Abstract

We have shown that a model of weakly coupled Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with small exchange integrals proposed in Phys.Rev.Lett.104,237207 (2010) is not justified for LiCuVO4.

In a comment on arXiv:1006.5070v2, Drechsler et al. claim that the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain LiCuVO4 should be described by a strong rather than weak ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction, in contradiction with their previous work. Their comment is based on DMRG and ED calculations of the magnetization curve and the magnetic excitations. We show that their parameters are at odds with the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic excitation spectrum, once intensities are taken into account, and that the magnetization curve cannot discriminate between largely different parameter sets within experimental uncertainties. We further show that their new exact diagonalization results support the validity of the RPA-approach, and strongly reinforce our conclusion on the existence of a four-spinon continuum in LiCuVO4, see Enderle et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 (2010) 237207.

Comment on ‘‘Ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with anisotropy’’

Kiyomi Okamoto, Dai Nishino

The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain has been studied by Hida [Phys. Rev. B 46, 8268 (1992)]. We point out an error in his bosonized Hamiltonian representation of this model and also show that his numerical results can be well explained by use of the corrected form of the bosonized Hamiltonian.

Model with propagating spinons beyond one dimension

Fedor Aleksandrovich Smirnov, Alexei M. Tsvelik

For the model of the frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet described by Nersesyan and Tsvelik [Phys. Rev. B 67, 024422 (2003)], we calculate correlation functions of staggered magnetization and dimerization. The model is formulated as a collection of antiferromagnetic chains weakly coupled by a frustrated exchange interaction. The calculation for the case of four chains demonstrates that these functions do not vanish. Since the correlation functions in question factorize into a product of correlation functions of spinon creation and annihilation operators, this constitutes a proof that spinons in this model propagate in the direction perpendicular to the chains.
