Using the phenomenological renormalization group (PRG), we evaluate the low-energy excitation spectrum along the critical line of a quantum spin chain having a local interaction between three Ising spins and longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, i.e., a Turban model. The low-energy excitation spectrum found with the PRG agrees with the spectrum predicted for the (D(4),A(4)) conformal minimal model under a nontrivial correspondence between translations at the critical line and discrete lattice translations. Under this correspondence, the measurements confirm a prediction that the critical line of this quantum spin chain and the critical point of the two-dimensional three-state Potts model are in the same universality class.
We apply a real-space block renormalization group approach to study the critical properties of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain with multispin interactions. First, we recover the known properties of the traditional model with two-spin interactions by applying the renormalization approach for the arbitrary size of the block. For the model with three-spin couplings, we calculate the critical point and demonstrate that the phase transition is controlled by an infinite disorder fixed point. We have determined the typical correlation-length critical exponent, which seems to be different from that of the random transverse Ising chain with nearest-neighbor couplings. Thus, this model represents a new infinite disorder universality class.
We have studied the antiferromagnetic Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field
hx and uniform longitudinal field
hz. Using the density-matrix renormalization group calculation combined with a finite-size scaling the ground-state phase diagram in
(hx,hz) plane is determined. It is shown that there is an order-disordered transition line in this plane and the critical properties belong to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model. Based on the perturbation theory in
hz the scaling behavior of the mass gap in the vicinity of the critical point
(hx=1/2,hz=0) is established. It is found that the form of the transition line near the classical multicritical point
(hx=0,hz=1) is linear. The connection of the considered quantum model with the quasi-one-dimensional classical Ising model in the magnetic field is discussed.
The
q-state Potts chain with ferromagnetic couplings,
J=1, in the presence of a transverse field $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ has a quantum phase transition at $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}/q=1$, which is continuous for $q\ensuremath{\le}4$ and of first order for
q>4. Here we introduce a
q-periodic alternating longitudinal field of strength
h and study the phase diagram and the critical properties of the model. For $h<q/(q\ensuremath{-}1)$, there is a ferromagnetic ordered phase, for $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}<{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{c}(h)$, and at $h=q/(q\ensuremath{-}1)$, there is a classical endpoint at $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}=0$, with finite entropy at
T=0. We considered the
q=3 model and using density matrix renormalization group techniques, we calculated the low-lying spectrum of the Hamiltonian, the transverse magnetization, and the spin-spin correlation function, all of which signal a diverging correlation length at the transition point with the exponent of the three-state Potts model. In the vicinity of the classical endpoint, the model is mapped to a quantum hard rod model, which also belongs to the universality class of the ferromagnetic three-state Potts model. Also, the spectrum of the critical Hamiltonian is found in agreement with conformal invariance. At the same time, the correlation function shows a jump at the transition point, and thus the transition is of mixed order for $h<q/(q\ensuremath{-}1)$.
We study a one-dimensional spin-chain interacting with long-range dipolar forces in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The system exhibits a quantum critical point belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class, whose critical behavior is investigated using the nonperturbative density-matrix and functional renormalization group methods. Interestingly, we find that linear spin-wave theory predicts a magnon dispersion characterized by a logarithmic singularity in the magnon velocity for vanishing momenta, due to the peculiar behavior of dipole-dipole interactions in one dimension. However, in the vicinity of the critical point this logarithmically divergent term is renormalized to zero by the effects of quantum fluctuations, signaling the reemergence of scale invariance, in accordance with the Ising critical scenario.
By computing the low-lying energy excitation spectra with the density matrix renormalization group algorithm we show that boundaries polarized in the direction of the transverse field lead to scale-invariant conformal towers of states at the critical point of the quantum four-state Potts model - a special symmetric case of the Ashkin-Teller model. Furthermore, by direct comparison of the excitation spectra we phenomenologically establish the duality between the transverse-polarized and three-state-mixed boundary conditions at the four-state Potts critical point. Finally, for completeness, we verify that in the quantum three-state Potts model the "new" boundary conditions dual to the mixed ones can be realized by polarizing edge spins along the transverse field.
