Abstract

We study the Mott-insulator–superfluid transition of ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field with p / q ( p and q being co-prime integers) flux quanta passing through each lattice plaquette. We show that on approach to the transition from the Mott side, the momentum distribution of the bosons exhibits q precursor peaks within the first magnetic Brillouin zone. We also provide an effective theory for the transition and show that it involves q interacting boson fields. We construct, from a mean-field analysis of this effective theory, the superfluid ground states near the transition and compute, for q =2, 3, both the gapped and the gapless collective modes of these states. We suggest experiments to test our theory.

Ultracold bosons in a synthetic periodic magnetic field: Mott phases and reentrant superfluid-insulator transitions

Kush Saha, K. Sengupta, Koushik Ray

We study Mott phases and superfluid-insulator (SI) transitions of ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice at commensurate filling and in the presence of a synthetic periodic vector potential characterized by a strength $p$ and a period $l=qa$, where $q$ is an integer and $a$ is the lattice spacing. We show that the Schr\"odinger equation for the noninteracting bosons in the presence of such a periodic vector potential can be reduced to an one-dimensional Harper-like equation which yields $q$ energy bands. The lowest of these bands have either single or double minima whose position within the magnetic Brillouin zone can be tuned by varying $p$ for a given $q$. Using these energies and a strong-coupling expansion technique, we compute the phase diagram of these bosons in the presence of a deep optical lattice. We chart out the $p$ and $q$ dependence of the momentum distribution of the bosons in the Mott phases near the SI transitions and demonstrate that the bosons exhibit several reentrant field-induced SI transitions for any fixed period $q$. We also predict that the superfluid density of the resultant superfluid state near such a SI transition has a periodicity $q$ $(q/2)$ in real space for odd (even) $q$ and suggest experiments to test our theory.

Quantum phase transition of ultracold bosons in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field

Tobias Graß, Kush Saha, K. Sengupta +1 more

We study the Mott phases and the superfluid-insulator transition of two-component ultracold bosons on a square optical lattice in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field, which renders a SU(2)-hopping matrix for the bosons. Using a resummed hopping expansion, we calculate the excitation spectra in the Mott insulating phases and demonstrate that the superfluid-insulator phase boundary displays a nonmonotonic dependence on the gauge-field strength. We also compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the presence of the non-Abelian field and show that they develop peaks at nonzero momenta as the superfluid-insulator transition point is approached from the Mott side. Finally, we study the superfluid phases near the transition and discuss the induced spatial pattern of the superfluid density due to the presence of the non-Abelian gauge potential.

Coherence of interacting bosons in optical lattices in synthetic magnetic fields with a large number of subbands

B. Grygiel, K. Patucha, T. A. Zaleski

We study the behavior of interacting ultracold bosons in optical lattices in synthetic magnetic fields with wide range of in-cell fluxes $\ensuremath{\alpha}=p/q$. The problem is similar to the one of an electron moving in a tight-binding scheme in the magnetic field and becomes difficult to tackle for a growing number of magnetic subbands, $q$. To overcome this, we focus on the interplay of the width, shape, and number of the subbands on the formation of the coherent state of cold bosons. Using the quantum rotor approach, which goes beyond the mean-field approximation, we are able to pinpoint the elements of the band structure, which are the most significant in a proper theoretical description of the synthetic magnetic field in a bosonic lattice system. As a result, we propose a method of reconstruction of the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum by replacing the magnetic subbands with renormalized bands of a square lattice. This allows us to effectively investigate the properties of the studied system for a wide range of magnetic fluxes and their impact on the Mott-insulator--superfluid transition.

Superfluid-Mott-Insulator Phase Transition of Bosons in an Optical Lattice

Zhu Rui

The Bose–Hubbard model describing interacting bosons in an optical lattice is reduced to a simple spin-1 XY model with single-ion anisotropy in the vicinity of the Mott phase. We propose a mean-field theory based on a constraint SU(3) pseudo-boson representation on the effective model to study the properties of the superfluid-Mott-insulator phase transition. By calculating the elementary excitation spectra and the average particle number fluctuation in the Brillouin zone center, we find that the energy gaps vanish continuously around ( J XY / J z ) c ≈0.175 and ( J XY / J z ) c ≈0.094 for 2D and 3D cubic lattices respectively, where the superfluid order parameters come up from zero and the Mott insulator state changes into a superfluid state.

Mott insulator to superfluid transition of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice near a Feshbach resonance

K. Sengupta, N. Dupuis

We study the phase diagram of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice near a Feshbach resonance. Depending on the boson density, the strength of the optical-lattice potential and the detuning from resonance, the ground state can be a Mott insulator, a superfluid phase with both an atomic and a molecular condensate, or a superfluid phase with only a molecular condensate. Mott insulator to superfluid transitions can be induced either by decreasing the strength of the optical-lattice potential or by varying the detuning from the Feshbach resonance. Quite generally, we find that for a commensurate density the ground state may undergo several insulator-superfluid or superfluid-insulator transitions as the magnetic field is varied through the resonance.

Superfluid–Mott-insulator transition of spin-2 cold bosons in an optical lattice in a magnetic field

Shuo Jin, Jing-Min Hou, Bing-Hao Xie +2 more

The superfluid--Mott-insulator transition of spin-2 boson atoms with repulsive interaction in an optical lattice in a magnetic field is presented. By using the mean-field theory, the Mott ground states and phase diagrams of the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition at zero temperature are revealed. An applied magnetic field leads to splitting of some phase boundaries. For all the initial Mott ground states containing multiple spin components, different spin components take on different phase boundaries. It is found that in this system phase boundaries with different magnetization can be moved in different ways by changing only the intensity of the applied magnetic field.
