Abstract

We study the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions 7/3 and 5/2 in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction, using the exact diagonalization method and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in a spherical geometry. Trial wave functions at these fillings are the Laughlin state and the Moore-Reed-Pfaffian state. The ground state excitation energy gaps and pair-correlation functions at fractional filling factor 7/3 and 5/2 in the second Landau level are calculated. We find that the spin-orbit interaction stabilizes the fractional quantum Hall states.

Quantum Phase Transitions Induced by the Spin–Orbit Interaction in theN= 1 Landau Level

Toru Ito, Kentaro Nomura, Naokazu Shibata

The effect of the spin–orbit interaction on the fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors ν= 7/3, 5/2, and 12/5 is studied by the exact diagonalization method and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We calculate the excitation energy gap, ground-state pair-correlation functions, and the topological entanglement entropy to analyze the effect of the spin–orbit interaction. The obtained results show that, at ν=7/3, the spin–orbit interaction destabilizes the parafermion state, leading to the phase transition to the Laughlin state. At ν=5/2 the Pfaffian state is stabilized but the phase transition to the composite fermion liquid state finally occurs. At ν=12/5, the parafermion ground state is destabilized and the phase transition to the Jain state occurs.

Spin polarization of the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state

Adrian E. Feiguin, Edward H. Rezayi, Kun Yang +2 more

We numerically study the spin polarization of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$. By using both exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group methods on the sphere, we are able to analyze more values of partial spin polarization (in addition to fully polarized and unpolarized) than any previous studies. We find that for the Coulomb interaction the exact finite-system ground state is fully polarized, for shifts corresponding to both the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate (anti-Pfaffian). This result is found to be robust against small variations in the interaction and change of shift. The low-energy excitation spectrum is consistent with spin-wave excitations of a fully magnetized ferromagnet.

New Trial Wave Functions for Quantum Hall States at Half Filling

Jian Cheng Yang

New trial wave functions corresponding to half filling quantum Hall states are proposed. These wave functions are constructed by first pairing up the quasielectrons of the 1/3 Laughlin quantum Hall state, with the same relative angular momentum for each pair, and then making the paired quasielectrons condense into a 1/4 Laughlin state. The quasiparticle excitations of the proposed wave functions carry $\pm1/4$ of electron charge, and obey Abelian fractional statistics. In the spherical geometry, the total flux quanta $N_ϕ$ is shown to be related to the number of electrons $N$ by $N_ϕ = 2N-(5-q)$ with $q$ being the relative angular momentum between the quasielectrons in each pair which takes values of non-negative even integers. The overlaps are calculated between the proposed trial wave functions, including the ground state, quasiexciton states, and quasihole states, and the exact states of the finite size systems at $N_ϕ = 2N-3$. The near unity overlaps are obtained in the lowest Landau level, while the moderate overlaps are obtained in the second Landau level. The relevance of the wave functions to the yet to be discovered fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level, as well as the 5/2 quantum Hall effect is also discussed.

Toward a New Theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

Sergey A. Mikhailov

The fractional quantum Hall effect was experimentally discovered in 1982. It was observed that the Hall conductivity σyx of a two-dimensional electron system is quantized, σyx=e2/3h, in the vicinity of the Landau level filling factor ν=1/3. In 1983, Laughlin proposed a trial many-body wave function, which he claimed described a “new state of matter”—a homogeneous incompressible liquid with fractionally charged quasiparticles. Here, I develop an exact diagonalization theory that allows one to calculate the energy and other physical properties of the ground and excited states of a system of N two-dimensional Coulomb interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field. I analyze the energies, electron densities, and other physical properties of the systems with N≤7 electrons continuously as a function of magnetic field in the range 1/4≲ν<1. The results show that both the ground and excited states of the system resemble a sliding Wigner crystal whose parameters are influenced by the magnetic field. Energy gaps in the many-particle spectra appear and disappear as the magnetic field changes. I also calculate the physical properties of the ν=1/3 Laughlin state for N≤8 and compare the results with the exact ones. This comparison, as well as an analysis of some other statements published in the literature, show that the Laughlin state and its fractionally charged excitations do not describe the physical reality, neither at small N nor in the thermodynamic limit. The results obtained shed new light on the nature of the ground and excited states in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Fractional quantum Hall hierarchy and the second Landau level

Parsa Bonderson, Johannes K. Slingerland

We generalize the fractional quantum Hall hierarchy picture to apply to arbitrary, possibly non-Abelian, fractional quantum Hall states. Applying this to the $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ Moore-Read state, we construct explicit trial wave functions to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level. The resulting hierarchy of states, which reproduces the filling fractions of all observed Hall conductance plateaus in the second Landau level, is characterized by electron pairing in the ground state and an excitation spectrum that includes non-Abelian anyons of the Ising type. We propose this as a unifying picture in which $p$-wave pairing characterizes the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level.

Particle-hole-symmetric model for a paired fractional quantum Hall state in a half-filled Landau level

William Hutzel, John J. McCord, Peter Raum +4 more

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) observed at half filling of the second Landau level is believed to be caused by a pairing of composite fermions captured by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function. The generating Hamiltonian for the Moore-Read Pfaffian is a purely three-body model that breaks particle-hole symmetry and lacks other properties, such as dominate two-body repulsive interactions, expected from a physical model of the FQHE. We use exact diagonalization to study the low-energy states of a more physical two-body generator model derived from the three-body model. We find that the two-body model exhibits the essential features expected from the Moore-Read Pfaffian: pairing, non-Abelian anyon excitations, and a neutral fermion mode. The model also satisfies constraints expected for a physical model of the FQHE at half-filling because it is short range, spatially decaying, particle-hole symmetric, and supports a roton mode with a robust spectral gap in the thermodynamic limit. Hence, this two-body model offers a bridge between artificial three-body generator models for paired states and the physical Coulomb interaction and can be used to further explore properties of non-Abelian physics in the FQHE.
