Abstract

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a ferrimagnetic decorated spin-$(\frac{1}{2},1)$ Heisenberg chain with spin-1 pendant spins are investigated for three cases: (A) ${J}_{1},{J}_{2}>0$; (B) ${J}_{1}>0$ and ${J}_{2}<0$; and (C) ${J}_{1}<0$ and ${J}_{2}>0$, where ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ are the exchange couplings between spins in the chain and along the rung, respectively. The low-lying and magnetic properties are explored jointly by the real-space renormalization group, spin wave, and density-matrix renormalization-group methods, while the transfer-matrix renormalization-group method is invoked to study the thermodynamics. It is found that the magnon spectra consist of a gapless and two gapped branches. Two branches in case (C) have intersections. The coupling dependence of low-energy gaps are analyzed. In a magnetic field, a $m=\frac{3}{2}$ ($m$ is the magnetization per unit cell) plateau is observed for case (A), while two plateaux at $m=\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{3}{2}$ are observed for cases (B) and (C). Between the two plateaux in cases (B) and (C), the sublattice magnetizations for the spins coupled by ferromagnetic interactions have decreasing regions with increasing the magnetic field. At finite temperature, the zero-field susceptibility temperature product $\ensuremath{\chi}T$ and specific heat exhibit distinct exotic features with varying the couplings and temperature for different cases. $\ensuremath{\chi}T$ is found to converge as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, which is different from the divergent behavior in the spin-$(\frac{1}{2},1)$ mixed-spin chain without pendants. The observed thermodynamic behaviors are also discussed with the help of their low-lying excitations.

Magnetism and thermodynamics of spin- 1∕2 Heisenberg diamond chains in a magnetic field

Bo Gu, Gang Su

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of spin-$1∕2$ Heisenberg diamond chains are investigated in three different cases: (a) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{2}$, ${J}_{3}>0$ (frustrated), (b) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{3}<0$, ${J}_{2}>0$ (frustrated), and (c) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{2}>0$, ${J}_{3}<0$ (nonfrustrated), where the bond coupling ${J}_{i}$ $(i=1,2,3)>0$ stands for an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, and $<0$ for a ferromagnetic (F) interaction. The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) technique is invoked to study the properties of the system in the ground state, while the transfer-matrix renormalization-group (TMRG) technique is applied to explore the thermodynamic properties. The local magnetic moments, spin-correlation functions, and static structure factors are discussed in the ground state for the three cases. It is shown that the static structure factor $S(q)$ shows peaks at wave vectors $q=a\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$ $(a=0,1,2,3,4,5)$ for different couplings in a zero magnetic field, which, however, in the magnetic fields where the magnetization plateau with $m=1∕6$ pertains, exhibits the peaks only at $q=0$, $2\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, and $4\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, which are found to be couplings independent. The DMRG results of the zero-field static structure factor can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of six modes, where two fitting equations are proposed. It is observed that the six modes are closely related to the low-lying excitations of the system. At finite temperatures, the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat show various behaviors for different couplings. The double-peak structures of the susceptibility, and specific heat against temperature are obtained, where the peak positions and heights are found to depend on the competition of the couplings. It is also uncovered that the $XXZ$ anisotropy of F and AF couplings leads the system of case (c) to display quite different behaviors. In addition, the experimental data of the susceptibility, specific heat, and magnetization for the compound ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{(\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})}_{2}{(\mathrm{O}\mathrm{H})}_{2}$ are fairly compared with our TMRG results.

Thermodynamics of spin- 12 tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

Shou-Shu Gong, Song Wei Gao, Gang Su

The thermodynamic properties of a spin $S=1/2$ tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with alternating interactions ${\text{AF}}_{1}{\text{-AF}}_{2}{\text{-AF}}_{1}\text{-F}$ (AF and F denote the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, respectively) are studied by means of the transfer-matrix renormalization-group method and Jordan-Wigner transformation. It is found that in the absence of magnetic field, the thermodynamic behaviors are closely related to the gapped low-lying excitations, and a novel structure with three peaks in the temperature dependence of specific heat is unveiled. In a magnetic field, a phase diagram in the temperature-field plane for the couplings satisfying ${J}_{{\text{AF}}_{1}}={J}_{{\text{AF}}_{2}}={J}_{\text{F}}$ is obtained, in which various phases are identified. The temperature dependence of thermodynamic quantities including the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat are studied to characterize the corresponding phases. It is disclosed that the magnetization has a crossover behavior at low temperature in the Luttinger liquid phase, which is shown falling into the same class as that in the $S=1$ Haldane chain. In the plateau regime, the thermodynamic behaviors alter at a certain field, which results from the crossing of two excitation spectra. By means of the fermion mapping, it is uncovered that the system has four spectra from fermion and hole excitations that are responsible for the observed thermodynamic behaviors.

Thermodynamics of spin- 1 ∕ 2 antiferromagnet-antiferromagnet-ferromagnet and ferromagnet-ferromagnet-antiferromagnet trimerized quantum Heisenberg chains

Bo Gu, Gang Su, Song Wei Gao

The magnetization process, the susceptibility, and the specific heat of the spin-$1∕2$ antiferromagnet (AF)-AF-ferromagnet (F) and F-F-AF trimerized quantum Heisenberg chains have been investigated by means of the transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) technique as well as the modified spin-wave (MSW) theory. A magnetization plateau at $m=1∕6$ for both trimerized chains is observed at low temperature. The susceptibility and the specific heat show various behaviors for different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions and in different magnetic fields. The TMRG results of susceptibility and the specific heat can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of double two-level systems, where two fitting equations are proposed. Three branch excitations, one gapless excitation and two gapful excitations, for both systems are found within the MSW theory. It is observed that the MSW theory captures the main characteristics of the thermodynamic behaviors at low temperatures. The TMRG results are also compared with the possible experimental data.

Thermodynamics of frustrated ferromagnetic spin- 12 Heisenberg chains: Role of interchain coupling

P. Müller, Johannes Richter, Dieter Ihle

The thermodynamics of coupled frustrated ferromagnetic chains is studied within a spin-rotation-invariant Green's-function approach. We consider an isotropic Heisenberg spin-half system with a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling ${J}_{1}<0$ between nearest neighbors and a frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor in-chain coupling ${J}_{2}>0$. We focus on the moderate strength of frustration ${J}_{2}<|{J}_{1}|/4$ such that the in-chain spin-spin correlations are predominantly ferromagnetic. We consider two interchain couplings (ICs) ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y}$ and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$, corresponding to the two axes perpendicular to the chain, where ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic ICs are taken into account. We discuss the influence of frustration on the ground-state properties for antiferromagnetic ICs, where the ground state is of a quantum nature. The major part of our study is devoted to the finite-temperature properties. We calculate the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ as a function of the competing exchange couplings ${J}_{2},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$. We find that for fixed ICs, ${T}_{c}$ decreases monotonically with increasing frustration ${J}_{2}$, where as ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$ the ${T}_{c}({J}_{2})$ curve drops down rapidly. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above ${T}_{c}$, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathbf{S}}_{0}{\mathbf{S}}_{\mathbf{R}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the magnetic order parameter $M$, the uniform static susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}$, as well as the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$. Moreover, we discuss the specific heat ${C}_{V}$ and the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathbf{q}}$. As ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$, some unusual frustration-induced features were found, such as an increase of the in-chain spin stiffness (in the case of ferromagnetic ICs) or of the in-chain spin-wave velocity (in the case of antiferromagnetic ICs) with growing temperature.

Ground-state phase diagram and thermodynamics of coupled trimer chains

R. R. Montenegro-Filho, E. J. P. Silva-Júnior, Mauricio D. Coutinho-Filho

The density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to describe coupled trimer chains in a magnetic field $h$. The Hamiltonian contains exchange terms involving the intratrimer coupling ${J}_{1}$ (taken as the unit of energy) and the intertrimer coupling ${J}_{2}$, plus the Zeeman interaction for a magnetic field $h$ along the $z$ direction. Results for the magnetization per trimer $m$ are calculated in regimes of positive and negative values of the ratio $J={J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$, from which the rich field-induced ground state phase diagram $h$ versus $J$ is derived, with the presence of a Luttinger liquid, the 1/3 plateau ($m=1/2$), and the one of fully polarized magnetization ($m=3/2$). Also, zero-field Lanczos calculation of the spin-wave dispersion from the 1/3 plateau for ${S}^{z}=1$ is shown at the previous regimes of $J$ values. In addition, we also report on the decay of correlation functions of trimers along open chains, as well as the average two-magnon distribution. The ground state is ferrimagnetic for $0<J\ensuremath{\le}1$, and is a singlet for $\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{\le}J<0$. In the singlet phase, the spin correlation functions along the legs present an antiferromagnetic power-law decay, similar to the spin-1/2 linear chain, thus suggesting that the ground state is made of three coupled antiferromagnetically oriented chains. In the singlet phase, the dimensionless thermal magnetic susceptibility per site normalized by $1/|J|$ gets closer to $1/{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}$ as the temperature $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. For the ferrimagnetic phase, we fit the susceptibility to the experimental data for the compound ${\mathrm{Pb}}_{3}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{({\mathrm{PO}}_{4})}_{4}$ and estimate the model exchange couplings: ${J}_{1}=74.8\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\text{K}$ and $J=0.4$. These values imply a range of energies for the magnon excitations that are in accord with the data from neutron scattering experiments on ${\mathrm{Pb}}_{3}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{({\mathrm{PO}}_{4})}_{4}$ for two excitation modes. The 1/3 plateau closes only at $1/|J|=0$ with $J<0$.

Low-lying excited states and low-temperature properties of an alternating spin-1–spin-1/2 chain: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Swapan Kumar Pati, S. Ramasesha, Diptiman Sen

We report spin wave and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) studies of the ground and low-lying excited states of uniform and dimerized alternating spin chains. The DMRG procedure is also employed to obtain low-temperature thermodynamic properties of the system. The ground state of a 2N spin system with spin-1 and spin- alternating from site to site and interacting via an antiferromagnetic exchange is found to be ferrimagnetic with total spin ${\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{G}}$=N/2 from both DMRG and spin wave analysis. Both the studies also show that there is a gapless excitation to a state with spin ${\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{G}}$-1 and a gapped excitation to a state with spin ${\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{G}}$+1. Surprisingly, the correlation length in the ground state is found to be very small from both the studies for this gapless system. For this very reason, we show that the ground state can be described by a variational ansatz of the product type. DMRG analysis shows that the chain is susceptible to a conditional spin-Peierls' instability. The DMRG studies of magnetization, magnetic susceptibility (\ensuremath{\chi}), and specific heat show strong magnetic-field dependence. The product \ensuremath{\chi}T shows a minimum as a function of temperature (T) at low-magnetic fields and the minimum vanishes at high-magnetic fields. This low-field behavior is in agreement with earlier experimental observations. The specific heat shows a maximum as a function of temperature and the height of the maximum increases sharply at high-magnetic fields. It is hoped that these studies will motivate experimental studies at high-magnetic fields.

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a ferrimagnetic decorated spin-(12,1)(\frac{1}{2},1)(21,1) Heisenberg chain with spin-1 pendant spins are investigated for three cases: (A) J1,J2>0{J}_{1},{J}_{2}>0J1,J2>0; (B) J1>0{J}_{1}>0J1>0 and J2<0{J}_{2}<0J2<0; and (C) J1<0{J}_{1}<0J1<0 and J2>0{J}_{2}>0J2>0, where J1{J}_{1}J1 and J2{J}_{2}J2 are the exchange couplings between spins in the chain and along the rung, respectively. In a magnetic field, a m=32m=\frac{3}{2}m=23 (mmm is the magnetization per unit cell) plateau is observed for case (A), while two plateaux at m=12m=\frac{1}{2}m=21 and 32\frac{3}{2}23 are observed for cases (B) and (C). Between the two plateaux in cases (B) and (C), the sublattice magnetizations for the spins coupled by ferromagnetic interactions have decreasing regions with increasing the magnetic field. At finite temperature, the zero-field susceptibility temperature product \ensuremathχT\ensuremath{\chi}T\ensuremathχT and specific heat exhibit distinct exotic features with varying the couplings and temperature for different cases. \ensuremathχT\ensuremath{\chi}T\ensuremathχT is found to converge as T\ensuremath→0T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0T\ensuremath→0, which is different from the divergent behavior in the spin-(12,1)(\frac{1}{2},1)(21,1) mixed-spin chain without pendants. The observed thermodynamic behaviors are also discussed with the help of their low-lying excitations.
The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of spin-1∕21∕21∕2 Heisenberg diamond chains are investigated in three different cases: (a) J1{J}_{1}J1, J2{J}_{2}J2, J3>0{J}_{3}>0J3>0 (frustrated), (b) J1{J}_{1}J1, J3<0{J}_{3}<0J3<0, J2>0{J}_{2}>0J2>0 (frustrated), and (c) J1{J}_{1}J1, J2>0{J}_{2}>0J2>0, J3<0{J}_{3}<0J3<0 (nonfrustrated), where the bond coupling Ji{J}_{i}Ji (i=1,2,3)>0(i=1,2,3)>0(i=1,2,3)>0 stands for an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, and <0<0<0 for a ferromagnetic (F) interaction. The thermodynamics of coupled frustrated ferromagnetic chains is studied within a spin-rotation-invariant Green's-function approach. We consider an isotropic Heisenberg spin-half system with a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling J1<0{J}_{1}<0J1<0 between nearest neighbors and a frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor in-chain coupling J2>0{J}_{2}>0J2>0. We focus on the moderate strength of frustration J2<∣J1∣/4{J}_{2}<|{J}_{1}|/4J2<∣J1∣/4 such that the in-chain spin-spin correlations are predominantly ferromagnetic. The major part of our study is devoted to the finite-temperature properties. We calculate the critical temperature Tc{T}_{c}Tc as a function of the competing exchange couplings ${J}_{2},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$. We find that for fixed ICs, Tc{T}_{c}Tc decreases monotonically with increasing frustration J2{J}_{2}J2, where as ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$ the Tc(J2){T}_{c}({J}_{2})Tc(J2) curve drops down rapidly. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above Tc{T}_{c}Tc, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathbf{S}}_{0}{\mathbf{S}}_{\mathbf{R}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the magnetic order parameter MMM, the uniform static susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}$, as well as the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$.
