband frequency components into the motion, influences all the frequencies, and makes the motion stationary (not decaying in time) in case of the $2+1$ Dirac equation. Finally, simulations of the $2+1$ Dirac equation and the resulting electron ZB in the presence of a magnetic field are proposed and described employing trapped ions and laser excitations. Using simulation parameters achieved in recent experiments of Gerritsma and coworkers, we show that the effects of the simulated magnetic field on ZB are considerable and can certainly be observed.

Trembling motion of relativistic electrons in a magnetic field

Tomasz M. Rusin, Wlodek Zawadzki

Zitterbewegung (ZB, the trembling motion) of free relativistic electrons in a vacuum in the presence of an external magnetic field is calculated. It is shown that the motion of an electron wave packet has intraband frequency components, corresponding to the classical cyclotron motion, and several interband frequency components corresponding to the Zitterbewegung. For a two-dimensional situation, the presence of a magnetic field makes the ZB motion stationary, i.e. not decaying in time. We show how to simulate the ZB in a magnetic field using trapped ions and laser excitations in the spirit of recently observed proof-of-principle ZB simulation by Gerritsma {\it et al.} Nature {\bf 463}, 68 (2010). It is demonstrated that, for the parameters of the Dirac equation simulated by the above experiment, the effect of a magnetic field on the Zitterbewegung is considerable.

Zitterbewegungof Klein-Gordon particles and its simulation by classical systems

Tomasz M. Rusin, Wlodek Zawadzki

The Klein-Gordon equation is used to calculate the Zitterbewegung (ZB, trembling motion) of spin-zero particles in the absence of fields and in the presence of an external magnetic field. Both Hamiltonian and wave formalisms are employed to describe ZB and their results are compared. It is demonstrated that if one uses wave packets to represent particles, then the ZB motion has a decaying behavior. It is also shown that the trembling motion is caused by an interference of two subpackets composed of positive- and negative-energy states, which propagate with different velocities. In the presence of a magnetic field, the quantization of the energy spectrum results in many interband frequencies contributing to ZB oscillations and the motion follows a collapse-revival pattern. In the limit of nonrelativistic velocities, the interband ZB components vanish and the motion is reduced to cyclotron oscillations. The exact dynamics of a charged Klein-Gordon (KG) particle in the presence of a magnetic field is described on an operator level. The trembling motion of a KG particle in the absence of fields is simulated using a classical model proposed by Morse and Feshbach---it is shown that a variance of a Gaussian wave packet exhibits ZB oscillations.

Parity-relevant zitterbewegung and quantum simulation by a single trapped ion

Kunling Wang, Tao Liu, Mang Feng +2 more

Zitterbewegung (ZB), the trembling of free relativistic electrons in a vacuum, could be simulated by a single trapped ion. We focus on the variations of ZB under different parity conditions and find no ZB in the case of odd or even parity. ZB occurs only for the admixture of the odd- and even-parity states. We also show that a similar role is played by the parity operator for the trapped ion in Fock-state representation and the space-inversion operator for a realistic relativistic electron. Although the ZB effect is invisible in a relativistic electron, preparation of the trapped ion in different parity states is a sophisticated job, which makes it possible to observe the parity-relevant ZB effects with currently available techniques.

Exact Solutions of the Heisenberg Equations and Zitterbewegung of the Electron in a Constant Uniform Magnetic Field

A. O. Barut, Anthony J. Bracken

For a free Dirac electron, the Heisenberg equations define an internal dynamical system in the rest frame, isomorphic to a finite three-dimensional oscillator with a compact SO(5) phase space, such that the spin of the electron is the orbital angular momentum of the internal dynamics (Barut and Bracken 1980, 1981a). In the present work, the change in this internal dynamics due to an external magnetic field is studied. In order that the internal motion can be distinguished from the centre of mass motion, the solutions of the corresponding Hamilton and Heisenberg equations for the relativistic classical motion and the relativistic quantum mechanical spinless motion are also presented. The solutions for the electron exhibit the effect of the spin terms both in the internal motion and external motion, and we are able to identify the properties of the Zitterbewegung in the external field.

Oscillatory multiband dynamics of free particles: The ubiquity ofzitterbewegungeffects

R. Winkler, Ulrich Zülicke, Jens Bolte

In the Dirac theory for the motion of free relativistic electrons, highly oscillatory components appear in the time evolution of physical observables such as position, velocity, and spin angular momentum. This effect is known as zitterbewegung. We present a theoretical analysis of rather different Hamiltonians with gapped and/or spin-split energy spectrum (including the Rashba, Luttinger, and Kane Hamiltonians) that exhibit analogs of zitterbewegung as a common feature. We find that the amplitude of oscillations of the Heisenberg velocity operator $\mathbf{v}(t)$ generally equals the uncertainty for a simultaneous measurement of two linearly independent components of $\mathbf{v}$. It is also shown that many features of zitterbewegung are shared by the simple and well-known Landau Hamiltonian, describing the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) electron systems in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Finally, we also discuss the oscillatory dynamics of 2D electrons arising from the interplay of Rashba spin splitting and a perpendicular magnetic field.

Quantum simulation of ‘zitterbewegung' in a single trapped ion under conditions of parity-keeping and parity-breaking

Liu Ta

The motional trembling(‘zitterbewegung’)of a relativistic electron governed by Dirac equation was originally predicted by Schr¨odinger in the early days of quantum mechanics and simulated in a recent experiment with a single trapped ultracold ion.We investigate stable and instable confinements of a single trapped ion in a Paul trap under different conditions relevant to parity.Since our treatment involves neither restriction of Lamb-Dicke limit nor rotating-wave approximation,we may demonstrate different quantum dynamics of the single trapped ion in a wide range of the trapping parameters. We discuss the origin of the zitterbewegung which is relevant to the stability of the ion trapping.
