Non-Markovian master equation for a damped oscillator with time-varying parameters

Abstract

We derive an exact non-Markovian master equation that generalizes the previous work [Hu, Paz and Zhang, Phys. Rev. D 45, 2843 (1992)] to damped harmonic oscillators with time-varying parameters. This is achieved by exploiting the linearity of the system and operator solution in Heisenberg picture. Our equation governs the non-Markovian quantum dynamics when the system is modulated by external devices. As an application, we apply our equation to parity kick decoupling problems. The time-dependent dissipative coefficients in the master equation are shown to be modified drastically when the system is driven by $\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses. For coherence protection to be effective, our numerical results indicate that kicking period should be shorter than memory time of the bath. The effects of using soft pulses in an ohmic bath are also discussed.

Exact time evolution and master equations for the damped harmonic oscillator

Robert Karrlein, Hermann Grabert

Using the exact path integral solution for the damped harmonic oscillator it is shown that in general there does not exist an exact dissipative Liouville operator describing the dynamics of the oscillator for arbitrary initial bath preparations. Exact nonstationary Liouville operators can be found only for particular preparations. Three physically meaningful examples are examined. An exact master equation is derived for thermal initial conditions. Second, the Liouville operator governing the time evolution of equilibrium correlations is obtained. Third, factorizing initial conditions are studied. Additionally, one can show that there are approximate Liouville operators independent of the initial preparation describing the long-time dynamics under appropriate conditions. The general form of these approximate master equations is derived and the coefficients are determined for special cases of the bath spectral density including the Ohmic, Drude, and weak coupling cases. The connection with earlier work is discussed.

Time-dependent Markovian quantum master equation

Roie Dann, Amikam Levy, Ronnie Kosloff

We construct a quantum Markovian master equation for a driven system coupled to a thermal bath. The derivation utilizes an explicit solution of the propagator of the driven system. This enables the validity of the master equation to be extended beyond the adiabatic limit. The nonadiabatic master equation (NAME) is derived employing the weak system-bath coupling limit. The NAME is valid when a separation of timescales exists between the bath dynamics and the external driving. In contrast to the adiabatic master equation, the NAME leads to coupled equations of motion for the population and coherence. We employ the NAME to solve the example of an open driven time-dependent harmonic oscillator. For the harmonic oscillator the NAME predicts the emergence of coherence associated with the dissipation term. As a result of the nonadiabatic driving the thermalization rate is suppressed. The solution is compared with both numerical calculations and the adiabatic master equation.

Going beyond quantum Markovianity and back to reality: An exact master equation study

Zhao-Ming Wang, Wu, S. L., Mark Byrd +1 more

The precise characterization of dynamics in open quantum systems often presents significant challenges, leading to the introduction of various approximations to simplify a model. One commonly used strategy involves Markovian approximations, assuming a memoryless environment. In this study, such approximations are not used and an analytical dynamical depiction of an open quantum system is provided. The system under consideration is an oscillator that is surrounded by a bath of oscillators. The resulting dynamics are characterized by a second-order complex coefficient linear differential equation, which may be either homogeneous or inhomogeneous. Moreover, distinct dynamical regions emerge, depending on certain parameter values. Notably, the steady-state average excitation number (AEN) of the system shows rapid escalation with increasing non-Markovianity, reflecting the intricacies of real-world dynamics. In cases where there is detuning between the system frequency and the environmental central frequency within a non-Markovian regime, the AEN maintains its initial value for an extended period. Furthermore, the application of pulse control can effectively protect the quantum system from decoherence effects without using approximations. The pulse control can not only prolong the relaxation time of the oscillator, but can also be used to speed up the relaxation process, depending on the specifications of the pulse. By employing a kick pulse, the Mpemba effect can be observed in the non-Markovian regime in a surprisingly super-cooling-like effect.

Solution of the post-Markovian master equation for a damping harmonic oscillator

X. L. Huang, Jing Nie, Jiao Chen +1 more

We solve the post-Markovian master equation for a damping harmonic oscillator by virtue of the damping basis approach. With our solution, we study some features for the harmonic oscillator in non-Markovian channel. The results show that the non-Markovian effect governed by the post-Markovian master equation keeps the semi-positivity and slows the energy decay to environment. Moreover, different from the Markovian process, at zero temperature, a coherent state under time evolution does not remain a coherent state.

Evolution of Gaussian mixed states under the Markovian master equation for a driven quantum oscillator

B. A. Tay

We study a generic quantum Markovian master equation for a linearly displaced or driven harmonic oscillator. It was known that the displacement dynamics of Gaussian mixed states depends on the unitary part of the Liouvillian, the decay rate of the system but not on the bath temperature. Here we further show that the fast-rotating modes do not affect the system's displacement dynamics under linear driving forces. Analytical solutions of the quantum master equation are obtained for displaced Gaussian mixed states. Because the non-driven and driven Liouvillians are related by a unitary displacement operator, they are expected to share the same exceptional points structure. At the exceptional points, the displacement of critically damped oscillator displays a characteristics polynomial-in-time prefactor multiplied by an exponential decay. We discuss how external time-dependent forces affect the displacement dynamics using impulsive force and harmonic force as examples. The results obtained for constant driving remain valid in the presence of time-dependent driving.

Momentum coupling in non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion

Luca Ferialdi, Andrea Smirne

We consider a model of non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion that consists of a harmonic oscillator bilinearly coupled to a thermal bath, both via its position and via its momentum operators. We derive the master equation for such a model, and we solve the equations of motion for a generic Gaussian system state. We then investigate the resulting evolution of the first and second moments for both an Ohmic and a super-Ohmic spectral density. In particular, we show that, irrespective of the specific form of the spectral density, the coupling with the momentum enhances the dissipation experienced by the system, accelerating its relaxation to the equilibrium as well as modifying the asymptotic state of the dynamics. Eventually, we characterize explicitly the non-Markovianity of the evolution using a general criterion which relies on the positivity of the master equation coefficients.
