Abstract

We derive a generalized time-dependent Galilean-invariant density-functional (DF) equation appropriate to study the stationary and non-stationary properties of a trapped Fermi super-fluid in the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. This equation is equivalent to a quantum hydrodynamical equation for a Fermi super-fluid. The bulk chemical potential of this equation has the proper (model-independent) dependence on the Fermi–Fermi scattering length in the BCS and BEC limits. We apply this DF equation to the study of the stationary density profile and size of a cigar-shaped Fermi super-fluid of 6 Li atoms, and the results are in good agreement with the experiment of Bartenstein et al in the BCS–BEC crossover. We also apply the DF equation to the study of axial and radial breathing oscillation and our results for these frequencies are in good agreement with experiments in the BCS–BEC crossover.

Mean-field equations for cigar- and disc-shaped Bose and Fermi superfluids

Camilo A. G. Buitrago, Sadhan K. Adhikari

Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) time-dependent nonlinear Gross–Pitaevskii equation for a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) and the density-functional (DF) equation for a Fermi superfluid at the unitarity and Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) limits, we derive effective one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) mean-field equations, respectively, for the dynamics of a trapped cigar- and disc-shaped BEC and Fermi superfluid by using the adiabatic approximation. The reduced 1D and 2D equations for a cigar- and disc-shaped Fermi superfluid have simple analytic non-linear terms and at unitarity produce results for stationary properties and non-stationary breathing oscillation and free expansion in excellent agreement with the solution of the full 3D equation.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where ${k}_{F}|a|⪡1$ with $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit ${k}_{F}a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where ${k}_{F}a>0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Super Efimovian expansions of superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS–BEC crossover

Liang Zhang, Wen Wen, Xiaodong Ma +1 more

We study the super Efimovian expansions of a superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), by using superfluid hydrodynamic equations with the equation of state fitting from the experimental data and a scaling approach. We find that in an isotropic trap, the super Efimovian expansion of the Fermi superfluid in the unitary limit is characterized by the double-log periodicity, while for an axially symmetric trap, the double-log periodicity only emerges in the longer direction for a large anisotropy of the trapping frequencies. Away from unitarity where the scale invariance is broken, the super Efimovian expansions of the superfluid Fermi gases deviate from the double-log oscillations. The oscillations in the BCS regime deviate upward from the double-log oscillations, whereas the oscillations in the BEC regime deviate downward and the deviation in the BEC limit is the most significant. This difference can be used to discriminate different superfluid regimes.

BCS-BEC crossover of atomic Fermi superfluid in a spherical bubble trap

Yan He, Hao Guo, Chih-Chun Chien

We present a theory of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with tunable attractive contact interactions on a spherical shell going through the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, inspired by the realizations of spherical bubble traps for ultracold atoms in microgravity. The derivation follows the BCS-Leggett theory to obtain the gap and number equations. The BCS-BEC crossover can be induced by tuning the interaction, and the properly normalized gap and chemical potential exhibit universal behavior regardless of the planar or spherical geometry. Nevertheless, the spherical-shell geometry introduces another way of inducing the crossover by the curvature. The curvature-induced BCS-BEC crossover is made possible by fixing the particle number and interaction strength while shrinking the sphere, causing a reduction to the ratio of the pairing and kinetic energies and pushing the system toward the BCS limit. The saturation of the superfluid density further confirms that the ground state is a Fermi superfluid.

Collective oscillation modes of a superfluid Bose–Fermi mixture

Wen Wen, Ying Wang, Jianyong Wang

Abstract In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures are found to crucially depend on the overlap integrals of the spatial derivations of density profiles of the Bose and Fermi superfluids at equilibrium. We not only present the explicit expressions for the overlap density integrals, as well as the frequencies of the collective modes provided that the effective Bose–Fermi coupling is weak, but also test the valid regimes of the analytical approximations by numerical calculations in realistic experimental conditions. In the presence of a repulsive Bose–Fermi interaction, we find that the frequencies of the three collective modes of the Bose and Fermi superfluids are all upshifted, and the change speeds of the frequency shifts in the BCS–BEC crossover can characterize the different groundstate phases of the Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures for different trap geometries.
