Onsager vortex formation in two-component Bose–Einstein condensates in two-dimensional traps

Junsik Han, Makoto Tsubota

We study numerically the dynamics of quantized vortices in two-dimensional one-component and two-component Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped by a harmonic and box potentials. In two-component miscible BECs, we confirmed the tendency of the formation of Onsager vortices in both traps. The vortices in one component separate spatially from those in the other component, which comes from their intercomponent-coupling. We also discuss the decay of the number of vortices.

Vortex interaction dynamics in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Pedro J. Torres, R. Carretero-González, Stephan Middelkamp +3 more

Motivated by recent experiments studyingthe dynamics ofconfigurations bearing a small number of vortices inatomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), weillustrate that such systems can be accurately described byordinary differential equations (ODEs) incorporating the precessionand interaction dynamics ofvortices inharmonic traps. This dynamics is tackled in detail at the ODE level, both forthe simpler case of equal charge vortices, and for the more complicated(yet also experimentally relevant) case of opposite charge vortices. In the former case, we identify the dynamics as being chieflyquasi-periodic (although potentially periodic), while in thelatter, irregular dynamics may ensuewhen suitableexternal drive of the BEC cloud is also considered. Our analytical findings arecorroborated by numerical computations of the reduced ODE system.

Ergoregion instabilities in rotating two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates: new perspectives on the stability of quantized vortices

Luca Giacomelli, Iacopo Carusotto

We investigate the stability of vortices in two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates. In analogy with rotating spacetimes and with a careful account of boundary conditions, we show that the dynamical instability of multiply quantized vortices in trapped condensates persists in untrapped, spatially homogeneous geometries and has an ergoregion nature with some modification due to the peculiar dispersion of Bogoliubov sound. Our results open new perspectives to the physics of vortices in trapped condensates, where multiply quantized vortices can be stabilized by interference effects and singly charged vortices can become unstable in suitably designed trap potentials. We show how superradiant scattering can be observed also in the short-time dynamics of dynamically unstable systems, providing an alternative point of view on dynamical (in)stability phenomena in spatially finite systems.
