Abstract

We study the decay of multiple quantum (MQ) NMR coherences in systems with the large number of equivalent spins. As being created on the preparation period of the MQ NMR experiment, they decay due to the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) on the evolution period of this experiment. It is shown that the relaxation time decreases with the increase in MQ coherence order (according to the known results) and in the number of spins. We also consider the modified preparation period of the MQ NMR experiment [G. A. Alvarez and D. Suter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 230403 (2010)] concatenating the short evolution periods under the secular DDI Hamiltonian (the perturbation) with the evolution period under the nonsecular averaged two-spin/two-quantum Hamiltonian. The influence of the perturbation on the decoherence rate is investigated for the systems consisting of 200-600 equivalent spins.

The stabilization of width of multiple-quantum NMR spectrum induced by decoherence

A. A. Lundin, V. E. Zobov

As opposed to traditional methods of multiple-quantum NMR spectroscopy authors of the article [G.A. Alvarez, D. Suter, Phys. Rev. A 84, 012320 (2011)] generated the effective double-quantum Hamiltonian, with the slight adding usual secular dipole-dipole Hamiltonian to the first one at the stage of the correlations preparing (so the perturbation appeared). At this framework the width of MQ spectra reveals tending to any constant amount with the growing up of the time. Also there were shown that the spectral width decreases with increasing perturbation strength. The growing up of the cluster size as it was supposed by G.A. Alvarez and D. Suter was restricted by mentioned perturbation. We are assuming an alternative explanation. The growing up of cluster size still goes on but the width of MQ spectrum becomes stable because of different decay rate of MQ-spectral components in dependence on theirs location in spectrum. Here we are calculating the widths of MQ spectra in dependence on the time of "preparation" for different values of the perturbation strength and by this way we get the dependence of stabilized amount of MQ-spectrum width on mentioned strength. So, the excellent compliance obtains with the analogues experimental relation observed in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A 84, 012320 (2011)].

Multiple quantum NMR dynamics in dipolar ordered spin systems

Serge I. Doronin, Edward B. Fel’dman, E. I. Kuznetsova +2 more

We investigate analytically and numerically the multiple-quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in systems of nuclear spins $1∕2$ coupled by the dipole-dipole interactions in the case of the dipolar ordered initial state. We suggest two different methods of MQ NMR. One of them is based on the measurement of the dipolar temperature in the quasiequilibrium state which is established after the time of order ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathit{loc}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ (${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathit{loc}}$ is the dipolar local field) after the MQ NMR experiment. The other method uses an additional resonance ${(\ensuremath{\pi}∕4)}_{y}$ pulse after the preparation period of the standard MQ NMR experiment in solids. Many-spin clusters and correlations are created faster in such experiments than in the usual MQ NMR experiments and can be used for the investigation of many-spin dynamics of nuclear spins in solids.

Multiple-Quantum NMR Spectroscopy and Quantum Information Spreading Control in the Spin Systems of Solids

V. E. Zobov, A. A. Lundin

Multiple-quantum (MQ) solid-state NMR spectroscopy allows the growth of multiple-spin correlations and, thus, the spreading of quantum information in the object under study to be observed. Recently, in [11] it was proposed to control this process through a controlled perturbation added to the effective Hamiltonian that causes degradation of correlated spin clusters with a rate determined by the number of spins K in a cluster. However, this perturbation can also lead to degradation whose rate is determined by the coherence order M. In this paper, to investigate the influence of a small added perturbation, we used an expansion into orthogonal operators that allowed the cluster size distribution to be taken into account. In our calculations we realized a simple model with known amplitudes of the expansion into a complete set of orthogonal operators in the absence of a perturbation. We performed numerical calculations of the “preparation time” dependences of the MQ spectra, their second moments, and the coherence orders at which the MQ spectra decrease by a factor of e as well as the average correlated spin cluster sizes $$\bar {K}$$ . The coherence-order-dependent contribution to the degradation is shown to change the shape of the MQ spectrum. In particular, as the preparation time increases, the MQ spectrum can be stabilized, while the growth of $$\bar {K}$$ is retained. Due to the change in the shape of the MQ spectrum, the relations of its characteristics to the number $$\bar {K}$$ change compared to those for the Gaussian function (traditionally used to process the experiments). These changes should be taken into account when studying the spreading of quantum information through MQ spectroscopy.

Multiple quantum NMR dynamics of spin-12 carrying molecules of a gas in nanopores

S. I. Doronin, A. V. Fedorova, Edward B. Fel’dman +1 more

We consider the multiple quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics of a gas of spin carrying molecules in nanocavities. MQ NMR dynamics is determined by the residual dipole-dipole interactions, which are not averaged completely due to the molecular diffusion in nanopores. Since the averaged nonsecular Hamiltonian describing MQ NMR dynamics depends on only one coupling constant, this Hamiltonian commutes with the square of the total spin angular momentum Î2. We use the basis of common eigenstates of Î2 and the projection of I on the external magnetic field for investigation of MQ NMR dynamics. This approach allows us to study MQ NMR dynamics in systems consisting of several hundreds of spins. The analytical approximation of the stationary profile of MQ coherences is obtained. The analytical expressions for MQ NMR coherence intensities of the five-spin system in a nanopore are found. Numerical investigations allow us to find the dependencies of intensities of MQ coherences on their orders (the profiles of MQ coherences) in systems consisting of 600 spins and even more. It is shown that the stationary MQ coherence profile in the considered system is an exponential one.

The multiple quantum NMR dynamics in systems of equivalent spins with a dipolar ordered initial state

S. I. Doronin, Edward B. Fel’dman, A. I. Zenchuk

The multiple quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in the system of equivalent spins with the dipolar ordered initial state is considered. The high symmetry of the Hamiltonian responsible for the MQ NMR dynamics (the MQ Hamiltonian) is used to develop analytic and numerical methods for the investigation of the MQ NMR dynamics in systems consisting of hundreds of spins from the “first principles.” We obtain the dependence of the intensities of the MQ NMR coherences on their orders (profiles of the MQ NMR coherences) for systems of 200–600 spins. It is shown that these profiles may be well approximated by exponential distribution functions. We also compare the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems of equivalent spins having two different initial states, the dipolar ordered state and the thermal equilibrium state in a strong external magnetic field.

Dynamics of entangled states of nuclear spins in solids

Serge I. Doronin

We investigated dynamics of entangled states on the basis of multiple-quantum (MQ) NMR methods. A time evolution of MQ coherences of nuclear spins coupled by the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) in solids is simply connected with dynamics of quantum entangled states. We studied analytically dynamics of the entangled states for two- and three-spin systems. In this case dynamics of the quantum entanglement is uniquely determined by the time evolution of MQ coherences of the second order. The real part of the density matrix describing MQ dynamics in solids is responsible for MQ coherences of the zeroth order while its imaginary part is responsible for the second order. Thus, one can conclude that dynamics of the entanglement is connected with transitions from the real part of the density matrix to the imaginary one and vice versa.
