Abstract

We observed an enhanced atom-dimer loss due to the existence of Efimov states in a three-component mixture of 6Li atoms. We measured the magnetic-field dependence of the atom-dimer loss in the mixture of atoms in state |1> and dimers formed in states |2> and |3>, and found two peaks corresponding to the degeneracy points of the energy levels of |23> dimers and the ground and first excited Efimov trimers. We found that the locations of these peaks disagree with universal theory predictions, in a way that cannot be explained by nonuniversal two-body properties. We constructed theoretical models that characterize the nonuniversal three-body physics of three-component 6Li atoms in the low-energy domain.

Efimov physics in Li6 atoms

A new narrow three-atom loss resonance associated with an Efimov trimer crossing the three-atom threshold has recently been discovered in a many-body system of ultracold $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms in the three lowest hyperfine spin states at a magnetic field near 895 G. O'Hara and coworkers have used measurements of the three-body recombination rate in this region to determine the complex three-body parameter associated with Efimov physics. Using this parameter as the input, we calculate the universal predictions for the spectrum of Efimov states and for the three-body recombination rate in the universal region above 600 G where all three scattering lengths are large. We predict an atom-dimer loss resonance at $672\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$ G associated with an Efimov trimer disappearing through an atom-dimer threshold. We also predict an interference minimum in the three-body recombination rate at $759\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ G where the three-spin mixture may be sufficiently stable to allow experimental study of the many-body system.

Possible Efimov Trimer State in a Three-Hyperfine-Component Lithium-6 Mixture

Pascal Naidon, Masahito Ueda

We consider the Efimov trimer theory as a possible framework to explain recently observed losses by inelastic three-body collisions in a three-hyperfine-component ultracold mixture of lithium 6. Within this framework, these losses would arise chiefly from the existence of an Efimov trimer bound state below the continuum of free triplets of atoms, and the loss maxima (at certain values of an applied magnetic field) would correspond to zero-energy resonances where the trimer dissociates into three free atoms. Our results show that such a trimer state is indeed possible given the two-body scattering lengths in the three-component lithium mixture and gives rise to two zero-energy resonances. The locations of these resonances appear to be consistent with observed losses.

Atom-Dimer Scattering in a Three-Component Fermi Gas

Thomas Lompe, T. B. Ottenstein, Friedhelm Serwane +4 more

Ultracold gases of three distinguishable particles with large scattering lengths are expected to show rich few-body physics related to the Efimov effect. We have created three different mixtures of ultracold 6Li atoms and weakly bound 6Li2 dimers consisting of atoms in three different hyperfine states and studied their inelastic decay via atom-dimer collisions. We have found resonant enhancement of the decay due to the crossing of Efimov-like trimer states with the atom-dimer continuum in one mixture as well as minima of the decay in another mixture, which we interpret as a suppression of exchange reactions of the type |12+|3→|23+|1. Such a suppression is caused by interference between different decay paths and demonstrates the possibility of using Efimov physics to control the rate constants for molecular exchange reactions in the ultracold regime.

Measurement of an Efimov Trimer Binding Energy in a Three-Component Mixture of Li6

Shuta Nakajima, Munekazu Horikoshi, Takashi Mukaiyama +2 more

The binding energy of an Efimov trimer state was precisely determined via radio-frequency association. It is found that the measurement results shift significantly with temperature, but that the shift becomes negligible at the lowest temperature in our experiment. The shift-free part of the trimer binding energy reveals a significant deviation from the nonuniversal theory prediction based on a three-body parameter with a monotonic binding-energy dependence.

Efimov Physics in a three-component Fermi gas

Thomas Lompe

This thesis reports on experiments studying the few-body physics of three distinguishable fermionic atoms with large scattering lengths. The experiments were performed with ultracold gases of fermionic 6Li atoms in three different hyperfine states. By tuning the strength of the interactions between the atoms with Feshbach resonances and measuring the rate constants for inelastic three-atom and atom-dimer collisions the intersections of two universal trimer states with the three-atom and atom-dimer continuum could be located. Subsequently, one of these Efimov states was directly observed with RF-association spectroscopy. Using this technique the binding energy of this Efimov state was measured as a function of the strength of the interparticle interactions. The experiments presented in this thesis provide a nearly complete understanding of the universal few-body physics of three-component Fermi gases of 6Li atoms. This understanding will be the foundation for future studies of the many-body physics of three-component Fermi gases.

Evidence for an Excited-State Efimov Trimer in a Three-Component Fermi Gas

Jason Williams, E.L. Hazlett, J. H. Huckans +3 more

We observe enhanced three-body recombination in a three-component ;{6}Li Fermi gas attributable to an excited Efimov trimer state intersecting the three-atom scattering threshold near 895 G. From measurements of the recombination rate we determine the Efimov parameters kappa_{*} and eta_{*} for the universal region above 600 G which includes three overlapping Feshbach resonances. The value of kappa_{*} also predicts the locations of loss features previously observed near 130 and 500 G [T. B. Ottenstein, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 203202 (2008)10.1103/PhysRevLett.101.203202; J. H. Huckans, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 165302 (2009)10.1103/PhysRevLett.102.165302] suggesting they are associated with a ground-state Efimov trimer near threshold. We also report on the realization of a degenerate three-component Fermi gas with approximate SU(3) symmetry.
