Fano resonances and entanglement entropy

Abstract

We study the entanglement in the ground state of a chain of free spinless fermions with a single side-coupled impurity. We find a logarithmic scaling for the entanglement entropy of a segment neighboring the impurity. The prefactor of the logarithm varies continuously and contains an impurity contribution described by a one-parameter function while the contribution of the unmodified boundary enters additively. The coefficient is found explicitly by pointing out similarities with other models involving interface defects. The proposed formula gives excellent agreement with our numerical data. If the segment has an open boundary, one finds a rapidly oscillating subleading term in the entropy that persists in the limit of large block sizes. The particle-number fluctuation inside the subsystem is also reported. It is analogous with the expression for the entropy scaling, however, with a simpler functional form for the coefficient.

Effect of single impurity on free fermion entanglement entropy

Mohammad Pouranvari, Kun Yang, Alexander Seidel

The one-dimensional free Fermi gas is a prototype conformally invariant system whose entanglement properties are well understood. In this paper, the effects of a single impurity on one-dimensional free fermion entanglement entropy are studied both analytically and numerically. Such an impurity represents an exactly marginal perturbation to the bulk conformally invariant fixed point. We find that the impurity leads to subleading contributions to the entanglement entropy that scale inversely with the subsystem size. The origins of such contributions are identified.

Entanglement negativity in a fermionic chain with dissipative defects: exact results

Fabio Caceffo, Vincenzo Alba

Abstract We investigate the dynamics of the fermionic logarithmic negativity in a free-fermion chain with a localized loss, which acts as a dissipative impurity. The chain is initially prepared in a generic Fermi sea. In the standard hydrodynamic limit of large subsystems and long times, with their ratio fixed, the negativity between two subsystems is described by a simple formula, which depends only on the effective absorption coefficient of the impurity. The negativity grows linearly at short times, then saturating to a volume-law scaling. Physically, this reflects the continuous production with time of entangling pairs of excitations at the impurity site. Interestingly, the negativity is not the same as the Rényi mutual information with Rényi index 1 / 2 , in contrast with the case of unitary dynamics. This reflects the interplay between dissipative and unitary processes. The negativity content of the entangling pairs is obtained in terms of an effective two-state mixed density matrix for the subsystems. Criticality in the initial Fermi sea is reflected in the presence of logarithmic corrections. The prefactor of the logarithmic scaling depends on the loss rate, suggesting a nontrivial interplay between dissipation and criticality.

The entanglement entropy of one-dimensional systems in continuous and homogeneous space

Pasquale Calabrese, Mihail Mintchev, Ettore Vicari

We introduce a systematic framework for calculating the bipartite entanglement entropy of a compact spatial subsystem in a one-dimensional quantum gas which can be mapped into a non-interacting fermion system. We show that when working with a finite number of particles N , the Rényi entanglement entropies grow as ln N , with a prefactor that is given by the central charge. We apply this novel technique to the ground state and to excited states of periodic systems. We also consider systems with boundaries. We derive universal formulas for the leading behavior and for subleading corrections to the scaling. The universality of the results allows us to make predictions for the finite size scaling forms of the corrections to the scaling.

Entanglement scaling in two-dimensional gapless systems

Hyejin Ju, Ann B. Kallin, Paul Fendley +2 more

We numerically determine subleading scaling terms in the ground-state entanglement entropy of several two-dimensional (2D) gapless systems, including a Heisenberg model with N\'eel order, a free Dirac fermion in the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase, and the nearest-neighbor resonating-valence-bond wave function. For these models, we show that the entanglement entropy between cylindrical regions of length $x$ and $L\ensuremath{-}x$, extending around a torus of length $L$, depends on the dimensionless ratio $x/L$. This can be well approximated on finite-size lattices by a function $\mathrm{ln}(\mathrm{sin}(\ensuremath{\pi}x/L)),$ akin to the familiar chord-length dependence in one dimension. We provide evidence, however, that the precise form of this bulk-dependent contribution is a more general function in the 2D thermodynamic limit.

Quantum impurity entanglement

Erik Schwartz Sørensen, Ming-Shyang Chang, Nicolas Laflorencie +1 more

Entanglement in J 1 – J 2 , S = 1/2 quantum spin chains with an impurity is studied using analytic methods as well as large scale numerical density matrix renormalization group methods. The entanglement is investigated in terms of the von Neumann entropy, S = −Trρ A logρ A , for a subsystem A of size r of the chain. The impurity contribution to the uniform part of the entanglement entropy, S imp , is defined and analysed in detail in both the gapless, J 2 ≤ J 2 c , as well as the dimerized phase, J 2 > J 2 c , of the model. This quantum impurity model is in the universality class of the single channel Kondo model and it is shown that in a quite universal way the presence of the impurity in the gapless phase, J 2 ≤ J 2 c , gives rise to a large length scale, ξ K , associated with the screening of the impurity, the size of the Kondo screening cloud. The universality of Kondo physics then implies scaling of the form S imp ( r /ξ K , r / R ) for a system of size R . Numerical results are presented clearly demonstrating this scaling. At the critical point, J 2 c , an analytic approach based on a Fermi liquid picture, valid at distances and energy scales , is developed and analytic results at T = 0 are obtained showing S imp = πξ K [1+π(1− r / R )cot(π r / R )]/(12 R ) for finite R . For T >0, in the thermodynamic limit, we find S imp = [π 2 ξ K T /(6 v )]coth(2π rT / v ), with v the spin-wave velocity. In the dimerized phase an appealing picture of the entanglement is developed in terms of a thin soliton (TS) ansatz and the notions of impurity valence bonds (IVB) and single particle entanglement (SPE) are introduced. The TS-ansatz permits a variational calculation of the complete entanglement in the dimerized phase that appears to be exact in the thermodynamic limit at the Majumdar–Ghosh point, J 2 = J 1 /2, and surprisingly precise even close to the critical point J 2 c . In the appendices the TS-ansatz is further used to calculate and with high precision at the Majumdar–Ghosh point and the relation between the finite temperature entanglement entropy, S ( T ), and the thermal entropy, S th ( T ), is discussed. Finally, the alternating part of S imp is discussed, together with its relation to the boundary induced dimerization.

Entanglement entropy of random partitioning

Gergő Roósz, István A. Kovács, Ferenc Iglói

Abstract We study the entanglement entropy of random partitions in one- and two-dimensional critical fermionic systems. In an infinite system we consider a finite, connected (hypercubic) domain of linear extent L, the points of which with probability p belong to the subsystem. The leading contribution to the average entanglement entropy is found to scale with the volume as a(p)LD, where a(p) is a non-universal function, to which there is a logarithmic correction term, b(p)LD−1 ln L. In 1D the prefactor is given by b(p)=c/3f(p), where c is the central charge of the model and f(p) is a universal function. In 2D the prefactor has a different functional form of p below and above the percolation threshold. Graphical abstract
