Dynamics of Pair Correlations in the Attractive Lieb-Liniger Gas

Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas after a quench from the Tonks-Girardeau regime to the regime of strong attractive interactions applying analytical techniques and numerical simulations. After the quench the system is found to be predominantly in an excited gaslike state, the so-called super-Tonks gas, however with a small coherent admixture of two-particle bound states. Despite its small amplitude, the latter leads to a pronounced oscillation of the local density correlation with a frequency corresponding to the binding energy of the pair. Contributions from bound states with larger particle numbers are found to be negligible.

Repulsive-to-attractive interaction quenches of a one-dimensional Bose gas in a harmonic trap

Wladimir Tschischik, Masudul Haque

We consider quantum quenches of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons from repulsive-to-attractive interactions. We study the resulting breathing dynamics of the so-called ``super-Tonks-Girardeau'' (STG) state at large attraction, or of its analog at moderate or small attraction. This state is highly excited compared to the ground state of the attractive gas, and is the lowest eigenstate where the particles are not bound or clustered. We analyze the dynamics from a spectral point of view, identifying the relevant eigenstates of the interacting trapped many-body system, and analyzing the nature of these quantum eigenstates. To obtain explicit eigenspectra, we use Hamiltonians with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces to approximate the Lieb-Liniger system. We employ two very different approximate approaches: an expansion in a truncated single-particle harmonic-trap basis and a lattice (Bose-Hubbard) model. We show how the breathing frequency, identified with the energy difference between the sTG state and another particular eigenstate, varies with interaction.

Transition from a Tonks-Girardeau gas to a super-Tonks-Girardeau gas as an exact many-body dynamics problem

Shu Chen, Liming Guan, Xiangguo Yin +2 more

We investigate transition of a one-dimensional interacting Bose gas from a strongly repulsive regime to a strongly attractive regime, where a stable highly excited state known as the super Tonks-Girardeau gas was experimentally realized very recently. By solving exact dynamics of the integrable Lieb-Liniger Bose gas, we demonstrate that such an excited gas state can be a very stable dynamic state. Furthermore we calculate the breathing mode of the super Tonks-Girardeau gas which is found to be in good agreement with experimental observation. Our results show that the highly excited super Tonks-Girardeau gas phase can be well understood from the fundamental theory of the solvable Bose gas.

Local correlations in the super-Tonks-Girardeau gas

Márton Kormos, Giuseppe Mussardo, Andrea Trombettoni

We study the local correlations in the super Tonks-Girardeau gas, a highly excited, strongly correlated state obtained in quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases by tuning the scattering length to large negative values using a confinement-induced resonance. Exploiting a connection with a relativistic field theory, we obtain results for the two-body and three-body local correlators at zero and finite temperature. At zero temperature, our result for the three-body correlator agrees with the extension of the results of Cheianov et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 051604(R) (2006)], obtained for the ground state of the repulsive Lieb-Liniger gas, to the super-Tonks-Girardeau state. At finite temperature, we obtain that the three-body correlator has a weak dependence on temperature up to the degeneracy temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{D}}$. We also find that, for temperatures larger than ${T}_{\mathrm{D}}$, the values of the three-body correlator for the super-Tonks-Girardeau gas and the corresponding repulsive Lieb-Liniger gas are rather similar, even for relatively small couplings.

Metastable Criticality and the Super Tonks-Girardeau Gas

Miłosz Panfil, Jacopo De Nardis, Jean-Sébastien Caux

We consider a 1D Bose gas with attractive interactions in a highly excited state containing no bound states. We show that in this so-called super Tonks-Girardeau gas, relaxation processes are suppressed, making the system metastable over long time scales. We compute dynamical correlation functions, revealing the structure of excitations, an enhancement of umklapp correlations and new branches due to intermediate bound states. These features give a clear signature of the super Tonks-Girardeau regime and can be used to experimentally identify it. We demonstrate that, despite its off-equilibrium nature, the system displays critical behavior: correlation functions are characterized by asymptotic power-law decay described by the Luttinger liquid framework.

Beyond the Tonks-Girardeau Gas: Strongly Correlated Regime in Quasi-One-Dimensional Bose Gases

G. E. Astrakharchik, Jordi Boronat, J. Casulleras +1 more

We consider a homogeneous 1D Bose gas with contact interactions and a large attractive coupling constant. This system can be realized in tight waveguides by exploiting a confinement induced resonance of the effective 1D scattering amplitude. By using the diffusion Monte Carlo method we show that, for small densities, the gaslike state is well described by a gas of hard rods. The critical density for cluster formation is estimated using the variational Monte Carlo method. The behavior of the correlation functions and of the frequency of the lowest breathing mode for harmonically trapped systems shows that the gas is more strongly correlated than in the Tonks-Girardeau regime.

Evidence for the super Tonks–Girardeau gas

Murray T. Batchelor, Michael Bortz, X W Guan +1 more

We provide evidence in support of a recent proposal by Astrakharchik et al for the existence of a super Tonks–Girardeau gas-like state in the attractive interaction regime of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases. We show that the super Tonks–Girardeau gas-like state corresponds to a highly excited Bethe state in the integrable interacting Bose gas for which the bosons acquire hard-core behaviour. The gas-like state properties vary smoothly throughout a wide range from strong repulsion to strong attraction. There is an additional stable gas-like phase in this regime in which the bosons form two-body bound states behaving like hard-core bosons.
