Tunneling of polarized fermions in 3D double wells

Abstract

We study the tunneling of a spin polarized Fermi gas in a three-dimensional double well potential, focusing on the time dynamics starting from an initial state in which there is an imbalance in the number of particles in the two wells. Although fermions in different doublets of the double well tunnel with different frequencies, we point out that (incoherent) oscillations of a large number of particles can arise, as a consequence of the presence of transverse degrees of freedom. Estimates of the doublet structure and of the occupation of transverse eigenstates for a realistic experimental setup are provided.

Um modelo esquemático e um modelo realistico para tunelamento coerente em poco duplo

Gabriela Barreto Lemos

We present two examples of tunneling in double well potentials. Therst is a study of the localization in a dissipative one-particle system bymeans of an analogy with a spin-1/2 system in a uniform magnetic eld.The second example is an investigation of the tunneling process of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a double well potential from the point of view ofa many body Hamiltonian. Although the two-mode model for the processis not realistic for large enough number of particles (N 200), for certaininitial conditions, it points out a completely dierent explanation for thenon-observation of tunneling from that given in Michael Albiez et al, Phys.Rev. Lett. 95, 010402 (2005). We observe a \phase transition" related to spectral properties of the Hamiltonian and the initial conditions which, for large enough initial population imbalance, presents occupation probabilitiesconcentrated in doublets.

Quantum-tunneling dynamics of a spin-polarized Fermi gas in a double-well potential

Luca Salasnich, G. Mazzarella, Mario Salerno +1 more

We study the exact dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-polarized gas of fermions in a double-well potential at zero and finite temperature. Despite the system being made of noninteracting fermions, its dynamics can be quite complex, showing strongly aperiodic spatio-temporal patterns during the tunneling. The extension of these results to the case of mixtures of spin-polarized fermions interacting with self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at zero temperature is considered as well. In this case we show that the fermionic dynamics remains qualitatively similar to that observed in the absence of BEC but with the Rabi frequencies of fermionic excited states explicitly depending on the number of bosons and on the boson-fermion interaction strength. From this, the possibility of controlling quantum fermionic dynamics by means of Feshbach resonances is suggested.

Vortex macroscopic superpositions in ultracold bosons in a double-well potential

Miguel Ángel García-March, Lincoln D. Carr

We study macroscopic superpositions in the orbital rather than the spatial degrees of freedom, in a three-dimensional, double-well system. We show that the ensuing dynamics of $N$ interacting excited ultracold bosons, which, in general, requires at least eight single-particle modes and $(\genfrac{}{}{0pt}{}{N+7}{N})$ Fock vectors, is described by a surprisingly small set of many-body states. An initial state with half the atoms in each well, and purposely excited in one of them, gives rise to the tunneling of axisymmetric and transverse vortex structures. We show that transverse vortices tunnel orders of magnitude faster than axisymmetric ones and are therefore more experimentally accessible. The tunneling process generates macroscopic superpositions only distinguishable by their orbital properties and within experimentally realistic times.

Few-Boson Dynamics in Double Wells: From Single-Atom to Correlated Pair Tunneling

Sascha Zöllner, Hans‐Dieter Meyer, Peter Schmelcher

We investigate few-boson tunneling in a one-dimensional double well, covering the full crossover from weak interactions to the fermionization limit of strong correlations. Based on exact quantum-dynamical calculations, it is found that the tunneling dynamics of two atoms evolves from Rabi oscillations to correlated pair tunneling as we increase the interaction strength. Near the fermionization limit, fragmented-pair tunneling is observed and analyzed in terms of the population imbalance and two-body correlations. For more atoms, the tunneling dynamics near fermionization is shown to be sensitive to both atom number and initial configuration.

Tunneling dynamics and phase transition of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a double well

Qi Peng-Tang, Wen‐Shan Duan

The coherent nonlinear tunneling dynamics of a boson-fermion mixture in a double-well potential is studied in this paper. Four types of phase are found for the mixture. The first one is two species localizing in different potential wells. The second one is two species coexisting in the same well. The third one is two species equally populated in two wells. The fourth one is one species equally populated in two wells while the other species is in one well. The phase transitions among these four states have been investigated. The interspecies and intraspecies interactions as well as bosonic and fermionic numbers can dramatically affect these phase transitions.

Interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a mixture of Bose-Fermi superfluid

Hong-Ping Xu, Zhen-Zhen He, Zi-Fa Yu +1 more

In this paper, we study the interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, where a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with weak repulsive interaction is confined in a symmetric deep double-well potential and an equally populated two-component Fermi gas in a harmonic potential symmetrically is positioned in the center of the double-well potential. The tunneling between the two wells is modulated by fermions trapped in a harmonic potential. When the temperature is adequately low and the bosonic particle number is adequately large, we can employ the mean-field theory to describe the evolution of the BEC in the double-well potential through the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For the Fermi gas in the harmonic potential trap, we consider the case where the inter-fermion interaction is tuned on the deep Bose-Einstein condensate of the inter-fermion Feshbach resonance, where two fermions of spin-up and spin-down form a two-body bound state. Within the regime, the Fermi gas is well described by a condensate of these fermionic dimers, and hence can be simulated as well by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation of dimers. The inter-species interactions couple the dynamics of the two species, which results in interesting features in the tunneling oscillations. The dynamic equations of the BEC in the double-well potential is described by a two-mode approximation. Coupling it with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation of the harmonically potential trapped molecular BEC, we numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of the Boson-Fermi hybrid system under different initial conditions. It is found that the interaction among fermions in a harmonic potential leads to strong non-linearity in the oscillations of the bosons in the double-well potential and enriches the tunneling dynamics of the bosons. Especially, it strengthens macroscopic quantum self-trapping. And the macroscopic quantum self-trapping can be expressed in three forms: the phase tends to be negative and monotonically decreases with time, the phase evolves with time, and the phase tends to be positive and increases monotonically with time. This means that it is possible the tunneling dynamics of the BEC in double-well potential is adjustable. Our results can be verified experimentally in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture by varying different interaction parameters via Feshbach resonance and confinement-induced resonance.
