Gaussian Quantum Discord

Abstract

We extend the quantum discord to continuous variable systems and evaluate Gaussian quantum discord C(ϱ) for bipartite Gaussian states. In particular, for squeezed-thermal states, we explicitly maximize the extractable information over Gaussian measurements: C(ϱ) is minimized by a generalized measurement rather than a projective one. Almost all squeezed-thermal states have nonzero Gaussian discord: They may be either separable or entangled if the discord is below the threshold C(ϱ) = 1, whereas they are all entangled above the threshold. We elucidate the general role of state parameters in determining the discord and discuss its evolution in noisy channels.

Quantum discord for Gaussian states with non-Gaussian measurements

Paolo Giorda, Michele Allegra, Matteo G. A. Paris

In recent years the paradigm based on entanglement as the unique measure of quantum correlations has been challenged by the rise of new correlation concepts, such as quantum discord, able to reveal quantum correlations that are present in separable states. It is in general difficult to compute quantum discord, because it involves a minimization over all possible local measurements in a bipartition. In the realm of continuous-variable (CV) systems, a Gaussian version of quantum discord has been put forward upon restricting to Gaussian measurements. It is natural to ask whether non-Gaussian measurements can lead to a stronger minimization than Gaussian ones. Here we focus on two relevant classes of two-mode Gaussian states: squeezed thermal states and mixed thermal states, and allow for a range of experimentally feasible non-Gaussian measurements, comparing the results with the case of Gaussian measurements. We provide evidence that Gaussian measurements are optimal for Gaussian states.

Entanglement and discord in two-mode Gaussian open quantum systems

Аурелиан Исар

In the framework of the theory of open systems, we give a description of quantum entanglement and quantum discord for two noninteracting modes embedded in a thermal environment. We describe the evolution of entanglement in terms of the covariance matrix for Gaussian input states. For all values of the temperature of the thermal reservoir, an initial separable squeezed thermal state remains separable for all times. In the case of an entangled initial squeezed thermal state, entanglement suppression (entanglement sudden death) takes place for nonzero temperatures of the environment. The Gaussian quantum discord, which is a measure of all quantum correlations in the state, including entanglement, decays asymptotically in time.

GAUSSIAN GEOMETRIC DISCORD

Gerardo Adesso, Davide Girolami

We extend the geometric measure of quantum discord, introduced and computed for two-qubit states, to quantify non-classical correlations in composite Gaussian states of continuous variable systems. We lay the formalism for the evaluation of a Gaussian geometric discord in two-mode Gaussian states, and present explicit formulas for the class of two-mode squeezed thermal states. In such a case, under physical constraints of bounded mean energy, geometric discord is shown to admit upper and lower bounds for a fixed value of the conventional (entropic) quantum discord. We finally discuss alternative geometric approaches to quantify Gaussian quadrature correlations.

Quantum Entanglement and Quantum Discord of Two-Mode Gaussian States in a Thermal Environment

Аурелиан Исар

In the framework of the theory of open systems based on completely positive quantum dynamical semigroups, we give a description of the continuous-variable quantum entanglement and quantum discord for a system consisting of two noninteracting modes embedded in a thermal environment. Entanglement and discord are used to quantify the quantum correlations of the system. For all values of the temperature of the thermal reservoir, an initially separable Gaussian state remains separable for all times. We study the time evolution of logarithmic negativity, which characterizes the degree of entanglement, and we show that in the case of an entangled initial Gaussian state, entanglement suppression (entanglement sudden death) takes place for non-zero temperatures of the environment. Only for zero temperature of the thermal bath the initial entangled state remains entangled for finite times. We analyze time evolution of Gaussian quantum discord, which is a measure of all quantum correlations in the bipartite state, including entanglement, and we show that quantum discord decays asymptotically in time under the effect of thermal bath. This is in contrast with the sudden death of entanglement. Before the suppression of entanglement, the qualitative evolution of quantum discord is very similar to that of the entanglement. We describe also time evolution of the degree of classical correlations and of quantum mutual information, which measures the total correlations of quantum system.

Non-Markovian Dynamic of Gaussian Quantum Discord in Continuous-Variable Systems

We show the special dynamic characteristic of Gaussian quantum discord, exhibited by two-mode Gaussian symmetric squeezed thermal states (STS) in continuous-variable (CV) systems with a common non-Markovian environment, is denitely dierent from Markov processes. We demonstrate that Gaussian quantum discord can be created whenever the information ow from environment back to the system. We also show that the rate of decrease for Gaussian quantum discord is related to the coupling constant. We discover that the initial value of Gaussian quantum discord is determined by the average number of thermal photons of the system.
