Global Phase Diagram of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Arising from Repulsive Three-Body Interactions

Abstract

The model of fermions in a magnetic field interacting via a purely three-body repulsive interaction has attracted interest because it produces, in the limit of short range interaction, the Pfaffian state with non-Abelian excitations. We show that this is part of a rich phase diagram containing a host of fractional quantum Hall states, a composite fermion Fermi sea, and a pairing transition. This is entirely unexpected, because the appearance of composite fermions and fractional quantum Hall effect is ordinarily thought to be a result of strong two-body repulsion. Recent breakthroughs in ultracold atoms have facilitated the realization of such a system, where this physics can be tested.

Particle-hole-symmetric model for a paired fractional quantum Hall state in a half-filled Landau level

William Hutzel, John J. McCord, Peter Raum +4 more

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) observed at half filling of the second Landau level is believed to be caused by a pairing of composite fermions captured by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function. The generating Hamiltonian for the Moore-Read Pfaffian is a purely three-body model that breaks particle-hole symmetry and lacks other properties, such as dominate two-body repulsive interactions, expected from a physical model of the FQHE. We use exact diagonalization to study the low-energy states of a more physical two-body generator model derived from the three-body model. We find that the two-body model exhibits the essential features expected from the Moore-Read Pfaffian: pairing, non-Abelian anyon excitations, and a neutral fermion mode. The model also satisfies constraints expected for a physical model of the FQHE at half-filling because it is short range, spatially decaying, particle-hole symmetric, and supports a roton mode with a robust spectral gap in the thermodynamic limit. Hence, this two-body model offers a bridge between artificial three-body generator models for paired states and the physical Coulomb interaction and can be used to further explore properties of non-Abelian physics in the FQHE.

Composite fermionization of bosons in rapidly rotating atomic traps

Nicolas Regnault

The system of neutral bosons in rapidly rotating atomic trap is equivalent to charged bosons coupled to a magnetic field, which has opened up the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) for bosons interacting with a short range interaction. We present numerical evidences for incompressible liquids at filling fractions ν = 1/2, 2/3, 3/4. Motivated by the composite fermion (CF) theory of the FQHE for electrons, we show how interacting bosons can be mapped into non-interacting spinless fermions carrying one vortex each. This provides an elegant explanation of the fractional quantum Hall states in this system. We use overlap calculations to test how the CF model fits with exact numerical results. At ν = 1, the fermionization appears to overcompensate for the repulsive interaction between bosons producing an attractive interaction between fermions, as evidence by a pairing of fermions. In that case, the Pfaffian state is a good candidate to describe the ground state of such system.

A Pfaffian quantum Hall state of ultracold bosons

Joyce Kwan, Perrin Segura, Yanfei Li +7 more

Fractional quantum Hall states are a cornerstone of topological physics, hosting fractionally charged quasiparticles with exotic statistics that promise to enable topologically protected quantum information processing. Among these, the Pfaffian state introduced by Moore and Read implements a p-wave pairing structure that supports excitations with non-Abelian exchange statistics. Despite extensive study in electronic systems, direct access to its pairing structure has remained limited. Here we realize a three-particle bosonic Pfaffian state of ultracold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in an optical lattice subject to a Floquet-engineered synthetic magnetic field. Using a Bayesian-optimized adiabatic protocol, we prepare a state exhibiting Pfaffian pairing correlations. Site-resolved measurements of multi-point density correlations reveal a pronounced suppression of short-range three-body coincidences, reflecting the underlying pairing structure. We further probe the state's transport response through Hall drift measurements. Our results establish a bottom-up approach to engineering non-Abelian topological order and lay the groundwork for future explorations of anyonic braiding in synthetic matter.

States of interacting composite fermions at the Landau level filling ν=2+3/8

Csaba Tőke, Chuntai Shi, Jainendra K. Jain

There is increasing experimental evidence for fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=2+3/8$. Modeling it as a system of composite fermions, we study the problem of interacting composite fermions by a number of methods. In our variational study, we consider the Fermi sea, the Pfaffian paired state, and bubble and stripe phases of composite fermions, and find that the Fermi sea state is favored for a wide range of transverse thickness. However, when we incorporate interactions between composite fermions through composite-fermion diagonalization on systems with up to 25 composite fermions, we find that a gap opens at the Fermi level, suggesting that inter-composite fermion interaction can induce fractional quantum Hall effect at $\ensuremath{\nu}=2+3/8$. The resulting state is seen to be distinct from the Pfaffian wave function.

Fermions out of dipolar bosons in the lowest Landau level

Brice Chung, Th. Jolicœur

In the limit of very fast rotation atomic Bose-Einstein condensates may entirely reside in the lowest two-dimensional Landau level (LLL). For small enough filling factor of the LLL, one may have formation of fractional quantum Hall states. We investigate the case of bosons with dipolar interactions as may be realized with chromium-52 atoms. We show that at a filling factor equal to unity the ground state is a Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) paired state as is the case of bosons with purely $s$-wave scattering interactions. This Pfaffian state is destabilized when the interaction in the $s$-wave channel is small enough and the ground state is a stripe phase with unidimensional density modulation. For filling factor 1/3, we show that there is formation of a Fermi sea of ``composite fermions.'' These composites are made of one boson bound with three vortices. This phase has a wide range of stability and the effective mass of the fermions essentially depends only on the scattering amplitude in momentum channels larger or equal to 2. The formation of such a Fermi sea opens up a new possible route to detection of the quantum Hall correlations.

Composite Fermion Pairing Induced by Landau Level Mixing

Tongzhou Zhao, Ajit Coimbatore Balram, Jainendra K. Jain

Pairing of composite fermions provides a possible mechanism for fractional quantum Hall effect at even denominator fractions and is believed to serve as a platform for realizing quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics. We present results from fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo calculations which predict that substantial Landau level mixing can induce a pairing of composite fermions at filling factors ν=1/2 and ν=1/4 in the l=-3 relative angular momentum channel, thereby destabilizing the composite-fermion Fermi seas to produce non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states.
