Hadamard matrices from mutually unbiased bases

Abstract

An analytical method for getting new complex Hadamard matrices by using mutually unbiased bases and a nonlinear doubling formula is provided. The method is illustrated with the n=4 case that leads to a rich family of eight-dimensional Hadamard matrices that depend on five arbitrary parameters whose modulus is equal to unity.

A new method to construct families of complex Hadamard matrices in even dimensions

Dardo Goyeneche

We present a new method for constructing affine families of complex Hadamard matrices in every even dimension. This method has an intersection with Diţă’s construction and generalizes Szöllősi's method. We extend some known families and present new ones existing in even dimensions. In particular, we find more than 13 millon inequivalent affine families in dimension 32. We also find analytical restrictions for any set of four mutually unbiased bases existing in dimension six and for any family of complex Hadamard matrices existing in every odd dimension.

All Mutually Unbiased Bases in Dimensions Two to Five

STEPHEN D. BRIERLEY, Stefan Weigert, Ingemar Bengtsson

All complex Hadamard matrices in dimensions two to five are known. We use this fact to derive all inequivalent sets of mutually unbiased (MU) bases in low dimensions. We find a three-parameter family of triples of MU bases in dimension four and two inequivalent classes of MU triples in dimension five. We confirm that the complete sets of (d+1) MU bases are unique (up to equivalence) in dimensions below six, using only elementary arguments for d less than five.

Isolated Hadamard matrices from mutually unbiased product bases

Daniel McNulty, Stefan Weigert

A new construction of complex Hadamard matrices of composite order d = pq, with primes p, q, is presented which is based on pairs of mutually unbiased bases containing only product states. For product dimensions d < 100, we illustrate the method by deriving many previously unknown complex Hadamard matrices. We obtain at least 12 new isolated matrices of Butson type, with orders ranging from 9 to 91.

Explicit constructions of mutually unbiased bases via Hadamard matrices

Jean-Christophe Pain

We present a detailed computational and algebraic study of Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, with a particular focus on dimensions 2, 3, 4, and the challenging case of 6. Starting from the Hadamard-phase parametrization, we derive explicit analytical conditions for mutual unbiasedness in dimension 4, providing a tractable system of trigonometric constraints on the phase parameters. We then explore a tensor-product construction via Pauli operators, highlighting the algebraic and group-theoretical origin of MUBs in two-qubit systems, and demonstrating how these constructions yield a complete set of 5 MUBs in dimension 4. Extending our approach, we investigate the Fourier-family method in dimension 6, where the absence of a prime-power structure imposes strong rigidity constraints and limits the known constructions to sets of 3 MUBs. We provide a systematic computational framework for testing candidate phase vectors, bridging the gap between analytical insight and numerical exploration. Finally, we generalize the discussion to arbitrary prime-power dimensions, emphasizing the role of finite-field structures, Heisenberg-Weyl operators, and discrete symmetries in generating complete sets of MUBs. Our work offers a transparent, line-by-line verification methodology, highlighting both the geometric and algebraic richness of MUBs, and clarifying why certain dimensions resist full analytical constructions. This study serves as a comprehensive resource for researchers seeking both theoretical understanding and practical construction of MUBs in quantum information science.
