Abstract

In this Letter we consider a spin-imbalanced two-component attractive Fermi gas loaded in a 1D optical lattice in the presence of an harmonic confining potential. We propose that the observation of the change in the double occupancy with respect to a lattice depth modulation can provide clear evidence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Simulating the time evolution of the system, we can characterize the double occupancy spectrum for different initial conditions. In particular, we numerically observe a striking narrowing of the width of the spectrum for increasing imbalance. Using Bethe-ansatz equations in the strongly interacting limit, we show that the width relates directly to the FFLO wave vector q.

FFLO state in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional optical lattices combined with a non-uniform background potential

T. K. Koponen, Tomi Paananen, J.-P. Martikainen +2 more

We study the phase diagram of an imbalanced two-component Fermi gas in optical lattices of 1–3 dimensions (1D–3D), considering the possibilities of the Fulde–Ferrel–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO), Sarma/breached pair, BCS and normal states as well as phase separation, at finite and zero temperatures. In particular, phase diagrams with respect to average chemical potential and the chemical potential difference of the two components are considered, because this gives the essential information about the shell structures of phases that will occur in the presence of an additional (harmonic) confinement. These phase diagrams in 1D, 2D and 3D show in a striking way the effect of Van Hove singularities on the FFLO state. Although we focus on population imbalanced gases, the results are relevant also for the (effective) mass imbalanced case. We demonstrate by LDA calculations that various shell structures such as normal–FFLO–BCS–FFLO–normal, or FFLO–normal, are possible in presence of a background harmonic trap. The phases are reflected in noise correlations: especially in 1D the unpaired atoms leave a clear signature of the FFLO state as a zero-correlation area ('breach') within the Fermi sea. This strong signature occurs both for a 1D lattice as well as for a 1D continuum. We also discuss the effect of Hartree energies and the Gorkov correction on the phase diagrams.

Expansion dynamics of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

J. Kajala, Francesco Massel, Päivi Törmä

We consider a two-component Fermi gas in the presence of spin imbalance, modeling the system in terms of a one-dimensional attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian initially in the presence of a confining trap potential. With the aid of the time-evolving block decimation method, we investigate the dynamics of the initial state when the trap is switched off. We show that the dynamics of a gas initially in the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is decomposed into the independent expansion of two fluids, namely the paired and the unpaired particles. In particular, the expansion velocity of the unpaired cloud is shown to be directly related to the FFLO momentum. This provides an unambiguous signature of the FFLO state in a remarkably simple way.

Stable nonequilibrium Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a spin-imbalanced driven-dissipative Fermi gas loaded on a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice

Taira Kawamura, Daichi Kagamihara, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type superfluid phase transition in a driven-dissipative two-component Fermi gas. The system is assumed to be in the nonequilibrium steady state, which is tuned by adjusting the chemical potential difference between two reservoirs that are coupled with the system. Including pairing fluctuations by extending the strong-coupling theory developed in the thermal-equilibrium state by Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink to this nonequilibrium case, we show that a nonequilibrium FFLO (NFFLO) phase transition can be realized without spin imbalance, under the conditions that (1) the two reservoirs imprint a two-edge structure on the momentum distribution of Fermi atoms and (2) the system is loaded on a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice. While the two edges work like two Fermi surfaces with different sizes, the role of the optical lattice is to prevent the NFFLO long-range order from destruction by NFFLO pairing fluctuations. We also draw the nonequilibrium mean-field phase diagram in terms of the chemical potential difference between the two reservoirs, a fictitious magnetic field to tune the spin imbalance of the system, and the environmental temperature of the reservoirs to clarify the relation between the NFFLO state and the ordinary thermal-equilibrium FFLO state discussed in spin-imbalanced Fermi gases.

Signature of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phase in the Collective Modes of a Trapped Ultracold Fermi Gas

Jonathan M. Edge, Nigel R. Cooper

We study theoretically the collective modes of a two-component Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap. We focus on an imbalanced gas in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Using a mean-field theory, we study the response of the ground state to time-dependent potentials. For potentials with short wavelengths, we find dramatic signatures in the large-scale response of the gas which are characteristic of the FFLO phase. This response provides an effective way to detect the FFLO state in experiments.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Daniel E. Sheehy

The ground-state phase diagram of attractively interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at a finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and FFLO wave vector $q$ in the ordered phase, finding that $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero-temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and $q$, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in small $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$.

THE FULDE–FERRELL–LARKIN–OVCHINNIKOV STATE IN A 3D FERMI GAS SUBJECTED TO A 1D PERIODIC POTENTIAL

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Serghei N. Klimin, Michiel Wouters +1 more

The question whether an imbalanced Fermi gas can accommodate polarized superfluidity has been the subject of intense study. One prominent candidate for a polarized superfluid state is the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. In a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas, indirect evidence for this state has recently been found, but in the three-dimensional (3D) case, this exotic state has hitherto remained elusive. In this brief review, we study the influence of a 1D periodic potential on the FFLO state in an imbalanced 3D Fermi gas. We present a path-integral derivation of the free energy of the system, where the possibility of the FFLO state is included through the saddle-point approximation. Using the free energy, the phase diagram of the system, both at fixed chemical potentials and at fixed densities, is constructed, showing that the stability region of the FFLO state is significantly enlarged by the 1D potential. Subsequently, the influence of the potential on the FFLO pairing mechanism is investigated, leading to a qualitative understanding of the shape of the FFLO region in the different phase diagrams. We conclude by investigating the possibility of an FFLO state with a wave vector that lies skewed with respect to the direction along which the periodic potential varies. Our results provide an additional way to facilitate the experimental observation of the FFLO state in a 3D Fermi gas.
