Isotropic contact forces in arbitrary representation: Heterogeneous few-body problems and low dimensions

Abstract

The Bethe-Peierls asymptotic approach which models pairwise short-range forces by contact conditions is introduced in arbitrary representation for spatial dimensions less than or equal to 3. The formalism is applied in various situations and emphasis is put on the momentum representation. In the presence of a transverse harmonic confinement, dimensional reduction toward two-dimensional (2D) or one-dimensional (1D) physics is derived within this formalism. The energy theorem relating the mean energy of an interacting system to the asymptotic behavior of the one-particle density matrix illustrates the method in its second quantized form. Integral equations that encapsulate the Bethe-Peierls contact condition for few-body systems are derived. In three dimensions, for three-body systems supporting Efimov states, a nodal condition is introduced in order to obtain universal results from the Skorniakov--Ter-Martirosian equation and the Thomas collapse is avoided. Four-body bound state eigenequations are derived and the 2D ${}^{\ensuremath{'}}3+{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ bosonic ground state is computed as a function of the mass ratio.

Two- and three- dimensional few-body systems in the universal regime

F. F. Bellotti

Macro properties of cold atomic gases are driven by few-body correlations, even if the gas has thousands of particles. Quantum systems composed of two and three particles with attractive zero\=/range pairwise interactions are considered for general masses and interaction strengths in two and three dimensions (2D and 3D). The Faddeev decomposition is used to derive the equations for the bound state, which is the starting point for the investigation of universal properties of few\=/body systems, i.e. those that all potentials with the same physics at low energy are able to describe in a model\=/independent form. In 2D, the number of bound states in a three\=/body system increases without bound as the mass of one particle becomes much lighter than the other two. The analytic form of an effective potential between the heavy particles explains the mass\=/dependence on the number of bound energy levels. An exact analytic expression for the large\=/momentum asymptotic behaviour of the spectator function in the Faddeev equation is presented. The spectator function and its asymptotic form define the two- and three\=/body contact parameters. The two\=/body parameter is found to be independent of the quantum state in some specific 2D systems. The 2D and 3D momentum distributions have a distinct sub\=/leading form whereas the 3D term depends on the mass of the particles. A model that interpolates between 2D and 3D is proposed and a sharp transition in the energy spectrum of three-body systems is found.

Universal low-energy properties of three two-dimensional bosons

O. I. Kartavtsev, A. V. Malykh

Universal low-energy properties are studied for three identical bosons confined in two dimensions. The short-range pairwise interaction in the low-energy limit is described by means of the boundary condition model. The wave function is expanded in a set of eigenfunctions on the hypersphere, and the system of hyperradial equations is used to obtain analytical and numerical results. Within the framework of this method, exact analytical expressions are derived for the eigenpotentials and the coupling terms of hyperradial equations. The derivation of the coupling terms is generally applicable to a variety of three-body problems provided the interaction is described by the boundary condition model. The asymptotic form of the total wave function at a small and a large hyperradius $\ensuremath{\rho}$ is studied, and the universal logarithmic dependence $\ensuremath{\sim}{\mathrm{ln}}^{3}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rho}$ in the vicinity of the triple-collision point is derived. Precise three-body binding energies and the $(2+1)$-scattering length are calculated.

D -dimensional three-body bound-state problem with zero-range interactions

D. S. Rosa, T. Frederico, Gastão I. Krein +1 more

We solved analytically the three-body mass-imbalanced problem embedded in $D$ dimensions for zero-range resonantly interacting particles. We derived the negative energy eigenstates of the three-body Schr\"odinger equation by imposing the Bethe-Peierls boundary conditions in $D$ dimensions for zero-energy two-body bound states. The solution retrieves the Efimov-like discrete scaling factor dependence with dimension. The analytical form of the mass-imbalanced three-body bound-state wave function can be used to probe the effective dimension of asymmetric cold atomic traps for Feshbach resonances tuned close to the Efimov limit.

Contact parameters in two dimensions for general three-body systems

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

We study the two-dimensional three-body problem in the general case of three distinguishable particles interacting through zero-range potentials. The Faddeev decomposition is used to write the momentum-space wave function. We show that the large-momentum asymptotic spectator function has the same functional form as derived previously for three identical particles. We derive the analytic relations between the three different Faddeev components for the three distinguishable particles. We investigate the one-body momentum distributions both analytically and numerically and analyze the tail of the distributions to obtain two- and three-body contact parameters. We specialize from the general cases to the examples of two identical, interacting or non-interacting, particles. We find that the two-body contact parameter is not a universal constant in the general case and show that the universality is recovered when a subsystem is composed of two identical non-interacting particles. We also show that the three-body contact parameter is negligible in the case of one non-interacting subsystem compared to the situation where all the subsystems are bound. As an example, we present the results for mixtures of lithium with two cesium or two potassium atoms, which are systems of current experimental interest.

Scaling and universality in two dimensions: three-body bound states with short-ranged interactions

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

The momentum space zero-range model is used to investigate universal properties of three interacting particles confined to two dimensions. The pertinent equations are first formulated for a system of two identical and one distinct particle and the two different two-body subsystems are characterized by two-body energies and masses. The three-body energy in units of one of the two-body energies is a universal function of the other two-body energy and the mass ratio. We derive convenient analytical formulae for calculations of the three-body energy as a function of these two independent parameters and exhibit the results as universal curves. In particular, we show that the three-body system can have any number of stable bound states. When the mass ratio of the distinct to identical particles is greater than 0.22, we find that at most two stable bound states exist, while for two heavy and one light mass an increasing number of bound states is possible. The specific number of stable bound states depends on the ratio of two-body bound state energies and on the mass ratio, and we map out an energy–mass phase diagram of the number of stable bound states. Realizable systems of both fermions and bosons are discussed in this framework.

On the renormalization of contact interactions for the configuration-interaction method in two-dimensions

Massimo Rontani, G Eriksson, S Åberg +1 more

Abstract The configuration interaction (CI) method for calculating the exact eigenstates of a quantum-mechanical few-body system is problematic when applied to particles interacting through contact forces. In dimensions higher than one the approach fails due to the pathology of the Dirac δ -potential, making it impossible to reach convergence by gradually increasing the size of the Hilbert space. However, this problem may be cured in a rather simple manner by renormalizing the strength of the contact potential when diagonalizing in a truncated Hilbert space. One hereby relies on the comparison of the CI results to the two-body ground-state energy obtained by the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for a regularized contact interaction. We discuss here a scheme that provides cutoff-independent few-body physical observables. The method is applied to a few-body system of ultracold atoms confined by a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator.
