Abstract

We study the geometrical entanglement of the $XXZ$ chain in its critical regime. Recent numerical simulations [Q.-Q. Shi, R. Or\'us, J. O. Fj\ae{}restad, and H.-Q. Zhou, New J. Phys. 12, 025008 (2010)] indicate that it scales linearly with system size, and that the first subleading correction is constant, which was argued to be possibly universal. In this work, we confirm the universality of this number, by relating it to the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a Neumann boundary condition for a free compactified field. We find that the subleading constant is a simple function of the compactification radius, in agreement with the numerics. As a further check, we compute it exactly on the lattice at the $XX$ point. We also discuss the case of the Ising chain in transverse field and show that the geometrical entanglement is related to the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy associated to a ferromagnetic boundary condition.

Universality of finite-size corrections to geometrical entanglement in one-dimensional quantum critical systems

Xijing Liu, Bing-Quan Hu, Sam Young Cho +2 more

Recently, the finite-size corrections to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site in the spin-1/2 chain have been numerically shown to scale inversely with system size, and its prefactor b has been suggested to be possibly universal [Q-Q. Shi et al., New J. Phys. 12, 025008 (2010)]. As possible evidence of its universality, the numerical values of the prefactors have been confirmed analytically by using the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy with a Neumann boundary condition for a free compactified field [J-M. Stephan et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 180406(R) (2010)]. However, the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy is not unique and does depend on conformally invariant boundary conditions. Here, we show that a unique Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a finitesize correction to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site exists and show that the ratio of the prefactor b to the corresponding minimum groundstate degeneracy gmin for the Affleck- Ludwig boundary entropy is a constant for any critical region of the spin-1 XXZ system with the single-ion anisotropy, i.e., b/(2 log2 g min ) = −1. Previously studied spin-1/2 systems, including the quantum three-state Potts model, have verified the universal ratio. Hence, the inverse finite-size correction to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site and its prefactor b are universal for one-dimensional critical systems.

Geometric entanglement from matrix product state representations

Bing-Quan Hu, Xi-Jing Liu, Jin-Hua Liu +1 more

An efficient scheme for computing the geometric entanglement (GE) per lattice site for quantum many-body systems on a periodic finite-size chain is proposed in the context of a tensor network algorithm based on matrix product state representations. It has been systematically tested for three prototypical critical quantum spin chains, which belong to the same Ising universality class. The simulation results lend strong support to the previous claim (Shi et al 2010 New J. Phys. 12 025008; Stéphan et al 2010 Phys. Rev. B 82 180406R) that the leading finite-size correction to the GE per lattice site is universal, with its remarkable connection to the celebrated Affleck–Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a conformally invariant boundary condition.

Finite-size scaling of the entanglement entropy of the quantum Ising chain with homogeneous, periodically modulated and random couplings

Ferenc Iglói, Yu-Cheng Lin

Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effective critical point in the finite sample. On the basis of homogeneous chains, we demonstrate that the scaling behavior of the entropy near the quantum phase transition is in agreement with the universality hypothesis, and calculate the shift of the effective critical point, which has different scaling behaviors for open and for periodic boundary conditions.

Finite-size scaling of half-chain entanglement entropy in the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model and the X X model

Haopeng Tian, Tianhao He, Xintian Wu

The half-chain entanglement entropy (EE) of the one-dimensional $XX$ (isotropic $XY$) chain and quantum Ising chain (QIC) at the critical point are calculated numerically for large lattices. The periodic, free-free, fixed-fixed ($++$) and ($+\ensuremath{-}$), and fixed-free boundary conditions (BCs) are studied. The models are transformed into a fermion system with a Jordan-Wigner transformation. The correlation functions of these fermions are obtained numerically. With the correlation functions, the entanglement entropy is obtained. The numerical calculation is performed with quadruple precision. The numerical results agree with the exact relationship with an accuracy of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}28}$ between the EEs of the $XX$ chain and QICs: (1) the EE of the $XX$ chain with periodic BCs is the sum of two QICs with periodic BCs; (2) the EE of the $XX$ chain with free-free BCs is the sum of two QICs with free-free BCs; (3) the EE of the $XX$ chain with fixed-free BCs is the sum of the EE of a QIC with fixed-free BCs and that with free-free BCs; (4) the EE of the $XX$ chain with fixed-fixed ($++$) BCs is the sum of the EE of a QIC with fixed-fixed ($++$) BCs and that with free-free BCs; and (5) the EE of the $XX$ chain with fixed-fixed ($+\ensuremath{-}$) BCs is the sum of the EE of a QIC with fixed-fixed ($++$) BCs and that of the first excited state of a QIC with free-free BCs. We fit the half-chain EE with finite-size scaling expansion of terms ${L}^{\ensuremath{-}n}$ and ${L}^{\ensuremath{-}n}lnL$, where $L$ is the length of the spin chain. We find that the fitted parameters for the leading term $lnL$ and the constant term are consistent with conformal field theory and that the exact solutions are highly accurate. The fitting accuracy is so high that the fitted central charge of the Ising model is $0.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}26}$ for the periodic boundary condition. From the higher-order corrections in the fitted expansion, we find that there exist ${L}^{\ensuremath{-}4}lnL$ and higher-order corrections for the fixed-fixed ($+\ensuremath{-}$) boundary conditions, whereas there exist ${L}^{\ensuremath{-}3}lnL$ and higher-order corrections for the fixed-free boundary conditions. These types of corrections mean corrections of the central charge.

Entanglement and boundary entropy in quantum spin chains with arbitrary direction of the boundary magnetic fields

J. C. Xavier, M. A. Rajabpour

We calculate the entanglement and the universal boundary entropy (BE) in critical quantum spin chains, such as the transverse field Ising chain and the XXZ chain, with arbitrary direction of the boundary magnetic field (ADBMF). We determine the boundary universality class that an ADBMF induces. In particular, we show that the induced boundary conformal field theory depends on the point on the Bloch sphere where the boundary magnetic field directs. We show that the classification of the directions boils down to the simple fact that the boundary field breaks the bulk symmetry or does not. We present a procedure to estimate the universal BE, based on the finite-size corrections of the entanglement entropy, which apply to ADBMF. To calculate the universal BE in the XXZ chain, we use the density matrix renormalization group. The transverse field XY chain with ADBMF after Jordan-Wigner transformation is not a quadratic free fermion Hamiltonian. We map this model to a quadratic free fermion chain by introducing two extra ancillary spins coupled to the main chain at the boundaries, which makes the problem integrable. The eigenstates of the transverse field XY chain can be obtained by proper projection in the enlarged chain. Using this mapping, we are able to calculate the entanglement entropy of the transverse field XY chain using the usual correlation matrix technique up to relatively large sizes.

Boundary Conformal Field Theory and Entanglement Entropy in Two-Dimensional Quantum Lifshitz Critical Point

Oshikawa Masaki

I discuss the von Neumann entanglement entropy in two-dimensional quantum Lifshitz criical point, namely in Rokhsar-Kivelson type critical wavefunctions. I follow the approach proposed by B. Hsu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 115421 (2009)], but point out a subtle problem concerning compactification of replica boson fields: although one can define a set of new boson fields by linear combinations of the original fields, the new fields are not compactified independently. In order to systematically study boundary conformal field theory of multicomponent free bosons, I employ a geometric formulation based on compactification lattices. The result from the boundary conformal field theory agrees exactly with alternative calculations by J.-M. Stephan et al. [Phys. Rev. B 80, 184421 (2009)], confirming its universality as argued originally by B. Hsu et al.
